Likeable tarantino scripted, Tony Scott (Top Gun) comedy-thriller with super performances from Slater and Arquette. With its catchy theme tune and Arqutte's sweet voice over, it owes much to Terrence Maliks 1973 film, Badlands. Although, our heroes' actions are morally wrong, Scott focuses on their innocence and romance, giving Tarantino's quirky script which references Elvis and peaches a lot, a centre stage. Not as violent as Resevoir Dogs (except for the bathroom scene) or as pretentious as Pulp Fiction this is meant to be fun- more 'Til dusk till Dawn, but it's dodgy in parts. You can see why Spike Lee had a problem with Tarantino's casual use of the word Nigger in Denis Hopper and Cristopher Walkens scene stealer. And this is a film that features a white pimp that thinks he's Jamaican, "Is it white boy day?" says Dexl when Slater has a go, and Brad Pitt is wasted in more ways than one as a stoned- out bum. However it simmers gently, introducing an all star- line up one by one and there are genuine comedy moments as things go wrong with the drug deal. The climax is perfect too, making it a sort of cult classic.
