To be honest I separated my viewing in four sittings. You don't have to watch it in one watch. Plus the film is separated into six parts. Jesus I love the film but not even Isaw it in one watch, each watch never lasting more than 90 minutes.

Even at that Dev, I've got so many other things on that I wouldn't get to watch all of the films in time doing that. I still end up splitting most of them over two nights at least.

Perhaps if there are longer films the permanent council members could take an executive decision to extend the length of the voting rounds? That seems fairer than introducing some kind of restriction on what some can nominate.

No problem with that Elab, but considering there is a shorter version of F&A I went with that one. The longer version might be a more artistic experience but I'm not convinced that an extra three hours of a film is really going to change my opinion on it.

I'd agree with that. Although that in mind, I'd still say if there's a longer and shorter cut of the film and it's easier for someone to watch the shorter then to just go with that. Unless the shorter cut butchers the film.

That's fair. I know that came up in an earlier round, too, but blessed if I can remember which one. Might it have been OUATIA? Does that have multiple cuts?

There's a two hour cut. I've never seen it myself but it's supposed to be near impossible to watch because the cuts remove so much that nothing seems logical. That's one of the cases where I would argue people should watch the longer cut.

Did it mess with your head in an 'OMG this is a mental orgasm!' way, or was it genuinely indecipherable? I don't want to say that you make an exception and watch it again, but I don't think one viewing is sufficient to absorb it. It's rare to find a film that demands so much from the audience - even among Marker's other films - especially since there isn't one single overarching message connecting the whole film together, but there must have been some parts you liked surely?

True. I'm blithely assuming they meant it in a pejorative sense, which is hypocritical of me since I didn't really have a fucking clue what was going on when I first watched it. I really hope that they don't dislike it on the basis of not understanding it, because I don't think the two should be related in any way.

Shameful. I got av nostalgia and changed back. Technically my first one was the Sanjuro gif, but that hurt chrisscott's eyes. Plus Irene is far nicer to look at.

TWMNS, shall we bless this thread with two posts dedicated to beautiful french actresses? This will be the first.

Yep. I think the whole thing still should be 3 months, but the first month, where we see all the films, should be longer than the other two. I mean, I know we never finish on time, but what's the point of the two last rounds being so long, really?

I didn't say I didn't like it. There was quite a bit about it that I did like, but for me there was just too much that didn't make sense and ended up giving me a totally confused look by the end of it. Certainly something that I'm glad I've seen, but I won't be putting it on my wishlist with Amazon.

I find the lack of discussion of Scorsese's underrated masterpiece disturbing.

I have to see it first. I'm very excited about it, as I'm a major Scorsese fan (unlike elab, who can't spell his name correctly).

I only had vague memories of Last Night, so I refreshed myself on that, and I'm glad I did.

I love the concept, I love that clash of poignant longing, almost nostalgic, with the steady encroaching feeling of dread and the acting sells it nicely. Really good.

Then I watched Grave of the Fireflies. Now, I've never been a fan of anime, and I think it's because I've never found the film that's got me "into" it. This may well be that film however. Just terrific. I also knew from hearing people talk about it, to expect a sad ending, but blimey...just devastating .

Excellent!
My DVDs finally arrived today, so I'll add my thoughts once my watching is underway.

That's on the To Do list for this weekend. It's a fairly long list!

3 down, 9 to go.

Can't find Audition anywhere so I might need to rent, which is annoying. And it seems I've been sent the current version of Fanny and Alexandra. Question is, do I ruin my weekend by getting through it now?

Evil man.  I've watched Last Night, Grave of the Fireflies and Distant Voices, Still Lives.

I was probably going to do Out of the Blue on Saturday, because 'im indoors would quite like to see it this time. And I'll probably rewatch Rififi as well, even though I've seen to an awful lot!

Audition is on YouTube (if things get to desperate). I'd only recommend it as a last resort, though.

Does anyone have a legal link to Sans Soleil (with English subs)? I can't afford to buy all the ones not available on YouTube that I haven't seen and I'm not signed up to any rental services.

Legal? Youtube is illegal as well strictly speaking. I can tell you where to download films, PM me.

By "legal", I just meant the ones that I can ask for directly on here. I'm making quite a few errors in phrasing today.

I know of a couple of websites where I can download. Thanks for the offer, though.
