Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "That is karma for what happened to us in South Africa..."

Yes Rio, Karma decides to punish Ukraine for Germany wrongly having a goal allowed. Fucking cock.

Does that mean that if Ukraine play Russia they'll be given 2 goals headstart by the football karma gods?

Sir Woy?

Someone needs to confiscate the bugle and ram it down Tyldsely's throat.

I'm trying to work out still if the team's performance or the commentary is the most embarassing thing about the game. Might need to go to penalties to decide this one.

Tournament fooball, huh. Russia, Holland and Croatia all go home. England can top their group and didn't even play one of the most expensive players in the PL yet.

And Ireland! go figure

Parker's gonna look like Rocky Balboa after 12 rounds with Apollo come the end of this tournament.

Good run out for Rooney but he's got to improve.

Ukraine have been really unlucky not to win and go through tonight.

Playing like shit, getting results, topped the group and avoided Spain. Imagine what it'd be like if we were actually good?

Jesus!

I'm checking the odds on England tomorrow. It feels like watching Chelsea in the Champions League. Totally lacked any attacking ambition. Off the line, good saves. Missed chances. How can we NOT win the whole tournament!?

Aye. I like a good moan and the football might not be free flowing but I'm loving watching an England team looking like they are enjoying the occasion and fighting for each other unlike the shit we saw in South Africa.

Classic away performance! The group stage turned out to be a bit of a cakewalk in the end.

How much did Rooney's hair cost him? He looks like Frankie Howard.

Do the players really think they played well?

How much can be explained away with "its a new team?". I think there is a degree of an excuse of a work in progress but surely keeping the ball shouldn't be as hard as we are making it. 2nd half we were better, thanks to them having to push on and it creating space, but it really is a worry.

Ah fuck it, I'm off to play FIFA where England can retain the ball for more than 2 passes.

Amused really.

Isn't this about the time that the FA sack Hodgson for playing crap fitba and appoint DiMatteo as caretaker?

The more half-witted amongst the media now seem to reckon England have a proper chance now. Which is funny.

Is it wrong of me to support England and Italy in the match? I suppose so, it's fence sitting, but it's a comfortable fence. My old man has already called me to say he expects me at his on the night in an Italy shirt. Damn him!

So, we'll play expansive brilliant football against the Italians and get knocked out it is then!

England have been shite, and really not much better than 2010. The only difference seems to be we are getting better results somehow and we came back against Sweden. There does seem a better spirit amongst the team and we are far more disciplined. I doubt we'd see us going gung-ho against a team like we did when 2-1 down to Germany.

But we desperately need to keep the ball more. It's not only knackering chasing the ball, but better attacks than Sweden's and Ukraine's will properly punish us.

Welbeck, Young, Parker and Milner were all crap again. Rooney was rusty but fair enough and I thought Cole wasn't hs usual standard. I really don't know how the extra official didn't see that was over the line, although that doesn't matter really as he was offside in the build up anyway.

Looking forward to the Italy game and now anything we get is a bonus. I'm more worried about Italy's strikers than I was Benzema. Benzema was on his own up top but Italy can use Balotelli's muscle (if he's having a good day) with the intelligence of Di Natale or Cassano. All the while our back 4 and Gerrard and Parker will sit back and watch Pirlo, who is a better orchestrator than any of the France midfield, move the ball about and build attack after attack.

I disagree - he's been ineffective again tonight for me. Carroll and Rooney should lead the line against Italy.

I fully expect us to lose against Italy but even getting out of the group was always going to be hard given the circumstances. The teams we've beaten in the group are all decent teams. Our achievements so far are to be commended even if the performances have been unconvincing. I'm a happy England fan that's fallen in love with watching them again after the shocking World Cup 2 years ago. It's not good football, not at all, but it rarely is. It's just good to see them looking like a team with some unity and showing some grit and determination.

Not enough mentions of ZLATAN in this here thread. If a better goal is scored at this tournament, I'll eat my trumpet upon which I play 'Rule Britannia' on an endless loop.

Also, England are either (a) screwed or (b) it has already been written in the stars that they have won this tournament despite playing Ashley Young and James Milner in every game. Dunph's grin when asked about their chances can only be described as 'shark-like'

I'm always giving ZLATAN the love, what a man he is.

Looking forward to Sunday now, Chiellini is out and Italy start struggling after an hour or so, their fitness levels are'nt the best so if we can stay organised and attack with more quality we will give ourselves a bloody good shot at getting a result. Whatever happens the team has surpassed expectation so it will give us lots to build on.
