And being laughed at is so much nicer than having someone be hostile to you?! And that bit about making him your hero...wow, could you be any more patronising?

He was a prick first (or was it you with the original, bitchy comment?). I responded in turn.

quote:

In fact the way you've unearthed all of this again just shows how smugly you sit among the lists and top 10s regulars and use easy targets for your own ego wankery.

Wasn't there once a time when people in this sub-forum had a sense of humour? Oh, I miss the Miles thread of the summer.

quote:

Can't you just let the past stay in the past, maybe don has gone away and done some homework or changed his view on certain things, it just seems every time he steps foot in this part of the forum a few people start raving about how stupid he was a year or two ago and we don't see him again for months.

Well, to be fair, at least one of the comments I highlighted only happened a few months ago (when he came into a thread and tried to be insulting as per usual, as he did so here). At that's really what this is about- the entire point that someone could genuinely care that much about an internet forum and what someone said on it to occasionally turn up now and again and throw more offence people's way . And he did it again here, so what's the problem with taking the piss back? I genuinely couldn't care, but reverse and it seems to throw up controversy from someone who is taking things far too seriously. Christ, calm down, and try to pull your head back together. It's an internet forum. Who genuinely cares?

Now, quit lecturing Gramps.

Edit: And I've only just noticed this:

quote:

but responding to his supposedly aggressive and demeaning words in that way doesn't exactly make you sound much better. In fact the way you've unearthed all of this again just shows how smugly you sit among the lists and top 10s regulars and use easy targets for your own ego wankery.

Spectacular irony!

How does one wank an ego? Sigmund Freud would have a field day with this imagery.

I haven't studied Jung but Freud is a bit a tosser (a smug ego tosser mayhaps?), so I don't doubt you.

Aren't the 'Lists and Top 10's regulars' officially known as 'The Empire Crew?'

Anyway, I think this is the first argument I've started in aaaages. How times change etc.

that said, ethnography is evil. I don't mind anthropology in general (even if it's just the second subject I'm obliged to take with my English degree) but ethnography makes me want to pile rocks on my head til death.

Back to films, anyone?
Films:

3. Alfie (1966, Gilbert)
Watched it in film class, and it was a very pleasant surprise. I did expect it to be good, but it was great (despite the poor quality of the school projector and the fact that we had to watch it on two separate occasions which I usually resent). Caine is superb as the titular anti-hero, and the film is brilliant at combining light-hearted humour with deeply unpleasant scenes. 9

Shorts:

1. Cops (1922, Keaton/Cline) {18 mins} RW
First re-watch of the year for me, and what a re-watch. Still the best Keaton short I've seen, and this viewing was even better than the last one. Gags (horse telephone), chases (CHASES!), and a wonderful fatalistic ending. Maybe I'll watch The General before the end of the month, meanwhile, this is an easy 10
You can watch it here.

7. Présentation ou Charlotte et son steak [Charlotte and her Steak] (1960, Rohmer) {9 mins}
Watched it because Rohmer died. It's nothing special really, with some vague charm, and snow. At least it's short. 6 I'll have a proper tribute in February, methinks.

INdeed. And chat on films.

But it was made clear last year - and multi-page derailing to reminisce on old grudges has no place in here. Or, to be honest, anywhere really when the namecalling is on the edge of being started again.

In personal threads there might be a tad more leeway. Not in here. Please. And thank you.

I don't see any difference between personal threads and this in terms of rules, my thread might have gone off-topic every second second (), but apart from rawls vs barkers there was no genuine name-calling ever AFAICR...

Isn't it a bit hypocritical to lecture Jayb while at the same time calling him names?

If you're referring to the "ego wankery", that was the impression jbg's comments gave, not a name.

quote:

I don't track don's every move and wasn't aware of whatever happened a few months ago. In fact I miss quite a lot of stuff that goes on around here, so much for taking it seriously. Speaking of which…Kapo/ Daney (was it? amongst other things) argument last summer. Come on, who's serious here?  Wasn't that a day long argument, did you even eat anything that day?

EDIT: Sorry elab, only just seen your warning.  I won't say anymore about it.
