The size of the hand does convey some of it, but I'd have to go with the dialogue addition. Ta both

Think you've spent too long thinking you are legend.

What are you referring to, Gram?

I think Cars got to him, guys. Time to snap him out of it, pronto.

Conan The Destroyer (Richard Fleischer)

And I end this year on a rather bizarre and random note. This sword and sorcery adventure actually has a fair amount of talent behind it - Fleischer was no slouch and Jack Cardiff himself was the cinematographer on it. Predictably, they're the best aspects to it - some stunning visuals and awesome set design do conjure up the feel of another world and way of life, but really it's all about polishing a turd. Performances are awful and annoying to a man and the plot is extremely derivative 'rag-tag band on a quest stuff'. Aside from that, it does nothing but make you appreciate just what a superb job Peter Jackson and his crew did on the LOTR trilogy. (5.5/10)

Oh shut up, I was referring to something really bad and you know it.

Hypocrite.
quote:

You'll find many defenders of segregation. Doesn't make it right. But then, I Am Legend is neither The Boondock Saints nor segregation, which is my point.

Indeed, though I am Legend is as bad as segregation. [Is aware that this is a form of Godwin's Law]

quote:

It exists, and there's no attention called to it as a particularly intrusive thing, and that's how it's real. And I think Lawrence achieved that.

I can see the intention but I just couldn't get to like it. My loss then, it just made most of the film dull.
quote:

Really, you should get over your third act hang-ups to really engage with this - it may as well be a completely different film, the way I see it.

But I can't, you have two acts building to it then you fail to deliver a proper conclusion to all you have shown. Again, it is probably unfair and I don't tend to do it with most films, but this was particularly egregious.

quote:

Yes, it's horribly detrimental, but it's worth noting that the crucial ending was changed by executive meddling (admittedly not from something great, but from something more consistent thematically -

That just the blame out of Lawrence though. It's still in the film.

quote:

Neville's knowing glance at the cured vampire shows that he knows that they're there for her, and he sacrifices himself the same way the lead vampire was sacrificing himself. It's a tacit acknowledgement rather than an outright one)

Wow, Neville is a bastard.

quote:

It sounds horribly condescending, but divorce the two and you may get my point a bit more.

I see your point and you are right, but sadly I find the third act way too awful and what preceded was just a sometimes decent film.

Crap, I didn't manage to even watch 50 films this year. I haven't been to the cinema at all (that's a first)
New people and toddlers have that effect. Just think how much choice I'll have once they're all grown up...

Some wonderful stuff there. Paul obviously has a stonking no. 1 and I think I like Impqueen's top 100 most, overall (The Wind. Moolaade, Triplets, In the Loop, Fright Night, Went the Day Well and Kiss of the Spider Woman,

At least Rinc took to Lee Chang-Dong as well as a high placing for Canterbury Tale and some lovely Humphrey Jennings stuff.

Was that your first viewing of Tokyo Godfathers, Trm? Apologies if you've said before, my memories going to pot. And Rick will be thrilled to see someone else look out Remember the Night - another from my shortlist but ruled out because of the lack of availability (mine is on VHS). I saw 5 cm per sec is getting a DVD release over here very shortly. I really don't think Solomon Kane deserved 2nd last though  HOmer's list just makes me jealous of those films I've not been able to see yet this year, like Made in Dagenham. But not Ninja Assassin - Homer's early review this year put me off even putting it on my rental list for completeness sake - ratified by it's bottom placing here in 2 lists!

This part of the year is always great. I love going through everyones top 100 and picking off some recommendations

Yeah that was my first viewing of it. I still havent got around to any of the rest of Kon's work despite having them on dvd for ages. I expect it will get a decent vote from me for the hof (and Scrooge would have got about the same placement ).

I only checked out Remember the night because of Rick, but I dont know why I even needed to wait that long when looking at the starring pair. They really are amazing together, and I can see this quickly becoming a big favourite. There is a R1 dvd btw (http://www.amazon.com/Remember-Night-Barbara-Stanwyck/dp/B0047O2FPI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293920524&sr=8-1####).

5cm per second dvd is very very high on my to buy list. Such a gorgeous film

I actually dont really remember either Ninja Assassin or Solomon Kane. Both annoyed me a hell of a lot at the cinema (and Homer being annoyed as well im sure just made sure our placings were secure for them right away) but long term havent bothered me quite as much as some of the ones above it. That is always the problem with ranking them straight away though.

Is the DVD the Warners Bros in house release? I seem to recall it turned up on their lists. The film's one of the reasons I lament the underratedness of Leisen more than anything else - I really wish I'd been able to see this on the big screen as I'm sure it turned up at the Leisen retro at the Edinburgh FF a couple of years ago.

I think there was a in house release, but I cant find any information on that one. This is the TCM release though. I acquired it through other means, but TCM normally do a good job with their releases. I will certainly be picking it up.

I was wrong - it must have been TCM I meant. I think Rick posted the link to their shop when I very brightly said I couldn't find it (when it was right on the site in front of me!) - they were a little expensive and shipping more so, but if they are on Amazon too that's much much better. Especially as I have a nice big guilt gift cert to spend e
