Great to see Jeremy Renner in there for Hurt Locker... electrifying performance. District 9 up for Best Picture?? Don't make me laugh... Good film - best 10 films of the year? No way...

What a dreary old list - the ten film thing just goes to underline the poor quality of films in 2009 overall.

Film - Avatar; Director - Bigelow; Actor - Bridges; Actress - Bullock; Supporting - Waltz & Mo'nique; Screenplay - Up in the Air & Inglorious Basterds; Animated - Up (but I'm rooting for Coraline)

Probably will be completely wrong!

Pixar finallly break the 'animated picture' shackles! That's awesome - shame Up probably wouldn't be included if there weren't 10 nominations though...

Hang on...Why do I even care about this?

What's all the love for Inglorious Basterds? Waltz fully deserves a nom but the film is a film about films and hardly one of QT's best. I
Cameron wil sweep it I think. Up will win a few and Streep and Bridges could be in with a chance.

If there is any justice in the world, In The Loop will win screenplay.

Judged purely on the grounds of it's filmic worth, Precious stank to high heaven; if it wasn't for Barack Obama & the Welfare Bill it would have gone straight to DVD.

& Star Trek easily deserved a place in the top 10.

& Avatar doesn't deserve to sweep the board, for it does not have a human heatbeat.

& while there's no chance whatever, I've got fingers crossed for Chris Plummer, who's been working at the celuloid coal face for over 50 years.....................

It's a travesty that neither Moon nor Sam Rockwell made the cut.

And it's nominated by people who work in films and likes films.

Just a shame Sam Rockwell missed out for Moon.

Too bad Zoe Saldana didn't make the cut for one of the best performances and nobody ever saw her (real) face!

I mean, really, does Meryl need another Best Actress nomination? Could Zoe Saldana not have taken that fifth spot?

Overall, I think this is about right, and I'm pleased to see at least four nominations for District 9 (chances of taking a prize home, though? Zilch.) But I'm very disappointed that Moon appears to have received no recognition at all, and where is the nom for Let The Right One In? Anyone seen a better non-English movie in the last 12 months? Well, have ya!?!

I am so so happy that The Hurt Locker got some love and some serious love at that. I am now hoping that Kathryn will stick it to them all because, quite simply, nothing comes close to the power that film had. Also, I am hoping that Up gets best film...:)

Why is In the Loop adapted screenplay? Is it based on The Thick of It or something?

Seriously, Streep again? She could have been one of the 2 girls and 1 cup and got nominated. Would have been nice to see an acting nod for Sharlto Copley and a screenplay nod for Star Trek. And, while I want Mo'nique to win, it makes me chuckle to think of Anna Kendrick turning up to the Twilight set with her Oscar, Stewart, Patinson and Lautners eyes firing daggers at her

From Wikipedia...

Despite being an internationally successful film, Let the Right One In was not submitted by Sweden for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The details surrounding the film's eligibility for the award resulted in some confusion.[62] Being released on 24 October 2008, the film would normally be eligible for submission for the 82nd Academy Awards. However, the producers decided to release it on 24 September as a seven day limited run only in LuleŚ. This would be exactly enough to meet the criteria for the 81st Academy Awards instead.[62] When the Swedish Film Institute on 16 September announced that Jan Troell's Everlasting Moments had been selected instead of Let the Right One In, the LuleŚ screenings were cancelled. Despite the fact that the film was released within the eligibility period for the 82nd Academy Awards, it wasn't among the films considered because the Swedish Film Institute doesn't allow a film to be considered twice.[62]

Just goes to show, none of these awards are based on merit alone - a huge PR campaign by the studios is required in order to submit and woo the judges... they don't just all sit down and go 'I saw Let The Right On In; awesome wasn't it?"

Some musings...
  • Nothing for Where The Wild Things Are (Adapted Screenplay? Score? Visual Effects?)
  • They were never going to but... Anti-christ? (Not that the judges would allow it within 50 yards of the nominations but - incredible, innovative cinematography? Score?)
  • I'm sure all Helen Mirren has to do is show up in a film... she should get some cardboard cutouts done, spread her bets a bit more...
  • District 9 in the best film category - it's a good film, but not a great one. Same with Moon, although Sam Rockwell deserved a nod.
  • Star Trek wasn't that great...
  • Why do I even care?! It's meaningless...

Up in the air? and George Clooney? I know I'm in the minority but it really wasn't good enough to get noms like that. Clooney basically played himself which means that theoretically he should just get nominated every year for whatever film he is in. I'd be disappointed if it cleaned up. Nice to see some newbies in there though and i hope that Christoph Waltz bags it.. he was fantastic
