Christ I could be here all day with this one, so I've pared it down to films that STILL make me cry and probably will every time.
  • Anything well made with a dog as a star. Lassie, K9, Turner & Hooch... Haven't seen Marley & Me yet but I've been warned and it's on the cards.
  • Most of the Disneys really. Agree with the majority here though, the opening sequence of Up is a stand-out for so many reasons.
  • Something about baseball movies; Field of Dreams, A League of Their Own, The Natural...
  • Horse racing too, very emotional; Champions, Seabiscuit, The Black Stallion...
  • Schindler's List - at the end where Schindler breaks down and the ring in the snow. Neeson at his best.
  • The Green Mile - execution of John Coffey. Gut-wrenching.
  • Saving Private Ryan - Present-day Ryan at the graveyard asking his family if he's been a good man...
  • The Sixth Sense - Dance speech in the car. Toni Collette is massively underrated.
  • The Time Traveler's Wife - the clinch at the end has added poignancy and the entire film is wonderfully shot.
  • It's a Wonderful Life. Oh come on now surely...

Must be my advancing years I suppose getting me all soft. I even had a bit of a lip tremble when Dobby carked it recently.

I'd look out too for the forthcoming movie adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh's stage musical Les Miserables. I was at the 25th birthday anniversary show at the Queens Theatre and I have never experienced such overpowering emotion for a piece of entertainment.

When I last posted on this thread I forgot about It's a Wonderful Life. Saw it again at the Warwick Arts Centre last xmas and took my wife who had never seen it before. A bit embarrassing when I started crying in the first five minutes (when George gets hit around the head by the pharmacist) only to feel relieved when I initially noticed my wife also sobbing next to me, and then realising that quite a few fellow audience members had gone too. When the lights came up at the end, I swear most of the crowd had tissues and hankies out!

Also, I'm firmly a believer that a hardened heart softens with age as I also welled up for Dobby's passing - and I can't abide the Potter franchise...

Surprisingly ... because although the film was good, I didn't find it that emotionally engaging ... I had tears pouring down my face this afternoon at the final moments of The Way Back. And I almost never cry in films!

  • The first and second I totally agree on (especially Champions), but not so much The Black Stallion.

The Black Stallion Returns, however, [SPOILER!] where Alex lets The Black go at the end[/SPOILER] I would say yes to. Stunning music in that film, too.

The movie that really made me cry and forget time and place, was (and still is) Life Is Beautiful from 1997 with Roberto Benigni as Guido.

That movie is a brilliant masterpiece and a tribute to joyfulness

The Lion King always chokes me, its that Mufasa bit, you know what i mean. Disney films in general normally have a moment where i wobble, theyre generally fantastic,
Schindler's List is another, as is The Passion of The Christ, Oh, and I'm ashamed to say Armageddon made me teary too,,,
My Neighbour Totoro nearly made me cry, although that was more with joy than anything - that little girl is ridiculously cute,

My weepy used to be the ending of The Snowman (not a film as such I know) but I was very little back then.

Nowadays the ending of The Sixth Sense gets me when he tells his mother his secret in the car. Most recently, I found My Sisters Keeper a tearjerker.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is the last film I remember that made me shed a tear or two... The scene where they are in the house as it collapses all around them.

    Brilliant film.

Finding Nemo almost does it every time he says "Love ya dad" at the end.  Also, not a film, but the end of Band of Brothers gets me.

Saving Private Ryan.  That had me in tears the first time, and almost every other time I watch it.

Harold and Maude-only watched it first less than a week ago but have rewatched a few times. Every time I see Harold's face when he finds out about the tablets from Maude, you can see the thing registering in his mind and then pure shock, with his outburst "WHAT!" just startling me in my seat and then we see the lights and the sirens going in the next moment...and then we are emotionally with harold just trying to deny the inevitable. Every. single. time. it gets me right in the chest.

Then there is that scene with him ushering Maude in the hospital and pleading with the doctors, cut between the doctor coming down the corridor, Harold driving recklessly in his hearse under pale skies and seeing Harold moving restlessly around the waiting room. All under the song "Trouble" by cat stevens. We all know what is going to happen but we can't believe it after the magic spell of the last hour where the duo managed to escape everything that fate threw at them. Even that last shot can't console me though...not yet - that last sequence is just too upsetting yet for me...

It took a few viewings for me to even acknowledge how well that sequence is done and how much wes anderson and indie film owes to Hal ashby and bud cort (just look at the way Harold stands and sits in the waiting room and the way he holds his head out the window in the hearse in those scenes, it's amazing how even the look, dress, dialogue and spirit of that character resembles some of the characters I have seen in later films though I never realised it until now.)

Really, I don't cry easily at movies or at all but that film...I have a lump in my throat just thinking about that last bit.

The first 10 minutes of Up, the first 20 of Finding Nemo, the first 30 minutes of Wall E.....

Hang on. I suspect their may be a pattern here...

Last movie I remember having a little weep at was Senna, but for very obvious reasons, being a huge Formula One fan, the dramatic events of that weekend and the signs of 'that' coming up make my skin shiver.

Before that probably something like Amores Perros.

Pixar are really good at plucking hearstrings -
    Up (growing old)
Nemo (the first 10 minuntes and fade into Thomas Newman's incredible score - anything that man soundtracks adds a whole new emotional dimension)
WallE (define dancing - Newman again!)
    ToyStory 3 (the ending)
Greenmile (the end of course but also when John heals the governor's wife)
Shawshank (Brookes was here  - Newman AGAIN! - I am not a stalker honest)
Crash (the bullet proof cape bit turns me into a blubbering mess)
Forrest Gump (you were there Jenny)
ROTK (you bow to no one)
A few more might come to mind later.

I watched The Elephant Man the other day and it had me sobbing like a child. Luckily I was alone and my partner had not returned from work or I imagine the stick I would have received for that would be endless.

    What a heartbreaking film.
