If you're going to do that. just make a movie about aliens.
There's going to be some contrived way of tying it in with the game bitch moan gripe and so on.........

Mouse Trap- now there's a story worth telling.

I think it sounds cool, even if it is based on a board game - a sort of Top Gun against Aliens if you will... on the seas.

Anyway, Taylor Kitsch has been confirmed as the lead.

*Potential spoilers*

Not really, I think the conceit of the film makes sense. If one considers the prospect and indeed plausibility of a navy belonging to a country which is not an ally of the United States, one such as Russia or China being pitted against the U.S. navy in a credible context. It isn't so believeable if one wants a 'real-world' setting. Where no real threat exists in reality, a fictional one should be created. That way you can get away with anything without people nitpicking about the actual technical accuracy and realism of conventional ship-to-ship combat. The premise involves the aliens (dubbed "The Regent") using surface vessels which manoeuvre and traverse across the water akin to how common water-based insects do. They employ a system similar to hydrofoil technology. Their technology isn't far beyond ours when it comes to weapons technology at least, they use similar projectile-based weapons as we do. I think they employ some sort of advanced radar and/or electronic countermeasure technology which renders our most advanced and sophisticated 'detection' and communication systems inoperable. The protagonist force consists of a five-ship flotilla with a battleship (possibly the U.S.S. Missouri or other ship). The jamming technology of the aliens is a plot device which provides a more close-quarters affair. In an interview with the director Peter Berg, he said that he had visited a naval ship and looked at their targetting systems among other things. He noted they used a grid-map which listed enemy contacts (known as "tracks") and its layout was similar to the "Battleship" board game. Berg is going for a World War II atmosphere as I imagine there'll be tense and perhaps claustrophobic scenes aboard the ships as typified by many WWII films set aboard naval vessels. Apparently the "you (they) sunk my battleship!" line of dialogue will be included in the film!

I think the conceit of the film is imaginative and takes a rather prosaic tactical engagement from the board game and evolves the idea to become much more entertaining. I'm very much looking forward to this film. I quite like a story where the military takes on a fantastical opponent.

"You sunk my battleship!"

Also, Alexander Skarsgard of Generation Kill is staring! With this, Battle: Los Angeles, MOnsters and Super 8 - now is the time for alien invasion movies.

The singer cum actress Rhianna will have a role in the film. I hope it doesn't cheapen the production. I can't help think they'll use her to make the soundtrack.

$200 million? These better be some epic battles.

Calm down dear. Just as any film where two lovers meet a miserable end should be dubbed "Romeo & Juliet - the Motion Picture", right? Who cares where they got the name from; whether it's a boardgame involving tactical placing of pegs or bloody thumb war. No-one's going to care when the film's out, as long as it's entertaining and has an interesting premise then I'm all for it. As I said above; visually, there is a loose connection between the tactical plotting found in the boardgame and the actual tactical manoeuvering one will find in modern naval combat (1). If used right, it can be used to add some good bit of tension in the film as I suspect it will be a game of cat and mouse between us and the aliens. Of course there's going to be merchandise and I'm sure they'll release a new edition of the boardgame with the Regent aliens in it. When "The Dark Knight" came out, they marketed the hell out of it including making nice plastic little toys for the kinder to play with. Yet many people enjoyed the film. You can't escape it and frankly it's not going to impact on anyone's experience of watching the film: good or bad.

1. Plotting an enemy's position on a grid map whilst sailing blind and trying to destroy them.

This film looks ridiculous although it has the potential to be hilarious I guess. I love the little things in the trailer that match-up to the game like the missiles looking like the pegs and the outward zoom to a birds-eye view. What next, a small ship that can be taken out with a single missile but is damn hard to find?

They use PEGS as weapons.

This movie is going to be amazing.

Very interesting article about the focus and direction of the film and what will be in the new trailer.

Thanks for sharing that Timon.

I can't wait for this film. I don't care what anyone says but I loved Battle: Los Angeles. I never tire of any alien invasion/monster attack film where the world's finest takes them on. I do hope there'll be a bit more to the film as the article suggests.

"there's always inherent cynicism particularly amongst us, the cinema intelligentsia, but you go onto your average... and I get. It's totally reasonable, but you go to your average high school football game outside of Philadelphia and say, 'Yeah, I'm doing this film called "Battleship."' 'Oh, the game? That's cool. I love that game.'"

Oh Peter Berg - I thought you were better than that.

It is the Michael Bay defense - "We didn't make this movie for film fans - it is your own fault if you think a live action Battleship movie is the silliest idea yet produced by Hollywood"

The man made a Battleship movie - embrace that and don't try and act like you are fighting againt "the cinema intelligentsia".

New trailer.

If you said this was a Transformers 4 trailer I would not disbelieve you.

'From the company that brought you Transformers' Surely a new low in marketing tag lines...

This looks pretty woeful but there were a couple of nice things in there. That shot of the sailors in the sucky iny outy blast thing was really cool. And the alien (or whatever it is) looks like Master Chief from Halo. And the tropical location shots made me think of Crysis. Other than that though...

I've never really rated Berg at all and on the evidence of this that won't be changing any time soon.

Credit where it's due though, the FX work looks highly impressive. But what else is new these days I suppose.

Give someone this amount of cash to make a huge Napoleonic War epic out of Risk if you want to use board games as a jumping off point. That would be cool as we've basically seen this movie many times already thanks to Michael Bay.

It isn't a bad trailer is it? I mean, FX looks good, looks much bigger scale than a 'Battleship' movie has any right to, Liam Neeson (clearly carking it mid way through) is always worth watching and I'm sure it'll be a diverting couple of hours. But what the fuck is with Rhianna's accent? Is that her real accent?

How is quoting a Billion Dollar franchise a new low in marketing? It's just the opposite IMO.

What, a new high

Let's define our terms here. It will probably work, so I'm not saying it's bad marketing as for the reason you point out it's probably good marketing. But good marketing and low marketing often go hand in hand

It's cheap and desperate sounding. Like when they try and sell movies by listing 'From the Writers of Saw' or something like that. This is shameful marketing because it doesn't even link it to anything cinematic, it's merely the same company that made the toys. Just further adding to the obvious shallow nature of the film. 'From the Director of' or even 'From Executive Producer blah blah' is OK... but a toy manufacturing company no, just sounds like a pathetic cash grab to me.

But to each there own I suppose.

The same company that brought audiences the Transformers MOVIES too! How is that not linking it to anything cinematic?
