Have to disagree with you Nexus I don't  think that the effects have aged in Jurassic Park they still look stunning even now. And while the effects in Avatar are fine I felt that Star Trek or District 9 had much better effects work then Avatar. And I would also say the Jurassic Park is about both dinosaurs and people. You care about the people in Jurassic Park.

Not having a go and respect your opinion.

No worries mate! Afterall thats why we're here, to 'discuss' films!

I do agree with you on the point though, that Star Trek (which i loved!) had excellent special effects; it blended in seemlessly with the story/action. Unlike the Star Wars prequels, esp Part 1 and 2 (clones is just embarrasing!). District 9 also had excellent effects work. The thing with Avatar is, that it had excellent effects work, then soon after, we'd see poor effects work; it just wasn't as effective in some places. We the audience arent easily fooled, we can tell what is real and what is not real. Watching it in the cinema, after maybe 90 mins it started to jar quite a bit.

As for Jurrasic Park, i'll be honest with you, i haven't watched the first one for some time now. I'll probably buy it soon on Blu Ray for my son 'cos he's really into dinosaurs!! But the effects as i remember might hold up today. I think the T-Rex effects will hold up pretty good. However, if you re-watch the part when Sam Neil and Co first see the dinosaurs' and we see a herd of very large Diplodocus' or Brontosaurus', that effects work right there has not aged that well. So overall i do agree with you that yes, even by today's standard's JP is quite impressive!!!

Just want to finish off with a little about Star Trek; i did mention that i loved the new film, but just between you and me, i have ALL the Star Trek films!! Why is that surprising you may ask? Well there's this little problem of me being a STAR WARS geek as well!!! Ha ha! Do we have many people who like BOTH franchises?

Phew! I guess it's okay to be a fan of both!! with all the rivalry and what not!!

There's just something about Star Trek which i find really charming. Not to mention the whole premise; to boldy go! As for Star Wars - i grew up watching the films (4,5,6) and will forever be a fan of them......

Lets just say, i'm a fan of sci-fi first and foremost, hence my love for both !

Cheers!

Nexus, good on ya. The forum is a bit of fun and it is healthy & dare I say it natural to have people disagreeing! But you must be a good egg if you are a sci-fi fan!

Funnily enough I totally agree that AOTC is the worst of the Star Wars movies.

As for Trek, I do think II is the best but I love, LOVE the 1982 version of The Motion Picture (had to buy it on VHS and then dub it onto DVD).

First time I saw it I thought it was AMAZING. But now that I think about it, like people are saying, when you go past the effects (which are undeniably fantastic) it really is nothing special. No good dialogue, no gun porn, no grunts (or some form of macho-ism), nothing compared to Cameron's other films. The story itself lacked depth, and I DO care about story more than gun porn, grunts and dialogue. No doubt, the actors were great and yes, it was emotional, but it just didn't resonate with me as a standout film.

Little off-topic but I gotta say: between Avatar and The Hurt Locker... the Oscar should have gone to Up.

Actually I disagree in that Avatar was ground breaking and it deserved the Best Picture Oscar at least as much as Titanic or LOTR: ROTK.

Nothing wrong with being a fan of different sci-fi franchises.I like ALL the Star Wars movies(1-6),and ALL the Star Trek movies(1-11) to a certain extent.

Farscape is better than both SW and ST though.

I was wrong, Avatar is GREAT! I saw it the other day for the first time since it was released, the first time I came away feeling disappointed and just a general feeling of "Where the fuck are my badass space marines?" I was hoping for Aliens Cameron to show up instead of overly sentimental Titanic Cameron. Watching it again, we got the best of both really, its a fantastic experience from start to finish (Blu-ray looks great!), love the new stuff at the start on future earth...it gives us a nice intro to Jake and his mindset.

James Camerons Avatar is purely an 'eye candy cgi art' film, which has a basic good guys vs bad guys plot.
And I liked it,becuase it is what it is.
Yes characters would blatantly give the audience plot points, and yes the bad guys are classicly stereotyped (as are the good guys)  but for me I cant be overly cynical to a film that was overly enjoyable and the cgi eye candy was to good for me to be picky.

Y'know... I'm always up and down with AVATAR. No doubt, it LOOKS fantastic on blu-ray and I was lucky enough to watch it in 3D, opening day at IMAX Waterloo and that was a great experience but no way did it live up to it's hype. Truth is, for Snake-Eyes, James Cameron hasn't made a GREAT film since the criminally underrated a$$-kicker that was TRUE LIES.

Watched the other night and I noticed many more misgivings which were generally just cheesy nonsense. However, I thought the entertainment value redeemed all of it. It looks fantastic in blu ray- maybe its just me but even when watching 2D the scenery did feel like it had depth to it. I cant really add anything other than I loved the sound design again- Im really hoping for special things in Avatar 2 whenever it starts.
Plus mum and dad were literally raving at the end of the film- ive never seen that reaction from them after a film so clearly it entertained them.
I watched the extended cut and didnt notice many differences- only the scene at the bar at the start which was really bad. Horrible even.

Its a better experience when watched on normal 2d blu ray rather than 3d.Still a feast for the eyes whatever version you watch however.

I'm ashamed to admit I've only watched this once on DVD since I've had it (and that was only the second time since I saw the film at the cinema (yes, in 3D)).

It must be time for a rewatch....

I have to say I saw Avatar for the 2nd time and while clearly a TV screen can't compete with IMAX 3D it's still an immense and epic piece of sci-fi.

I gave the IMAX version 5 stars simply because I'd never seen anything like it, the TV version still gets 4 stars it's bloody well made.

I think Avatar is the best thing Cameron has done since Terminator 2, it beats True Lies which I always found to be 60% great 40% mediocre, Titanic and even The Abyss.

Personally I think Avatar is a fantastic achievement and in terms of a sci-fi spectacle it shits on the Star Wars prequels as well.

Avatar was the first movie I ever saw in the new 3d and I was mesmerised by the spectacle of it. The subtleties that really made you feel inside the film. No other film's 3d has come close since IMO. I agree that the story is nothing groundbreaking but it does do it very well and looks amazing on the blu-ray. The main focus is definitely on looks rather than content though.

It is flawed. This is a favourite film thread however, so lets stick to the positives. I had a blast when I saw it in the cinema in both 2D and 3D.

Lang made that film.

Avatar is really great movie. I like this 3D film because of its animated characters and wonderful story. But compare to Titanic movie, it's not much good. Titanic is my most favorite movie.

Without a doubt - one of the most memorable baddies of recent years! If they make a sequel, his absence will be sorely missed (although I did read in an EMPIRE interview with Cameron that there may be the possibilty of having Lang's clone or clones come back! imagine Jake fighting a 100 agent Lang's a la Matrix Reloaded! Ha ha!)

The only thing that lets the film down in my eyes is the charisma vacuum that is Sam Worthington.why do people keep hiring this guy? Hes useless.

I agree that Stephen Lang is awesome. The film would be a LOT less enjoyable if it wasnt for him.

I like Sam Worthington. I don't think it's a lack of charisma (I find he has that 'everyman' charm about him) but rather acting talent. I'm not saying he's bad or anything, just not anything special.

Sam Worthington is crap. I still say the movie should have had Sigourney Weaver battling Stephen Lang. Totally baddass, no stupid accents.

Would have been much better with DiCaprio and Winslet as the leads.
