Leo as a viking? Seriously? He's a fantastic actor but even in Gangs of New York and The Departed I couldn't take him seriously as a man of action.
Considering the traditional viking image he's going to have to work hard to convince - unless the production are trying to show a softer side to the warriors too. That would be a different approach and could overcome any shortcomings Leo might have trying to portray a berserker.

Daniel Craig would be a perfect Viking. Hopefully, the film will be about the Vikings founding the city of Dublin in 988 with Westlife as extras.

Mel Gibson is a terrible director: his films are so one dimensional, unrealistic, over-violence and historically inaccuracy. Braveheart and the Passion are two of my most hated films and the last thing I want to see is Gibson butcher history once again. He'll possibly show the Vikings as noble warriors and make out the English to be pure evil, so deserve to be invaded, raided and raped.

Unless Leo decides to use a fake rather than growing his own.

Perhaps Leo can pull it off... but he had to grow a proper beard, bulk up a bit and most importantly, CHANGE HIS ACCENT
