'A Princes Of Mars' springs to mind, first of the '( John Carter) Of Mars books': Human dude transported to alien world, gives alien dudes the motivation to rebel. Most creatures are direct analogues of earth creatures but a different colour and extra legs. Written by the dude that wrote Tarzan.

For maximum enjoyment of Avatar DON'T read this book, or the seven above...and don't watch Aliens, dances with wolves, and definitely definitely don't watch Delgo.

Starship Troopers? I read that Cameron made the cast of Aliens read the book. And if there are space marines in Avatar chances are they'll be something like the Mobile Infantry.
BTW- Dune is one of the best books I've ever read.

What about Old Man's War by John Scalzi? The fact that Cameron has ripped off the cloned body and mind transfer part of this book I should say so, its ok though as the clones in the book had green skin not blue so Cameron can't be sued :-/

Ah my faith in you guys has been restored! A good selection here, Grass is an exceptional novel and the whole Forever trilogy would come highly recommended by me, In addition Mockingbird and Roadside Picnic are definate must reads, the highlights of the Sci-Fi Masterworks series that I've read so far.
Good list Empire!

I've only read one of those so will check out the rest. Also worth mentioning is Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. It deals a lot with the transfer of minds into other bodies. Geat detective noir as well. Good skills Empire

 I have to admit, being a big sci fi fan i have never read any of these. But will certainly check them out! The only one i really know about from all seven of them is Dune. Looks like i got some major reading and catching up to do.

Anne McCaffery's Dragon's of pern would be good to read to for the impression's. But the Ship Who Sang is a beautiful read.

My favorite is Lois McMaster Bujold, and yes once you start reading Miles you cannot stop, in fact must reread again, for a little guy he is one hell of a character and he gets into all sorts of trouble.

And yes Richard Morgan.

 Interstellar Patrol by Christopher Anvil (parts 1 & 2)

Years after first reading it, i'm still amused, delighted and awed by the book when i sit down to read. A great read for those who appreciate the victors using by wit and intelligence instead of the superior military force. Pure Genius.

I am a bookworm and science fiction and fantasy geek. My two favorite books are Dune and The Ship Who Sang. I read both of these books in high school. Brillant list!

 Deathworld is a great Sci fi novel set on a planet where all the fauna and flora has one design and that is to destroy outsiders some similarities to avatar i feel

Believe it or not, I've somehow managed to not see Avatar yet LOL. However soon as I heard about it, it made me think of the Clifford D Simak short story 'Dessertion', which is about how humans try and explore Jupiter by putting human minds in Jovian bodies, but the volunteers don't come back... Sounds similar to 'Call Me Joe' which I haven't read, but was written quite a bit earlier, in 1944. I have it in a collection called 'Beyond Tomorrow' edited by Damon Knight (also includes 'Nightfall' by Isaac Asimov, so well worth looking for!). It also appears as one of the tales in Simak's 'City', but I think it's more haunting as a stand-alone without the continuing wider story.

Anyway, good list! Anyone who knows Tepper gets my vote. Also read everything by AM, though you are right she does tend to not know when to stop churning them out!
