 Short reviews of the last films I'll be seeing in a while (assuming I don't get to see The Social Network the night before I head off to CHIIINA) -

101. Heisei tanuki gassen pompoko (Pom Poko) (1994, Takahata, JPN) - 4/5
Takahata Isao's environmental fable has its heart in the right place, and while its 'urban development is LARGELY TERRIBLE unless a compromise can be found' message can sometimes be overbearing, the film's goofy, personable protagonists act as a kind of filter that keeps the preaching to a minimum and couches it in a constantly-changing, always-endearing animation style. The narrative itself jumps around all over the place, and the narration is deployed more frequently than it needs to be, but it reinforces the film's 'national fable' construct and allows us the ability of spending more time getting to know the characters, watching magic tricks, and being entertained by Takahata's starry-eyed sense of wonder at traditional myths and tales. It's all ludicrously enjoyable and surprisingly provocative, simply by being not as on-the-nose about things as Miyazaki is wont to be.

167. Mimi wo sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart) (1995, Kondo, JPN) - 3.5/5
Whisper of the Heart has the same light approach to its coming-of-age story that Kiki's Delivery Service does, so it's no surprise that Miyazaki wrote both (and was moulding Kondo in his vision before his untimely death). As such, Whisper suffers from the same key problem - nothing really feels like it has much importance. While Whisper places an obvious primacy on the (romantic) relationships fostered in junior high school and the threat of what lies ahead, there's just something to Miyazaki's approach that makes you realise how trivial it all is in comparison to what comes next, almost distancing us from the characters through our own knowledge of what comes next and causing us to feel the two-hour runtime slightly more than we should (the hyperbolic ending, one which threatens to tip everything into a wave of cheesy emotions, fairly justifies this concern). There's also some issues with the animation, never prominent enough to be outright bad, but never small and insignificant enough to be waved off - a blank gaze there, an off-model face there, an elongated neck there, an odd movement there. That said, though, it's still a very sweet and charming film with sharp characterisation and a reassuring message that it's all going to be alright in the end.

46. Wonder Boys - 9/10
Great performances in this subtle comedy, very likeable.

63. Sliding Doors - 9/10
Now normally I'm not a sucker for romantic comedies but I totally loved this. A neat twist shows a parallel life for our protoganist, played with charm by Gwyneth Paltrow but it's John Hannah that steals the film as the love interest.

145. Monsters - 6/10
This draaaagss.... Good two lead performances however the message to the movie is a little too forced. Watch an episode of Fringe instead.

191. Vampires Suck - 0/10
Don't know why I bother, the only good thing I have to say about this is that the guys are actually hotter than the Twilight guys. And that's it.

194. Alpha and Omega - 0/10
This is one of the problems of babysitting my neice, have to watch pointless animated films like this. This sits comfartably between Space Chimps 2 and Alvin and the Chipmunks Squeakquel. One of the saddest things about this film is it's Dennis Hopper's last role and its dedicated to him. yeesh

 I've marked it above flippin' average!
Bear in mind that the way I rate things (i.e. the right way ) generally seems to equate to a -1 point shift, give or take, compared to how most other people on here rate. So if I was Gimli or someone (god forbid!), I'd have probably rated it 6.5.

I did kinda like the premise and the gritty flared-pants Seventies-ness of it. But some of the acting was a bit dodge, it was maybe a bit overlong, and the Pekinpah slow-mo deaths got silly after the tenth one... I'm glad I finally saw it, though.

 Rawls, got your PM. I'll write up something small for my nom, but with my exam on Friday and my flight on Saturday, I can't put together too much.

Also, you know how I said I probably wasn't going to watch any more films this month except maybe The Social Network?

12. The Incredibles (2004, Bird, USA) - 4.5/5**

I lied.

I love this film too much. Some of the effects are showing their age and the opening interviews don't get me like they used to, but damn this film is glorious. It has everything - superheroes, brilliant jokes, superb action, striking design, keenly-observed commentary, a critique of free-market capitalism, Jason Lee getting hammy, "Honey, where's my supersuit?", Craig T Nelson - everything.

 Lebanon (Samuel Maoz, 2009)
A bit like Paul the Psychic Octopus: based in a tank, moves fairly slowly and is quite predictable. And, like Paul, when the end finally comes, you wonder what all the fuss was about (5/10)

Four Lions (Chris Morris, 2010)
Some very funny ideas and moments here, but not as sharp as you might expect from Morris and feels curiously insubstantial. Couple of genuine belly laughs though. (7/10)

 Twin Peaks - The Pilot (David Lynch, 1990)
Slighty cheating here since it's strictly a TV episode, but for my money this is the best thing Lynch has ever done, primarily because it takes the best elements of all his other films and balances them together to produce something truly special, not to mention something which effectively changed the landscape of TV viewing for the next 20 years.
The principal characters are introduced economically, but memorably. The clues/red herrings for the murder mystery are wonderfully tantalising, setting up an immediately arresting whodunnit. It's darkly comic, both in terms of characters and in poking fun at the traditional American soap-opera. Angelo Badalamenti's beautiful music ranges from playful to mournful to ominous, complementing the visuals and themes perfectly. And, best of all, it's played through with an ominous, foreboding undertone, which hints at the disturbing revelations to come as the layers of small-town respectability are peeled back. Brilliant (10/10)

024. Some Like It Hot (Wilder, 1959) USA (DVD)
It remains one of the funniest films ever made.

025. Les triplettes de Belleville / Belleville Rendez-Vous (2003, Chomet) FR (DVD)
I never come away from a viewing of this less than happy, it is a beautiful film and is always near or in my Top 100 Films. I still haven’t seen The Illusionist though, which makes me sad.

079. The Social Network (Fincher, 2010) USA (First View) (Cinema)
How enertertaining is this film? It was excellent, being a West Wing nerd I had no worries about the script and it has some fantastic lines but even more so, the direction is fluid (I find Fincher a bit yo-yo), I loved the soundtrack and the performances from the young-ish cast were all uniformly excellent. I thought Jesse Eisenberg was great, I love seeing Andrew Garfield getting more and more recognition before he gets caught up in the whole Spiderman insanity, Justin Timberlake was annoyingly good and Armie Hammer (Josh Pence ) as the Winklevoss Brothers were so much fun to watch.

225. Daybreakers (Peter and Michael Spierig, 2009) USA (First View) (DVD)
It took two people to direct this?

Philosophy win.


I was being a little silly with my review. Reeves adds some interesting visual flourishes and develops one character in a slightly different manner. The whole thing is done really well, it's an excellent film. But so was the first one. To say one is better is a little moot. They are almost exactly the same.
