The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow)

. The sub-plot of James going hunting after Bekim (Beckham?), the kid selling pirate DVDs on the military base, is still pretty awkward,

But it is the standard man at war being humanised cliche - bonding with a local boy. Which just demonstrates IMO that the film is little more than the same old same old with different set-pieces. Of that ilk, I quite like Stargate

Yes! Not that I consider it a guilty pleasure or anything

I've been meaning to rewatch Stargate for a while, and this is the inspiration I needed.

I wouldn't look to me for credible back-up though - I am currently loving the Eight-Legged Freaks rewatch

006) Where the Wild Things Are  (Spike Jonze, USA / Germany, 2009, BD) - 7.5
Enjoyed it!

Preferred the likes of 3 Burials and The Proposition in this modern western genre, but I thought this was alright.

Ratings may change slightly upon reflection....

As for non-HOF stuff watched this month, short reviews:
38. The Gold Rush (1925, Chaplin)
The romantic aspect of it is great, very touching. Is a prototype for most high school movies - outsider desires girl, she goes with the asshole despite initial resistance, but ends up with the outsider. Some individual scenes are justly acclaimed, but it took a while to get going and could work better as a whole. Still, respect. 8

Shorts:

15. Pas de deux (1968, McLaren) {13 mins} youtube
Pure beauty on celluloid. Unlike most of McLaren's stuff, this is not pure animation, but takes a 'real' dance and transforms it into something intangible. 9

36. The Heart of the World (2000, Maddin) {6 mins} youtube
Fun, think it will get better on re-watches though. 7

44. L'ère industrielle: Métamorphoses du paysage [Changing Landscape] (1964, Rohmer) {22 mins}
A Rohmer film that's not about relationships. Thus odd. The photo-essay approach resembles Marker, but it's all quite dry and hammers the simple point home through intellectual means. Still, was much more engaging than it might have been. 7

I certainly see why people hate Bueller, but I thought Broderick pulled the unlikely and unlikeable character who gets away with everything off so that I genuinely rooted for him.

Apparently there was recently some kind of 'event' with Ferris Bueller redone via Twitter from Ferris. It might be around to read if you'd like, Miles.
