Dench did nothing new, Knightley (not a bad actress) gave a very bad performance. And no Maria Bello. Straight fight between Huffman and Witherspoon.

it just shows what are the real awards the oscars are far superior to the bafta's.... but this year is a very wide field with no real favorite for the big major awards. Its very open for best film and director. Good to see Munich get three of the big nominations, an excellent film that was shamefully overlooked by bafta.

The Bafta awards are so over hyped and again these oscar nominations shows that they don't mean a thing.

Luckily all the decent films have been nominated for best picture and the same with the other catergories. This year seems alot more exciting as all of the films were great and that's what's important. Knightley won't win though, we're looking at either Huffman or Witherspoon.

Pretty open contest this year, no real standout films though its a shame Crash, a frankly awful and insulting film can be nom but History of Violence gets nothing other than the suprise Hurt nom and screenplay. Also Judi Dench getting a nom is a hoot, considering she was just the same old Judi, I guess the yanks like that sort of thing.

I'm pretty much satisfied with all that. Having just seen - and been thoroughly impressed by - Munich, it was nice to see it finally recieve some recognition. So whether Spielberg or Ang Lee triumphs, I'll be happy. It's a pitty Mortensen wasn't nominated for Violence, but as I didn't expect it to get anything, it's nice to see it pop up a little bit. George Lucas must be gutted though - I bet he thought ROTS was a shoe-in for a visual effects nod. Mind you, Ian McDiarmid's make-up was pretty groovy!

You've got to be kidding me? Keira Knightley?!?!? What a laugh!

I'm surprised at Terrence Howard. But that's cool. And Michelle Williams? Long gone are the days of Dawson's Creek. Good for her.

So Wallace and Gromit gonna pick up another Oscar this year too?

i dont agree with kiera's nod, she wont win. i think capote has some good chances, especialy for hoffmen as best actor. but i think bb mountain will take the best picture and director awards.

I think it's safe to assume Keira Knightley is not going to win, but good on her for gettin a nomination. It's nice to see some younger nominees this year, Ledger, Phoenix, Witherspoon, Willams, perhaps the acadmey will recognise the new talent

Interestingly CGI has been completely snubbed in the Animated film category, with the mostly traditional animation of Howls Moving Castle, going up against the stop motion of Wallace & Grommit and The Corpse Bride.

OK, now I like Charlize Theron and she deserved her Oscar for Monster but what is she doing in this year's nominations?? How was it possible to see past the utter over-worthy tripe that was North Country to see the actual performance???
It's a definite two hander this year - Witherspoon is my preference, but Huffman may swing it!

Hugely surprised that Terrance Howard was nominated, considering the academy's usual preferances. also think that Walk the Line was cruelly rejected big time - perhaps because of how similar it is to Ray. - Rock on Wallace And Gromit Though!!!!!

Interesting that Batman Begins gets a nod for cinematography but the visual effects nominations are a joke. WOTW deserves it's place but a lot of the effects in Narnia and Kong were awful.

Glad to see Crash get a few nominations although I still think Brokeback Mountain will win. Spielberg should get best director.

Got to agree with Ian. What on Earth was the academy thinking when they nominated Narnia in place of Revenge of the Sith for visual effects? Narnia did very good work on Aslan, but some parts (eg. the frozen lake chase) were piss-poor. The ILM work in Star Wars wasn't perfect, mainly by being pushed too hard by Lucas, but with some stuff, such as the Coruscant vistas, it committed to film (/digital) some of the most beautiful images in cinema, IMHO.

Except Keira as BEST Actress. I wasn't surprised to see Kong and Narnia not in the big categories but against each other in the smaller prizes. If Narnia does get the gong for its slip-shod CGI then the whole Academy system needs to be torn down and started from scratch.

A great list, but they should have taken a risk and got Christopher Nolan in for his Batman direction. Better than Crash, in my view.

i'm glad to see munich getting the acolades it deserves and war of the worlds for visual effects. I'm very disappointed not see Crowe with a nomination instead of Terrence Howard but its good to see Giamatti getting a nod. William Hurt getting a nod i thought was ridiculous if anyone from AHOV deserved a nod it was Ed Harris. No real shocks really i dont think Crash deserves a Best Pic or Directin nominee a very very good film but its not oscar worthy in those 2 categories especially because Consatnt Gardner was overlooked. But i hope Munich or Brokeback all the way come on. P.S.Hoffman for best actor

So it seems that with this year heralds the death of the Block Buster syndrome. The widest nominated film, Brokeback Mountain, although highly praised and receiving good reviews, hardly fits into the pop corn fodder mould. King Kong has been rightfully ignored. It seems that Hollywood is moving back to traditional story telling with films that discuss important social and political issues. Hollywood is going back to it's roots if you will. In 2005 many CGI enhanced films, the kind that used to draw in massive crowds, stopped being appealing to audiences. The failure of films such as The fantastic Four or Stealth, to name just two, I believe show us that audiences are beginning to tire of the Block Buster formula. They are demanding movies that move us, that make us think and not just entertain us for a couple of hours. The Academy is recognising this trend. And if you ask me, is is about time too.
A dissapointment for me is not seing Walk the Line receive a nod for best film. My hopes for Best Supporting Actress are with Rachel Weisz. Best Actor is going to be a hard fought battle, but my money is on Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Best Actress should be Reese Witherspoon if you listen to speculators. Best Animated feature film should go to Wallace and Grommit, hands down.
Five weeks and counting, the speculation is already growing.....

How many of the people slagging off Keira Knightley's nomination have actually seen the film?

While I'm very happy to see Brokeback Mountain nominated eight times - hardly a surprise - and Pride & Prejudice four times, I am very disappointed that SW Episode III only got 1 nomination! Narnia was great, but its CGI was indeed mediocre at some points. You would almost think that films released more than 6 months ago tend to be "forgotten"...Ah well, SW got the People's Choice Awards and GL likes that better anyway!

interesting to see keira knightley get nominated, when i remember in empire's interview with her in the october issue (i think), they mentioned the possibility of recognition come oscar time to which she replied "don't be rediculous!"

how the HELL narnia got the visual effects nomination i don't know. the effets in star wars and harry potter were far superior.

compare narnia to the other films nominated, king kong and war of the worlds. when u watched those u didn't even think about the effects, you just believed kong was there, or the tripods were there (okay the stampeed in kk wasn't perfect but kong himself was such an achievement u can forgive them). in narnia, when i saw aslan, i thought, "that's great cgi", but i didn't believe he was actually there.

Well, I, for one, am pretty pleased with the nominees this year. Granted, most of them were shoe-ins given the films that were inevitable contenders but it's still nice to have the odd curve-ball in there to keep us all awake into the early hours on the night. It's got a lot of attention, but I really do hope that one of the lads from Brokeback wins. They've got tough competition but they deserve some recognition of their subtle, convincing and underplayed performances with difficult material. They've missed out so far this award season. Feel free to disagree!

I can't believe King Kong didn't get a nod in best picture category. Instead an average and well concieved picture such as Crash gets nominated because its an "issues" movie. This point also covers Munich which is also another "worthy movie", whilst undoubtably it is stlyishly shot and has mannered good performances, and good set pieces,it is however an average film with obvious points and references about terrorism,  which has never ending monologues delivered in a solemn tone repeating points already stated!! Plus Its 30mins too long, Speilberg needed a more lean edit on this one.
Also no Naomi Watts in the best actress category!! -instead we get more bloody Judi Dench nomintations for an average film and average performance, all Judi has to is to turn up on a film set to gather a whole host of nominations !!
Also I saw Syriana in the States and how on earth the Editor didn't get a nod is unbelievable as the story and characters in it asre very complex.
