More than likely any expansion of the Watchmen universe will produce embarrassingly "dark" and "serious" (but sympathetically earnest) stories and portrayals of the characters of Moore and Gibbon's work. Undoubtedly one of the reasons that it has maintained such a classic and acclaimed status is that its characters and world has remained untouched by any outside force until Zack Snyder "screwed up" (note: he didn't screw up Watchmen, he overcooked the *film version* of Watchmen). However I must admit that when watching the film in the cinema I strongly desired to see Rorschach in action outside of the plot of Watchmen - but only in movies, as played by Jackie Earle Haley. Then again, a comics expansion of Watchmen could work: it would be quite easy to create a consistent canon, adhering to Moore's story; but equally DC could let it get out of hand and have a mess comparable to everything else in their universe. And Watchmen must remain OUTSIDE the multiverse/justice league rubbish - NO crossovers, thank you very much. The main problem would be redundancy: Moore's characters purely and primarily serve his deconstructive analysis of the superhero. Watchmen doesn't fulfill its potential or aim as a story without bearing this important purpose in mind while reading. So having an expanded Watchmen universe would either be inherently pointless in itself, or force the original story to become largely redundant. I'd rather not have an endless, chronologically and structurally simple soap opera of melancholy and pessimism populated by characters whose fates are almost all known from the get-go. If Watchmen is expanded, then in a couple of generations, young comic fans would approach the Watchmen universe and think "WTF? What's all the fuss about?". Unless DC were to maintain their respect of the original and Watchmen approached first and foremost by every new reader before moving onto the sequels/prequels, etc. But best not to risk it.
