I have to say I agree. as a movie experince. it the best one Ive had it a long long while. the effects were almost as drawing dropping as seeing starwars for the first time.
as a mvie experince Id give it 10, as a film its self. its big and clunky/ its a 7
however its defitnaly a big screen movie. watching on you tv will not do it justice

Nicely put. Doesn't make it as a favourite, but looks nice and has some cracking action. A good, dramatic soundtrack would have made a difference.

I thoroughly agree. Typical James Cameron movie. Jaw-dropping special effects and thrilling battle sequences ruined by juvenile scriptwriting, clunking socio-political references, cardboard cut-out characters and love story sculpted with all of the finesse of a fat trucker giving himself a hand-job in the back of his rig.

I reviewed this elsewhere but briefly, I thought this was a big disappointment. The effects WERE fantastic, but nowhere near as revolutionary as claimed, how is almost perfecting [and I say almost perfecting, they're not quite there imo] techniques that have been around for ages revolutionary? The script, a patchwork throughout of other films, was shoddy and almost shocking in it's unoriginality. Everything else was ok I suppose, but hardly outstanding, and it all felt like a Star Wars prequel to me!

I'm with Tech on this. Personally I think Lucas should be re-educated in film by James Cameron. Whilst I do agree that the story isn't the most original, that there are elements of Dances with Wolves and even Bravheart in it's climax, there is a story there and it's got a bit of a sweep to it. I've said it before, I loved it, I thought it was a great experience and I look forward to seeing it again, in either 3-D or 2-D, I think it'll work either way. And besides, as mega budget blockbusters go, it's a hell of a lot better than Transformers 2:Revenge of the Turd.

I thought this too, compare to the dead eye look of Zemeckis's last few animated movies the Na'Vi looked brilliantly human in their emotions at times, the facial tics and imperfections were great

I think the prequels have their plus points, but not this, is anything they harmed the mythology of the SW universe more than help it, midiclorians, the jedi being inept buffoons for the most part, etc etc

No no no, the Star Wars prequels have a large number of elements marking them as BAD FILMS, Avatar may be just as CG filled, but its a good film. Just not a great or classic film. I wish the ideas this poster conjured up in my mind made it onto the screen:

The trouble with these sorts of films (Star Wars, LOTR, even Harry Potter) is that expectations are set so high that to even come close to a satisfying experience is an achievement. It's easy to love low-key films that you discover yourself, or think you have, but when you have a film marketed at you and review quotes popping up saying "This is Great!", etc. many people automatically want to dislike it.

If I didn't anything about Avatar or who made it and watched it as a random movie one night I reckon I would loved it a lot more.

The problem is that my idea of the movie is based on the idea of what sort of films Jim Cameron is likely to make - T2 was a long long time ago, the guy has probably changed as a person since then ( I have no reason to watch Titanic) - hence no good characters, no tight pacing, no memorable dialogue. Sure he can do amazing battles, but the likes of Ripley, Kyle Reese, Pvt Hudson are not going to be seen again. Its another world. All I'm left with is a decent adventure film, one that I am too old to appreciate 100%. I can see myself being amazed at Avatar - when I was 15.

Titanic has great characters, pacing, etc. It's still a better movie than Avatar in my opinion.

But I won't get into that.

James Cameron is a different filmmaker now than he was in the 80s, we should be grateful that he's not becoming a bad filmmaker.

There's a simple line Jake says during the montage in the middle that combined with the music gave me goosebumps.

"I'm getting stronger"

I also like it when Neytiri keeps calling him a "baby" when they first meet.

The more I think about it the more I like this film.

You've got to be kidding, dude?! That was the worst part of the whole thing. All I could keep thinking was "this is our Independence Day". It was just naff.

Edit: And Tech, there's a difference between dialogue you can remember and memorable dialogue. Avatar certainly doesn't contain the latter.

I haven't seen it yet. Is it good? I've had the chance to see it on multiple occasions this week but have opted not to at the last minute each time. I dunno if i can handle its running time. I hate sitting in the cinema!
