For such a great mag, I remain very surprised that Empire's Blu Ray section is so poor.

The review of Gladiator awarded 5 stars for the movie and extras but made no mention of the well documented (online at least) picture problems,

Reading a Blu Ray review, especially of a catalogue title, I want to know if it's worth the money to upgrade from the DVD version. The general consensus for this title is 'no'.

I'd like to see Picture and Sound quality reviewed and starred, rather than the film and extras - especially as the film has been reviewed for cinema and DVD release in Empire already.

There are also many titles available in other countries that aren't out over here yet (eg Michael Mann's 'Ali' in France) - are these worth the cost of importing?

I don't think blu ray is a niche market any longer and as the best-ever home viewing experience, it's about time it got the coverage it deserved!

I agree, separate stars for picture and sound are a must, Speed Racer's review made comment on the picture and sound, but it was a fair few paragraphs into the review.

Why do you feel that it is Empire's duty to deliver such info to you?

Empire is a magazine that is primarily concerned with new and upcoming movies. They are not a dedicated DVD/BR review magazine. There are such magazines out there if you want to buy them and there is also the internet where you can find out all of the info you need for free.

What's the point of them having a Blu Ray section if they're not going to comment on the quality a Blu Ray brings, Wilbert?

You can't expect a magazine that is primarily concerned with current and future cinema releases to be as in-depth with their Blu-Ray coverage as a magazine dedicated to such things. They do comment on the quality of Blu-Ray but not to the depth the original poster would like. It's unreasonable to want that level of analysis in a magazine like Empire.

I would like to see them show how much cheaper you can get it on DVD now that they are being reduced in price. I love Blu-rays.

I dont think there will ever be a large blu-ray section. Should blu-ray show that its here for the long run I imagine Empire will simply hold one review for both blu-ray and DVD. I echo Wilbert's comments; if I want in depth tech specs I will read DVD review, or have a look on dvdbeaver.

You're right Wilbert, the magazine is primarily new film based and the Bluray section is a bit of a bonus but that level of sarcasm really isn't justified.

I certainly wouldn't want any additional star ratings in the reviews.  Where there is significant picture/sound quality - whether it's great or it's sub-par - then they should comment on it in the review body, and I've noticed on a few occassions they do (I've not read the reviews too intently as I don't have a BD player).  Wilbert's right, though (however sarkily he made his point ), detailed tech specs are best left to the dedicated mags.

It was just a sarcastic joke, really, Vader. Still, though, you've obviously never made any sarcastic comments on these boards ever, right? Because if you have, then calling me out on my sarcasm would be hypocritical, wouldn't it?

I like the idea of seperate star ratings for individual aspects (e.g: Sound and picture) but i personally can't see the difference between playing my DVDs on my PS3 (upscaler) and the Blue-ray versions. And no, i don't need to go to specsavers!

I agree. Wilbert, you're not being as sarcastic as I know you can be. *shakes head in disappointment*

Must do better. See me.

You're correct, they have no duty.

However, since they do review Blu Rays already, there's little point in reviewing them if they aren't going to mention the picture and sound. Since this is the only reason buy them over dvds it seems a pretty obvious thing to leave out, duty bound or not.

Why bother revieing re-releases on Blu Ray if they only talk about the film? It's currently a waste of magazine that could be improved, and since this section of the forum is about the magazine itself, I think it's a valid question.

They dont necessarily have to give ratings for picture and sound, just be accurate hen reviewing the discs.Their review of Highlander on blu ray rated the picture quality as ''immaculate'' yet iv read elsewhere that there are definetly problems with the transfer.
