This will be the first Cameron movie ever - including Piranha 2 - that I've got no intention of watching. Particularly worrying is the reheating of the A L I E N S ideas of Vietnam-entanglement metaphors, Marines, powersuits and corporate suits all convinced of their invincibility (be that firepower or legally based) when facing-off with a more primitive adversary. That it seems derivative is a little sad. That it's obviously derivative of Cameron's own previous work is more worrisome. With others I've commented on the EMPIRE news threads of the apparent underwhelmingness of this film, but I don't know what the Big E's editorial team are doing bigging this up. That said, maybe we're in for a World's First: a series of deliberately bad trailers for a truly awesome film. Oooh, what are the odds...?

What is everyone's problem? AVATAR looks amazing! I cant see what the issue is with the story, re-telling the ago old story of one civilization taking over another, sounds like an excellent setting for a sci-fi action film. So far the footage looks incredible and far better than anyone could have expected.

Why are people on this forum so eager to dislike this film? This forum seems to be filled with pretentious cunts! Get a fucking life.

Still don't get what all the fuss is about. If indeed it looks "awesome" then it looks "awesome" in the same way that the Transformers 2 trailers looked "awesome".

But hang on...Slugman, sir. With your eloquent phraseology and compelling arguments in favour of the film, branding folks unimpressed by the trailers as cunts and pointing out our lack of fucking lives, I have now seen the light. I'm off to preorder my ticket for the flick, a copy of the video game, and a big bag of Avatar action figures. Thank you.

Ah yes of course because we should just be grateful that somebody is doing something different, never mind if it looks shite too.

A director dealing with themes they've already dealt with isn't derivative, it's a mark of their style.

To be pedantic, it wasn't Hugh Jackman who said that, it was Wolverine.

I dearly detest all this moronic chatter about Ferngully and other poor comparisons.

Even if you don't like the look of this, to try and throw them in with mediocre animated movies and video games is just to far.
You could, just say

'I don't like the look of it.'

and we'd all think nothing of it, you are entitled to your opinion. The fact of the matter is, that you are all so insecure in your view, (and you should be insecure, you haven't even seen the movie yet), that you must all repeat the tried and tested criticism expressed by every other fool on here.

I'm going in with an open mind, and a hope that it rocks my world. Theres no point going in expecting, or as it seems, hoping that it will fail. In fact, seeing it, whether that be on the net, or on the big screen, will be a futile exercise for you haters, because regardless of whether your opinion is changed by the film, you couldn't dare say that, you'll just lie and say that you suspisions were confirmed and it was
'THE WORST FILM EVER'.

I am still waiting for the trailers to put in the good stuff which is supposed to draw in the viewer. At the moment it looks like an incredibly shallow film which resembles the cut scene of a game. I always thought trailers were supposed to be the shiny lure which draws us to the cinema rather than something to make us consider the film to be missable.

No, a trailer is a collection of snippets from a film, which gives you a brief flavour of what you can expect, and you decide whether you like what you see. The trailer doesn't fail if some of the population aren't enticed, they fail when they don't represent the film very well, and as nobody has seen this movie yet, they can't judge if the trailer accurately portrays it.

If the movie does suck, then we, those who think the trailer rules, will be able to say that the trailer didn't represent the film well. The only way you haters can say the trailer failed, is if the movie is brilliant.

See I knew somebody was gonna say that.  I will say, without Hugh Jackman, Wolverine wouldn't have said anything.

Nicely judgemental there.

The thing is this is "supposed" to be a discussion forum and simply saying "I don't like the look of it" doesn't really qualify why anybody feels that way.  The fact that a lot of people are saying "This look bad because at the moment it resembles cut scenes froma  video game" does explain why they feel that way.

Nobody's saying it's gonna be the worst film ever.  (Really?  Worse than White Chicks?)  but it's not looking to be the spectacle we were promised.  If Cameron's principal faith now lies in CGI that's no better than what we had a decade ago, then he hneeds to give himself a shake.

It IS supposed to be a discussion forum, so, ok, I'll agree that it wouldn't be enough to state you discontent and not explain it, but the fact that exactly the same criticisms that were banded around a few months ago are being resurrected and spewed out again, seems unoriginal.

At least some body here gave a new fear (not really a criticism, but nearly), which I happen to agree with, and that is whether Worthington can hold onto his accent throughout the film.

Some people will, inevitably call it the worst film ever, you know fanboys (or in the case hateboys?).

You may feel I'm just as bad, and assuming it will be good, just as you seem to assume it will be bad, but the fact is that I only hope it will be good, and as I've seen nothing to the contrary, my hope has not been shaken.

so you are saying that in fact the purpose of a trailer is not marketing and to get people paying to see the film at the cinema? I am not critiquing the film because as you say it is too early to say but rather the trailers which are really not selling it to a large proportion of people (if the chatter is correct) of course I realise a lot of those people will see it but the marketing really doesn't seem to be selling it well.

The new action science fiction film by James Cameron? It opens December 18th? Nahh, I'm going to skip it because the trailers don't look quite right on my tiny computer screen.

As long as this film is better than True Lies and Titanic, I'll see it. True Lies should have been renamed Truely Awful. Weta's effects look pretty awesome, very much like a fantasy painting brought to life.

Unoriginal maybe.  But since that's the only criticism most people can legitimately fire at it, having not seen the finished product, it's to be expected really.

I think the main problem really is hype.  The way it was talked about a lot of people, myself included were expecting to see something beyond the norms.  And what we've seen so far doesn;t suggest that to me.

The problem is, even really well done computer generated effects will pale in compaison to practical.

Well, personally speaking, I'm afraid I'm not remotely blown away.

The CG doesn't even look photo-realistic on Youtube, so it's hardly going to be convincing on the big screen.

It's impressive in its scope, but it still looks fake. In five years time, we'll look back on this in the same way as the 'photo-realistic' Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within.

After the seamless CG integration seen in District 9, for a fraction of the cost, Avatar looks like a great leap backward.

Some shots DO look photoreal, IMO, including this one:

OK that did look better but I'm still worried about the story line which is, let's face it, shite.
