I haven’t seen The Apartment in at least two years, I think the ending is rightly celebrated and both Lemmon and MacLaine are superb, in fact it’s a damn fine film all round, still not one of my all time favourites though.

It’s been a worthwhile day, an early morning film from Miyazaki (made me feel a lot better after the excess of the previous evening) a trip to the cinema for a couple of new releases and back home in time for two interesting, bizarre and thoroughly excellent films, plus tea.

01. The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (Quay, 2005) GER/UK/FR (First View) 8.5
02. Gake no ue no Ponyo / Ponyo (Miyazaki, 2008) JPN (First View) 8.2
03. Bakjwi / Thirst (Park, 2009) SKR (First View) 8
04. Nowhere Boy (Taylor-Wood, 2009) UK/CAN (First View) 6
05. Sherlock Holmes (Ritchie, 2009) UK/AUS/USA (First View) 6

I should probably justify my 6 rating for Sherlock Holmes, even more so being a massive Sherlockian, well I can’t I enjoyed the stupid film. I really feel quite awful for doing so I cannot stand anything Guy Ritchie has done in the past, I dislike Jude Law as a screen presence and I’ve become increasingly indifferent towards Downey Jr since he became popular (err yeah, irrational I know) and the film is in every way incredibly lightweight and bastardised and yet...fun.

Right I might have a go at this. First viewings in red is easier.

1. Pulp Fiction (1994) 10/10
Classic 90s trashy-cool from Tarantino. Barely aged a day.

2. Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy (2004) 10/10
Eminently quotable, utterly hilarious comedy from the Frat Pack, probably the funniest film of the 00s

3. Miller's Crossing (1986) 9/10
Maybe the Coen brothers' best film, a darkly humorous gangster flick starring human punching bag Gabriel Byrne.

4. Romancing The Stone (1984) 8/10
Fun, light-hearted adventure romp that never takes itself too seriously.

5. Natural Born Killers (1994) 8/10
All-out assault on the senses, more than a bit excessive but a hell of a trip.

6. Child's Play 2 (1990) 5/10
Mildly entertaining return of everyone's favourite psychopathic doll, Chucky.

Homer - How come you only have 2 films listed? Did you not go to the cinema, or are you already hiding films?

Eventful first day of the year - recorded The Apartment (which I shall watch tomorrow), watched the two musicals around my girlfriends (I shall leave it up to you to guess whether I scored me some nookie), and then New Years film with the family had to be our new Blu-Ray, Monsters, Inc.

  1. Monsters, Inc. (Docter, 2001, USA) Jan

Pixar are masters of their craft - a craft which is filmmaking. Forget the fact that they deal solely in animation and have for their whole history. It's only quite recently that animation has really been applauded for being able to fashion a fantastic film (see Waltz With Bashir, Persepolis or any of Studio Ghibli's work) and not just great kids films, as I reckon Toy Story once was regarded as; a flash in the pan outlier for great CGI films. Thankfully, Pixar have kept up the work over the 15 years they've been in motion pictures now, with almost each subsequent film said to better the last. My personal favourite however is 2001's Monsters, Inc., a work of breathtaking imagination that improves on every viewing. Key to the film's success is the voice work, deftly handled by a supporting cast of Steve Buscemi as the villain Randall, James Coburn as the CEO of Monsters, Inc., Mr Waternoose and an adorable Mary Gibbs as Boo. It's the lead pairing of John Goodman and Billy Crystal as Sulley and Mike respectively that makes Monsters, Inc. so fantastic to watch; indeed, Mike is probably the funniest Pixar character along with Finding Nemo's Dory, and for what it's worth, its the most consistently funny Pixar film as well. The growth of Pixar and the maturity of its films that came after Monsters, Inc. aren't a bad reflection on it however; its ability to provide laughter for all the family without pandering to children the way the majority of Dreamworks films do is testament to its quality. The animation also in my opinion has rarely been bettered. The landscapes in both Wall•E and Up may be better, but for me, looking at Sulley's fur blow when he snores in the opening 5 minutes of the film is just absurdly fantastic and beautiful (especially on Blu-Ray). Apart from Cars, there's not one Pixar film I would call less than excellent. It's a wonderful thing, to return to a film that was made when you're a child and still be fantastic - and not just because of nostalgia. Monsters, Inc. is a brilliant film that will stand the test of time and be regarded as a classic alongside animation's best.

  2. Moulin Rouge! (Luhrmann, 2001, AUS/USA) Jan

As it can be with musicals, sometimes the story gets lost in translation when the songs take centre stage. Such is the case with Moulin Rouge!, a fantastically directed, brilliantly choreograped, masterfully designed and competently acted film that in the end, is cold and soulless. All of the musical numbers are great (although suffer a bit from the fact that they weren't written for the film; while this lets us identify with songs we might already love, it doesn't really give the film its own identity) and despite Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman's lukewarm chemistry, some of the supporting cast are very good, especially Jim Broadbent's turn as the owner of the titular cabaret. However, when there's 300 songs every 5 minutes that I know fully well were written by U2 and Elton John, I can't feel close to the characters because it's not their songs (or your song, as Elton would have put it!). And as such, it made for a pretty, but ultimately heartless film. Avatar on Monday...

  3. Dreamgirls (Condon, 2006, USA) Jan

Again, a musical where the majority of feeling is sucked out of it by the songs. I thought the actual acting scenes were just filler while waiting for the next big number to come along, and the direction certainly didn't help by being as low key and boring as possible; neither did Knowles and Foxx's performances, cliched as they come as the naive singer and the manipulative mogul. Eddie Murphy however was quite good despite being overhyped for the Oscars a couple of years ago; he's good, but a lot of people could have done the same role. It's only because it's Murphy and he's been shit since Bowfinger that everyone made such a big deal out of it. Jennifer Hudson however, ex-American Idol contestant, is rather excellent as Effie White, and delivers both her lines and her songs with feeling and emotion that put the rest of the cast to shame. It's competent, but so uninspiring the whole way through that you really wonder why Hudson makes the effort.

Entering the performances list are:

  1. Mike Wazowski - Billy Crystal (Monsters, Inc.)
  2. James P Sullivan - John Goodman (Monsters, Inc.)
  3. Effie White - Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls)
  4. Harold Zidler - Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge!)

1. The Orphanage (2007, Bayona) – 8/10
Well-made Spanish horror film that is not only scary, but also tells a great story. Ultimately, what brings it down from a 9 or even a 10 is its lack of courage. Several times I felt like it was holding back or something. Many of the scenes are tense, but they never last long, and so some of the effect wears off. The ending too suffers from the same thing, as it eschews grimness for a Disney-like tone that feels far too optimistic (quite the accomplishment when one considers what actually is happening). Worth watching, though a tiny bit disappointing.

I'm off to pop my 2010 cinema cherry tomorrow... pray for me.

My list is now sporting a nifty graphic which will be updated every few films. It serves as both a sequential pictorial record of what I've seen this year, but also as a recognisable graphic when I'm scrolling down the page quickly to update the damned thing!

Incidentally, I've designed the graphic so will be room for 225 films. I have no idea how many films I watch at home, but figure if it's at least equal to my cinema viewing then I should fill the entire square easily. if I need more room, I may start another one. Or, I might make it a cube and have some parallelogram shaped cut out pictures of films for the side and top...

Epiphany Demon, you make me happy. I wish I had seen Monsters Inc. Instead, I saw...

1. The Ant Bully (1st view, 2006, John A. Davis) - 3/5*
It gets 3 as I was in a good mood when I watched it. A Bug's Life is better. Antz is better. Honey I Shrunk The Kids is better.

01. The Wind (Sjöström, 1928) USA 9 - Quite simply, a stunning piece of cinema.

05. The School of Rock (Linklater, 2003) USA 7
- I believe this is my 3rd or 4th viewing of School of Rock and I definitely enjoyed it a whole lot more than I have on previous viewings and I now sort of get the praise the film receives.

The ideas were interesting, Willis was decent, it was well filmed and there are some decent moments. Plus its nowhere as fucking dull as Avatar.
