So it seems that with this year heralds the death of the Block Buster syndrome. The widest nominated film, Brokeback Mountain, although highly praised and receiving good reviews, hardly fits into the pop corn fodder mould. King Kong has been rightfully ignored. It seems that Hollywood is moving back to traditional story telling with films that discuss important social and political issues. Hollywood is going back to it's roots if you will. In 2005 many CGI enhanced films, the kind that used to draw in massive crowds, stopped being appealing to audiences. The failure of films such as The fantastic Four or Stealth, to name just two, I believe show us that audiences are beginning to tire of the Block Buster formula. They are demanding movies that move us, that make us think and not just entertain us for a couple of hours. The Academy is recognising this trend. And if you ask me, is is about time too. A dissapointment for me is not seing Walk the Line receive a nod for best film. My hopes for Best Supporting Actress are with Rachel Weisz. Best Actor is going to be a hard fought battle, but my money is on Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Best Actress should be Reese Witherspoon if you listen to speculators. Best Animated feature film should go to Wallace and Grommit, hands down. Five weeks and counting, the speculation is already growing.....
