Everyone else seems to be setting up next years threads so why not this one?

Next year? Looks like an early second outing for Being Human, and the great news that Misfits gets a second series. We'll hopefully get to see what Whedon does with the rest of Dollhouse, what Moffat does with the new Doctor and whether superspy Chuck is as engaging as the doofus we're used to.

Same rules as last year - the odd episode, nada. Full series/shows - includes mini-series, non-fiction, one-offs, etc.

The reason it is series, Beetlejuice, is that there is already a thread somewhere on episodes (here or Small Screen). So this has to differentiate

Been watching the first series of Dollhouse for the last two days.....enjoying it apart from the Bodyguard episode which was naff............shame the series as been cancelled, but I am entrigued enough so far to watch what is left and to grab hold of the final and second series.

1. Outnumbered Christmas Special (2009)

A rewatch this morning for the best new show broadcast over Christmas. Andy Hamilton really is a God among comedy writers. Over the past twenty years he's been responsible for some of the most consistent and brilliant British television and radio comedies. Here he reunited with writing partner Guy Jenkins to create possibly the only child-orientated family sitcom that doesn't make you want to commit a series of very brutal crimes. Outnumbered seems to be compared by many people (who haven't bothered to watch it) to the likes of My Family. Which is just bollocks. Outnumbered focuses on the mundane and the everyday, it doesn't rely on zany behaviour to get cheap laughs. Hamilton & Jenkins understand that you don't actually need a lot of action to be funny, you just need strong characters, great dialogue and actors talented enough to pull it off. Hugh Dennis is superb as the father, especially as he's allowed to underplay rather than rely on his talents as a mimic. Claire Skinner is as wonderful as ever and David Ryall is hilarious as her father. The real stars are the children, three of the most natural, likeable and funny child actors ever caught on camera, especially Ramona Marquez who surely has a long and glorious career ahead of her. This was a Christmas offering that showed no sentimentality and manages to actually feel like Boxing Day. And any show that ends with a group singalong to The Felice Brothers is fine with me.

9/10

Elab, are audio play cds allowed in the radio show section, stuff that wasn't actually made for radio? Like if I listen to Make Love the Bruce Campbell way can I include it?

2. The Turn of the Screw (2009)

SPOILERS

I tend to avoid television adaptations of Jane Austen novels. They usually seem to miss the possibility of Austen as satirist and instead throw themselves fully into the 'Oh Mr. Darcy you're so big and strong and your endowment is so large and I'm just a silly girly, gosh, I think I might faint' nonsense. So I hadn't seen Sandy Welch's take on Emma. Or her version of Jane Eyre, although my avoidance of Jane Eyre is because I just know they'll ignore the good stuff of her schooldays and instead focus on the idiotic ending where this absolute bastard named Rochester is somehow transformed into a romantic hero. By the time you get to 'Reader, I married him' you're half expecting Rochester's hand to have grown back, so fully is the sentimental drivel gushing from Bronte. But having just watched Welch's adaptation of The Turn of the Screw I almost wish I had tried her earlier work. Because they might have stopped me wasting my time with this rancid stream of faux-gothic horse-piss.

But let's start with a positive, Michelle Dockery is very good in the lead. In fact she's so good that I almost feel guilty for hating the rest of the film so much. But that's the only positive I could find. The BBC used to have a great tradition of Christmas ghost stories in the 70s and in recent years their adaptations of A View from A Hill and Number Thirteen had been top notch. But in recent years they also produced pretty awful films like their take on Dracula and The Haunted Airman. The Turn of the Screw is worse than either of them. Let's start with the wraparound story. Why exactly has this been added? Oh right, because it allows them to add a feeble 'twist' to the story. The fact that it goes a long way towards stripping the subtlety and ambiguity from the story obviously isn't that important. But then subtlety isn't one of the key strengths of this adaptation.

Let's compare it to The Innocents for a moment. When Peter Wyngarde took on the role of Peter Quint, the director Jack Clayton was intelligent enough to realise he should only be shown in short fleeting moments. That an otherworldly quality could be best evoked by having him be a truly spectral figure so that we're unaware if he really is a ghost or a product of Giddens' delusions. Here however we get seemingly constant flashbacks to him as a human, and seemingly he was little better than a small-time Eastenders reject. He's no longer a figure of rumour and talk among the servants, here we see him beat and rape women in explicit detail. And why does it need to be so explicit? I'm not one to be squeamish about sex in cinema, but we know that Quint and Jessel had sex, what's the point of showing it other than to get a cheap bit of titillation into the story? Welch overheats the story so much that it felt more like a parody of the genre. If she couldn't be bothered to read and understand the story properly, why did she agree to adapt it? The Turn of the Screw is a story that walks a very fine line. We're not supposed to be certain either way if Giddens is mad or if she's haunted. Everything is supposed to be ambiguous and filled with quiet menace, everything is supposed to hang on the individual's interpretation of events. It's not that this film tries to capture that ambiguity and fails, that I could forgive as a decent attempt. This film doesn't even understand the meaning of the word ambiguity. Instead we get laughable possession scenes and wannabe erotic writhings.

Everything is thrust in our face, everything is spoon-fed to us. By the time we get to the ludicrous final scenes it feels more like you're watching an attempt by a Hollywood hack to create a new franchise rather than seeing an adaptation of an intelligent story. Besides that, for some reason they gave Sue Johnston a larger role than required, presumably just because she's Sue Johnston, because the character doesn't need to have that much to do. At times it felt like they were trying to turn her into Mrs. Danvers. The actress playing Miles is too young, the actress playing Flora is too old, and every scene is played at such a height of hysteria that it becomes camp rather than frightening. Dockery does her best to ground the film somewhat but there's little she can do in the face of such idiocy. Her performance is far superior to the film it's stuck in, she deserves far better, as does Henry James. If I see a worse piece of television this year then it's going to have been a really really bad year.

2/10 and I'm being generous for Dockery.

NO.1

  DOLLHOUSE   Series One

Buffy creator Joss reteams with his Vampire Slayer Faith (Eliza Dushku) for a new series that can only be described as the sort of new Quantum Leap.  Instead of poor old Sam leaping into bodies, we have the body of Caroline/Echo, whose programmed with temporary personalities and skills.  In one episode we have her as a crackdown thief, in an other as a teacher and in one badly ill judged case as a back up singer in a poor Bodyguard rip.  The season starts off quite tame, building a story arc without breaking new ground.  Its the first half of the show that is no doubt the weakness and you suspect Joss is playing it safe after suffering the pain of seeing his last major show Firefly cancelled before it had its chance to establish.  Its the midway section that starts to make Dollhouse become lets just say, more interesting.  Tiny twists in the plot begin to surface and the show starts to show a turnaround in structure and style.  A dark tone begins to develop and then we seem to go into Lost zone, in which questions begin to get asked with no apparent answers.  Its by then you can understand why many viewers switched off.  Buffy was a global mega beast because if you take away all the plot threads at its heart was a simple tail of a young girl who just happens to kill Vamps.   Here the plot is more complicated!  An intriguing tale that gets more difficult to follow as the series progresses.  That is no complaint off me, I was surprised at the direction it was going, but you can understand that the viewers who carried over from Buffy are looking for something similar, not so difficult to understand.  For that is why Dollhouse shares more in common with Angel, the Buffy spin off that to me was much better than its parent show, but failed to become as popular because of its different style and a need to branch out to a more adult audience.  The one thing this show did and one that took my breath away, is the final episode.  Epitaph One, the 13th episode that was not shown in its original run in America but is on the DVD as an exclusive.  Never in all my life have I seen a show change formula as quick as this.  I honestly thought I missed out on a few and I had to check the DVD box in case I missed some out.  How big is the change around?  Well its like watching an hour of 24 with Jack running around and getting caught for the usual cliff-hanger, then turning into the next episode and seeing in front of you, his grandson in the future with no sign of Bauer and no explanation of what the show was doing.  Epitaph One is quite a bold move, totally breathtaking at first with the character of Dushku more of a cameo, as we see a bunch of survivors trying to stay alive in a world where the dolls are now now running amok.  It turns into a full Terminator kind of theme and makes the second series now becoming one of my most anticipated of this year!!

My spot!

This year I'm hoping to clear up a backlog of shows I need to watch that have been taped including Breaking Bad S2, I Claudius, Kingdom Hospital, GBH,

THat's some damn good TV viewing.

I've had I, Claudius and GBH since 2006 I'm sure they'll be worth the wait.

" I don't want to go!".........

The final words from a Doctor that has captured so many hearts and will be missed by many.  Not since the long scarf of Tom Baker as there been such a popular feeling towards the man inside the Police Box.  An Alien with two hearts who has managed to break the one heart of Teenage fans everywhere.  The two part special had everything you had come to expect from Russell T Davies.  Some will say "dumb but fun", others will scoff at the plot flaws and "sentimental tosh".  I will combine both opinions and state "it was glorious OTT nonsense that did not leave a dry eye in my house."

In an age where television only offers endless repeats, the land of soap and of course countless reality shows.  Doctor Who shines out as one of the only few programmes that a family can sit and watch.  My kids were in awe when The Master(John Simms) returned from the dead  When the Timelords found a way to cheat death and of course when the "four knocks were heard.  Us adults will ignore the illogic at times as long as the pace is relentless as to be quite honest if you look back beyond all the praise that this special episode will no doubt get, you will find the entire premise was totally nonsense.  As always with a climax by Davies, any problems that seemed impossible were quickly resolved.  The entire build up of Part One in which the Master turned all humans into himself was outdone in a few moments by a wave of an hand.  The Timelords plan to take over earth led by a superb Timothy Dalton spitting and all was solved by one shot from a gun.

Simple solutions that could have annoyed if it was not for the final twist, when all the nonsense that went on before was forgotten by a final bitter swansong of writing by Davies.  No one so it coming, every fan gobsmacked as the person who would knock four times came to our attention.  A fantastic steal the show performance by Bernard Cribbins whose act of heroics bought the demise of the current Doctor.  And so he left, to say goodbye to all his friends in a multiple LOTR ending, which was more of Daives saying his goodbyes than the Doctor himself.  Bye Bye Cpt Jack, Mickey, Martha, Sarah Jane, even a cameo for Billie Piper whose Rose can not still be forgotten by the writing crew.  With his full acting chops working overtime, David Tennant then regenerated into a very young looking Matt Smith leaving behind an episode that will no doubt is destined to be a part of television history

Plans for this year:

I will definitely finish Dexter. Season 4 so far is great, especially after the good (but a bit average) third season. I must also see The Corner. Six Feet Under is an HBO show I haven't seen enough of. Then there's The Prisoner, Seinfeld, M.A.S.H., Battlestar Galactica.

I think I have more than enough for the time being.
