Oh, this is going to cause so many problems...

An epic movie about Islam's Prophet Muhammad is in the pipeline, backed by a producer of the Lord of the Rings.

American Barrie Osborne, who also produced The Matrix, told Reuters the film would be an "international epic" aimed at "bridging cultures".

In accordance with Islamic rules, the Prophet cannot be depicted on screen. Images of the Prophet are considered blasphemous by Muslims.

The $150m (£91m) English language film should go into production in 2011.

2010 talksQatari media company Alnoor Holdings, which is behind the plans, said it wanted to attract the "best international talent" for the film. "The film will educate people about the true meaning of Islam," Osborne said.

Raja Sharif, vice president of international projects at Alnoor, told Reuters he expected to conclude deals next year.

If they got so bent out of shape over some cartoons then this is going to make peoples heads explode, why bother?

3D moving images are not films, they're holograms, and should be treated as a separate medium of storytelling, or artform.

$150m and they won't be able to show the lead? Very risky if ya ask me.

This will cause more uproar than when Stallone took his helmet off in Judge Dredd.

It is interesting that a Middle Eastern production company is aiding the project. I wonder what their plan is to counter the mass of outrage that will no doubt come about from this?

Who is going to be outraged by this movie? I don't get it.

I thought only images of The Prophet offended Muslims. Surely then a creative script could educate people on Islam without offending the Muslim commnunity. (I reckon it'll bomb though. I find it difficult to picture Middle America queuing round the block to see a movie about the figurehead of Islam.)

They are not showing his image I thought.
I asked because I lived in the middle east when I was young and I remember the original film "the Message" was an enourmous hit there. They used to show it on TV the whole time.

Surely a movie about Mohammed and the journey he went through would be welcomed there, especially in a time where there is so much misinformation about the religion.

I do agree the Taliban will hate it and probabaly Al Qaeda as well but then they hate everything.

The Message showed the birth of Islam from the point of view of people around him and then viewing through the camera as Muhammad's 'eyes' when he was essential to a scene. I'm sure they could do that again.

This movie might not cause that much outrage, as long as they deal with the content carefully.
By the name of the movie there may be several Muslims who may be outraged and get the wrong idea that the movie will actually show the Prophet, however they don't show him then I don't know how this is gonna work.

Maybe in the States but it could do very well in Middle Eastern countries, like Kingdom of Heaven did. Of course if done well. Speaking of which I must see The Message, it looks fascinating to say the least.

In case you are wondering, this the the Prophet Muhammed film of 1976.

"The film will educate people about the true meaning of Islam," Is he fucking retarded? I hope this film gets canned. The only thing epic about this film will be when the creators get slaughtered for trying to define Islam in the worst possible way.

Wow, this is going to cause so many problems I agree Timon, just a touchy subject to begin with all around. The Muslim community are highly sensitive about even an image of the Prophet Mohammad, or a story, or a cartoon (ahem) or ANYTHING!
