Come and join me, Jayb, rawlinson (no, finishing your top 300 films does not justify the rest of the abandonments ), Homer and swords in the Fail Box, Miles. It's nice and warm, and we have cookies.

That should be the first picture that greets people on the lists forum. Along with a sound file that plays the chant whenever you post to a thread.

Aaand I have a new bottom film for the year
37. Persona (1966, Bergman)
Widely regarded as Bergman's best film, which was the reason I decided to give it a try. It deals with many themes that permeate Bergman's work - sexual tension, fear of death, theatre, etc. At the same time it has the same problems as all of his work that I've seen, with the exception of Wild Strawberries. It's cold, pretentious (yes, pretentious), oh-so-smart, and simply infuriating. Nykvist as usual is the most competent person involved (even though I suspect I watched the film in a wrong ratio, I can't deny the visuals are excellent) and I wouldn't bash the two leads, but man, is this a piece of cinematic excrement (thank you Armond White) or not. It's incredibly tedious even in its super-short running time; it's hysterical; it's so self-important and is an unequivocally depressing experience. The only good thing about it is that it's not as vile as The Virgin Spring.

This isn't the first time you've used 'depressing' as a reason to criticise something (coughGermanyYearZerocoughwhatwereyouexpectingcough) and I've gotta ask 'why?' Unless life has suddenly become a barrel of laughs for everyone on the planet in the last few minutes then art surely has the right, or even the duty, to occasionally be a bit grim/upsetting/melancholy/whatever?

No, you have me all wrong here. Although it's true that depressing films rarely quite click with me, it's not because they're depressing. Come and See, say, is a horrifying experience, and is certainly as grim as war films get in my experience. However, it's an extremely powerful experience and thus uses the upsetting nature of it to the full effect. As for Germany Year Zero, of course the setting is grim, but I couldn't care less about the characters or indeed the film, so it's depressing without anything to back it up.
Same with Persona, my primary reaction was distaste rather than genuine melancholy, so it's depressing in a bad way if that makes any sense.

New entry:

32. The Serpent And The Rainbow (1987, Craven) 5/10
Weak Wes Craven vehicle sees professor Bill Pullman dispatched to Haiti to try and recover a powder which is supposed to revive the dead. A creepy premise ("based on a true story") sadly is wasted as a lot of the scenes end up simply laughable (Pullman gets chased by a possessed chair, Pullman rolls about on the floor with an imaginary leopard) and Craven resorts to the the usual "hero thinks he's in trouble, but actually it was a dream" schtick that got dull by the 2nd Nightmare On Elm Street film and makes it hard to for the audience to invest in the horror as they know that Pullman will likely wake up within seconds. I like Bill Pullman and he puts in good work here, and, in spite of the many flaws in the film, it never gets dull, even if it entertains for all the wrong reasons.

I do like to be entertained by films, but I'm well aware this is not their singular purpose. Persona is shit though one way or another.

Only the opinion has flaws and it is wrong.

Except the cold and tedious bits, that is very much understandable. And I told you this. But you went mad.

44. Glen or Glenda? (Ed Wood, 1953)
Even though it is mostly incomprehensible (what purpose does Lugosi serve?) apart from the narrated parts, there is plenty of laughs to be had at the writing and acting here. Very progressive though, having a transvestite as the lead character in 1953.
