Homer, your list hurts my eyes.

Mine, broken down:

Summary

Count by country           Count by period        Count by month            Count by format

Australia     2  (1.41%)   1950s     1  (0.70%)   January     19 (13.38%)   DVD        51 (35.91%)
China         1  (0.70%)   1960s     9  (6.34%)   February    15 (10.56%)   BD         17 (11.97%)
Denmark       1  (0.70%)   1970s    12  (8.45%)   March       13  (9.15%)   Broadcast  71 (50.00%)
France        2  (1.41%)   1980s     8  (5.63%)   April       11  (7.75%)   Cinema      1  (0.70%)
Germany       1  (0.70%)   1990s    12  (8.45%)   May         14  (9.86%)   YouTube     1  (0.70%)
Hong Kong    13  (9.15%)   2000s    97 (68.31%)   June         8  (5.63%)   Other       1  (0.70%)
Hungary       1  (0.70%)   2010s     3  (2.11%)   July        10  (7.04%)
Italy         1
  (0.70%)                          August      10  (7.04%)
Japan        16 (11.27%)                          September   12  (8.45%)
Netherlands   1  (0.70%)                          October      9  (6.34%)
Russia        1  (0.70%)                          November    15 (10.56%)
South Korea   7  (4.91%)                          December     6  (4.23%)
Soviet Union  1  (0.70%)
Thailand      1  (0.70%)
UK           19 (13.38%)
USA          41 (28.87%)
Mixed        33 (23.24%)

- The number of East Asian films I watched was significantly lower than in previous years - China + HK + Japan + SK + Thailand = 38 vs 41 from USA alone.

- The biggest climber is the Mixed category, but that's cos I took data from IMDb, which seems to include things like the director's nationality or filming locations as countries of origin. Might have to go back to the old presumptious method next year.

- 16 nations were represented (plus Mixed), compared with 17 in 2008 and 20 in 2009.

- The greatest number of films by period, by a long way, was the 2000s, making up more than 2/3rds of my viewing. That must have been skewed by the greatest number of films by format being Broadcast. Basically, (exactly) half of all films I saw this year were on TV, and I seriously neglected the stuff I'd bought. Comparing the DVDs and BDs I viewed in 2010 51 + 17 = 68. My backlog of unwatched DVDs and BDs currently numbers 74... Must try harder.

- The inconsistencies in viewings per month, I guess can be attributed to us watching more TV series during those periods, including the whole of bloody Big Brother and I'm a Celebrity.

- Cinema viewing took a hit, and can be attributed to the arrival of the little mister, but that said, my cinema trips had been in serious decline over the last few years anyway.

-----

Total films viewed: 142
First viewings this year: 123 (86.60%)

Repeat viewings: 17 (11.97%)
New version viewings: 2 (1.41%)

Commentaries viewed: 15

Most viewed directors:
6 - Shane Meadows
4 - Johnnie To

3 -
George A. Romero, Carlos Saldanha
2 - Imamura Shôhei, Bong Joon-ho, Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Andrew Lau & Alan Mak, Miike Takashi, Miyazaki Hayao, Ng See-Yuen, Sam Pekinpah, Tony Scott, Suzuki Seijun, Toyoda Toshiaki

- The total films viewed of 142 isn't too bad, though I'm slightly saddened that I failed to hit 150. In 2008 I saw 157 and in 2009, I saw 173. So there ain't that much difference, although I have watched at least a handful of shorts this year, which bumps that number up a little, though I do have the added excuse that I got myself a son this year, so sitting around watching movies on a weekend is largely a thing of the past.

- As usual, very little of what I saw was repeat viewings. 86.6% of films watched in 2010, I'd never seen before. In 2008 it was 93.63% and in 2009, 93.06%. Though I really would like to re-watch a good number of our films, with my DVD backlog and the stuff belonging to Mrs 123 that I haven't yet seen, I can't see that changing this year.

- The number of commentaries heard is down, because I don't do as much ironing as I used to.

Oh, and December was a funny month, where a film that only got a 6.5/10 was the best I saw. Even with my harsh ratings that seems wrong.

Final update, fashionably late, pithy if not quite Paul-pithy:

Features:

3. Une femme est une femme [A Woman Is a Woman] (1961, Godard)
The camera loves her, Godard loves her, everyone loves her. K-A-R-I-N-A! His best film I've seen - makes fun of Godard's own bullshit, is funny, off-kilter, colourful, and playful. Love.

27. Vampire’s Kiss (1988, Bierman)
One of the most brilliant, unhinged, brave performances I've ever seen, and not just because of the cockroach. Dark, satirical, hilarious, amazing. Wow. I really don't get how people don't like this, and I'm not being remotely ironic, in case you're wondering.

55. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985, Friedkin)
Doesn't match the heights of The French Connection, but few films do. Almost unbearably badass (though the car chase was curiously disappointing, and Müller wasn't as amazing as he usually is, though it's still good-looking). Wang Chung, Dafoe, Stockwell, dark humour, hell yeah.

76. Monkey Business (1931, McLeod)
A delight. Everything is firing at full cylinders here, even the love sub-plot and the musical interludes are great. Harpo in particular is astonishingly hilarious. Also, doesn't feel like a stage play unlike Animal Crackers. Doesn’t reach the satirical mastery of Duck Soup, but a superb example of their zany anarchism.

106. The Bourne Identity (2002, Liman)
Surprisingly good. Subversive, superbly cast, with engaging action. Slightly under-cooked, but as I love Euro-thrillers I'll let that pass.

115. Italiensk for begyndere [Italian for Beginners] (2000, Scherfig)
Sex, loneliness, and death, together in a great film. A pleasant surprise after the sour experience of Festen. Might watch An Education in a couple of days.

119. Bad Santa (2003, Zwigoff)
Kinda odd in that its vicious attack on Christmas magically disappears when the ending arrives, but it's funny, sharp, has great use of music, and Lauren Graham. And even though it shouldn't, the aforementioned ending does the "feel-good" job, maybe because there's only so much "oh look, he's a Santa who swears, drinks, and fucks" you can take.
PS. Crumb and Ghost World look amazing, but I am quite happy I broke ground with this.

131. Melinda and Melinda (2004, Allen)
Another one that's surprisingly underrated. Considering it's Zsigmond, it's kinda plain-looking (but then again most of Woody's films bar Manhattan are, it's just something one has to live with), but otherwise it's great. The acting is great (especially Ferrell and Sevigny), there are some great lines and none really irritating ones. The comedy and the tragedy blend in together but I think that's the point, either way, it works. I'll take it over his "2 best films of the decade" any day.

152. The Insider (1999, Mann)
Very solid. Long but never slow, with atmospheric visuals as usual, a remarkably restrained Pacino performance and an excellent one by Crowe, and a sub-Network/Good Night and Good Luck plot, which is still satisfying. Plus, you know, smoking is evil, so I'm all for that.

153. Pi (1998, Aronofsky)
Great high contrast low budget cinematography and as usual, great work by Mansell. Bit of a mess plot-wise, but I like maths and it's a nice idea to build a conspiracy thriller around it. My favourite film of his from the 3 I've seen this year (well, last year), and I'm really looking forward to Black Swan.

183. Somewhere (2010, S. Coppola)
My dad and sister who I saw this with hated it. The critics loved it, for the most part. I'm on the fence, as usual. Coppola tries to do Antonioni here, and it doesn't quite work (and as far as films about estranged celebrities go, yes, her own Lost in Translation is far superior), but it drew me in. The atmosphere is nice, I like the pop culture references, the food looks tasty, and Fanning is talented. I think this is my first encounter with Dorff, but I liked him, too. The masseur bit is silly though.

191. Requiem for a Dream (2000, Aronofsky)
Speaking of Aronofsky. This one's quite overrated by the IMDB crowd but I won't let that count against it. It goes beyond being just about drugs, though not that far. The hyperactive editing is actually kinda annoying (though maybe that's a sign of effectiveness). The performances are great (even from Wayans), the ending is fantastic, and it's a tough watch, which again is in its favour, though I probably won't revisit it any time soon, if at all. Mansell is the star as usual, even better than Burstyn.

Shorts:

6. The Meaning of Life (2005, Hertzfeldt) {12 mins}
I take back what I said about this - it's almost as amazing as his best films. Super-ambitious and succeeds - a rare combination (it's not a combination, but shut up)

28. Six Shooter (2004, McDonagh) {27 mins}
Awesome, love McDonagh's sense of humour and the pop-culture references (the Curtis one is especially poignant for obvious reasons).

29. Sex and Violence (1997, Plympton) {8 mins}
Awesome, love Plympton's sense of humour. My second film by him, incidentally, same as with the guy above, and it didn't disappoint, same as with the guy above. That gag with the key - amazing.

35. Wisdom Teeth (2010, Hertzfeldt) {5 mins}
Like if you took the "my anus is bleeding" bit from Rejected, changed that to teeth, and stretched for 5 minutes. Hence, funny, but only if you like Hertzfeldt, and even then, probably his weakest that I've seen. Still great.

84. I Love to Singa (1936, Avery) {8 mins}
Watched it in French (the song wasn't dubbed), so maybe shouldn't say anything, but it's average by Avery's standards. I get the Jazz Singer parody even though I haven't seen it, but the short itself is cute, with one good gag and nothing more.

MOVIES WATCHED IN 2010: 340

*The core of the list falls under the 3 STAR column, meaning around half of all the movies I watched this year I considered merely average. Sometimes these were a pleasant surprise from a title I didn't expect and on many occassions I was left disappointed (blockbusters). *

*5 STAR (KISSING THE SKY)
titles mostly consist of titles I have seen in the past: "classics", with very few new titles even troubling a 5 STAR rating. Although a few just missed out.*

*1 STAR (KISSING THE FLOOR) titles speak for themselves in my opinion. By far the worst movie I saw this year was
Halloween II (Rob Zombie, 2009), which infuriated me on many levels and considering I also sat through Porn Shoot Massacre (Corbin Timbrook, 2009), (thanks Lovefilm!!) and a hacked to pieces Game of Death, The (Robert Clouse, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo (uncredited), Bruce Lee (uncredited), 1978), takes some doing.*

Nice. Thanks for putting this up. I'd, err, query the 3-star rating for Mr Smith Goes to Washington, but I'm always improbably fascinated by these lists.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

It's my number one too. I've just got to stick a few last films on my list this evening, then I'll put it up here. I've spoiled the #1, but it's always the same anyway.

Congrats TRM, you have impeccable taste.

Looking a bit closer, I see it's only his #1 for December, so I'll retract the congratulations and give him a strong talking to instead. But his Top 100 does positively reek of class.

Yeah, I was suprised by that rating for Mr Smith..., but I did watch it way back last Feb and I do go off how I viewed it at the time and go with that rating. This does lead to some raised eyebrows come year-ending reviews mind you!!

Cheers ears. I've got to go to a council meeting later, but can hopefully stick it all up tonight or tomorrow. For some reason it takes me about an hour to format it on here. That's not very interesting, but it is true.

I am now. But surely you are curious about these propaganda films? As despicable as they may be, I still want to find them.

There are bits and places about for academic purposes - I've got most of it on a video from a course on propaganda during and between the 2 world wars. If I recall correctly, this was one of the first films Rawlinson reviewed this year - so it'll be in the first 3-4 pages of the thread.

Interesting because you liked True Grit better or because you hated them both?

On the Orphans front, have you seen Neds yet? It's the film I'm most interested in at the moment.

MOTH's Final Standings 2010

106 films in total, which pales besides some others above, but never mind the length, feel the girth. Fnarr, fnarr.

At the top, Hoop Dreams becomes the first 'new' film since 2007 to achieve MOTH's hallowed 10/10 rating, and is carried shoulder high into my Holiest of Holies.

Cool.

I see you're persisting with the whole "Princess and the Frog is amazing" thing. Full marks for bloody-mindedness (and keeping a straight face), anyway.

  1. True Grit (2010; Joel Coen, Ethan Coen)
  2. Toy Story 3 (2010; Lee Unkrich)
  3. The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006; Ken Loach)
  4. Orphans (1997; Peter Mullan)

The order of the top 2 there is interesting. I'm pleased to see Orphans inn the final 100 too

Interesting because you liked True Grit better or because you hated them both?

On the Orphans front, have you seen Neds yet? It's the film I'm most interested in at the moment.

It opens on the 21st so I'll be catching it then.
