ORIGINAL: Deviation Sans Soliel- 1/10. I understood cimpltetely, it was so simple, I have no idea what you guys are talking about, this film is easier to understand than Tarkovsky's Mirro...............oh ok who am I kidding here.........true opinion here, 9/10. Ok, so from what I understood, was Marker playing with film theory here? There seems to be many allusions to time and space and the way some images are united to the other implies, creating an idea out of two contrasting or similar images edited together, sometimes also helped by the narration. Also, it seemed quite post-modernist in philosophy, with the focus on images and how they drive the world, and everything is changing, transitional (the scenes in Okinawa in particular, the jumping from Africa to Japan) but yet in some ways some of the images or symbols seen in this film will be remembered and also focusing on the importance of memory/ history/culture in the creation of our identity. This single instances have a life for themselves. Now this is a gross simplification of the film and I currently feel like calling the Corpus Hypercobulus by Dali just colours put together but I am trying to show what I grasped from first viewing. I could be wrong though. This might be one of the greatest films I've ever, one of those few truly great, it's not one I truly love (not becuase I didn't enjoy it, the opposite) but one I respect a lot and really works. I love you Devi! You didn't love me when I posted a great review of Sans Soleil in the Top 100 Films I've Watched thread.
