 The thing runs iWork, which is Apple's version of Microsoft Office.

With this sort of software I can see where its separating itself from the iPhone. I could see teachers using a unit like this.

 I'm just unshure at who exactly it's marketed at? They say it's a bridge between an iPhone and a Macbook but if you have both then surely it's only real purpose will be as an eReader? And who is going to pay around £600 for an eReader? Plus you can read eBooks on the iPhone anyway. I think this is a case of Apple trying to create a market rather than service one.

Why would someone buy an ebook for that price?

If I were teacher I'd rather have a physical keyboard, especially for lots of typing.

Tru dat,tru. Alas it isn't just an e-reader is it tho? It does everything else too, I see it as an ultra convenient computer that does more than the usual netbook. I'm personally looking forward to the day when my book and magazine consuming is done digitally, as with Borders closing I'm really struggling to get hold of half of the magazines I read regularly. Something like this would remove the problem I'm having.

I mean in the context of standing in front of a class and teaching via a whiteboard. Lecturing if you will. I can easily imagine using such a device while lecturing.

A long time ago! Apple even were on the brink of dropping it a few years back, but it would appear the branding is just too strong. It's quite funny when you think that the "I" actually stands for "internet", which in 1998 when the iMac was launched was actually a major selling point for a computer system.

But it's size is comparable to a laptop, even if it's lighter. You would certainly have to buy a bag of some sort to keep it in so are not saving space either. It would be more sound to buy a 13" macbook than an iPad I think. Same sort of size, more power, more options, etc.

 It's $500. $11 more expensive than a kindle. Thats much cheaper than I was expecting, and half the price of the $1000 predicted.

Its half the price of a 13'' MacBook, and closer to the size of a magazine.

 The conference is over. Im surprised that nothing else was revealed, and it would appear that the iPhone operating system is staying the same in the meantime, at least if the OS of the iPad is anything to go by. The iPad is available in 60 days. I might buy one.

Is it not 60 days stateside. They mentioned that International deals will be done by June/July.

I'm no Applist but my phone contract is up May. Do you reckon we'll see the fourth gen iPhone in June?

But a basic model is only 16GB and has no 3G. You'll have to cough up more for the extras, as usual
