We all know that certain songs sound happy but are actually about something else entirely

The Police "Every Breath You Take" for example and "There she Goes" by The La's but anyone else know of any?

Recently I came to the conclusion that "Not so manic now" by Dubstar is actually about home invasion and rape

The wind's whistling
My mind's twisting
I was making myself the usual cup of tea
When the doorbell strangely rang

I staggered shaking slowly to the door
Through the frosted panel I could see you
Your intentions as a salesman truly cush
You endeavoured as a psycho just to push
And whilst lifting and throwing to the wall
My puny structure of an ageing OAP
No reason why you chose my flat
Breathing deeply in a trance

Sick thing is I used to like listening to this on the pub jukebox back in 98, my ex got raped a few years back and now I shed a tear when I hear this song its possibly the most depressing track I have.

I always thought this was quite menacing from Bacharach

Hey! Little girl
[color=#000000 size=2]Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...

Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

Pretty much saying 'bitch you better look good and have my food ready 'else am gonna nail one of those fine women at work.....and you better believe its time to get ready for love whether you wants to or not!'

Despite my best advice, a friend and his fiancée insisted on using REM's The One I Love as their wedding song.  Cue much loud singing along during the first dance...

This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
A simple prop to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love

Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now)
Fire (she's comin' down on her own, now)

This one goes out to the one I love
This one goes out to the one I've left behind
Another prop has occupied my time
This one goes out to the one I love

Venke Knutson's Holiday sounds rather jolly if you aren't paying attention to the lyrics.

Always considered My Sharona by The Knack an innocent pop song until someone pointed out the dodgy lyrics:-

Ooh my little pretty one, pretty one.
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh you make my motor run, my motor run.
Gun it comin' off the line Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

Come a little closer huh, ah will ya huh.
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona.
Keeping it a mystery gets to me
Running down the length of my thighs, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up. Such a dirty mind.
Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

When you gonna give it to me, give it to me.
It is just a matter of time Sharona
Is it just destiny, destiny?
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

Run For Your Life by the Beatles.  About as far from I Want To Hold Your Hand as you could get.

Well I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Well you know that I'm a wicked guy
And I was born with a jealous mind
And I can't spend my whole life
Trying just to make you toe the line

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end'a little girl

I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or you won't know where I am

You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand little girl
Catch you with another man

Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na
Na, na, na

'Coward of the County' by Kenny Rogers:  a gang rape and its violent (possibly murderous) reprisals.

Allegedly, 'The Love Cats' by The Cure is about drowning unwanted kittens.

Yep, its about anti-depressants. Its also an awful song.

I Gotcha by Joe Tex scares the crap out of me.
I gotcha, uh-huh, huh
You thought I didn't see ya now
Didn't ya, uh-huh, huh
You tried to sneak by me now
Didn't ya, ha, ha, uh-huh, huh
Now gimme what you promised me
Give it here
Come on

Hey
Good God
Hey
Hey

You promised me the day
That you quit your boyfriend
I'd be the next one to ease on in
You promised me it would be just us two, yeah
I'd be the only man kissin' on you, yeah
Now, kiss me
Hold it a long time, hold it
Don't turn it a-loose, now hold it
A little bit longer, now hold it
Come on
Hold it
Hold it
Hold it
Hold it
Now ease up on me now
Hey

Good God Hey
The girl's alright, y'all
Ha-ha
Good God

You made me a promise
And you're gonna stick to it
You shouldn't have promised
If you weren't gonna do it
You saw me and ran in another direction
I'll teach you to play with my affection
Now, give it here
You never should've promised to me
Give it here
Don't hold back, now
Give it here
Don't say nothin', just give it here
Come on, give it here, uh
Give it here, uh
Give it here
Give it here
Give it to me, now

Good God
Hey

I gotcha
Shouldn't made a promise to me
I gotcha
You never should've promised to me, gotcha
Give it on, here
I gotcha
You thought you got away from me, didn't ya
But girl, I gotcha
Ha-ha-ha
Oh, I gotcha
Give it on up, I gotcha
Give it on here, I gotcha
You tried to sneak by me, now didn't ya
Ha-ha
I gotcha
Oh, I gotcha

The late 50's and 60's had a string of songs about 'girls' which with a closer listen are pretty disturbing! I used to work in a diner-esque restaurant and would be absently humming along to this until I went no wait a minute...

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap - 'Young Girl'

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl,
You're much too young, girl
With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth, Oh,
Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it is wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes, Oh,
So hurry home to your mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far, Oh,
Young girl

Tears For Fears - Mad World isn't a bundle of laughs.

All around me are familiar faces,
Worn out places, worn out faces,
Bright and early for their daily races,
Going nowhere, going nowhere.
Their tears are filling up their glasses,
No expression, no expression.
Hide my head; I want to drown my sorrow;
No tomorrow, no tomorrow.

And I find it kind of funny,
I find it kind of sad;
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had.
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take;
When people run in circles,
It's a very, very mad world,
Mad world.

Children waiting for the day they feel good,
"Happy Birthday, happy Birthday,"
Made to feel the way that every child should,
"Sit and listen, sit and listen."
Went to school and I was very nervous;
No one knew me, no one knew me.
"Hello, teacher, tell me, what's my lesson?"
Look right through me, look right through me.

And I find it kind of funny,
I find it kind of sad;
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had.
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take;
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world,
Mad world,
Enlargen your world,
Mad world.

Tom Jones - Delilah I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window
I saw the flickering shadows of love on her blind
She was my woman
As she deceived me I watched and went out of my mind
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
I could see that girl was no good for me
But I was lost like a slave that no man could free
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting
I cross the street to her house and she opened the door
She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my delilah
Why, why, why delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more

[insert trumpet solo here]

She stood there laughing
I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more
My, my, my, delilah
Why, why, why, delilah
So before they come to break down the door
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more
Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more

Working on the Highway by Bruce Springsteen sounds realy upbeat and happy until you realise his in prison for at best transporting a minor across state lines at worse his a pedophile.

Friday night's pay night guys fresh out of work
talking about the weekend, scrubbing off the dirt
Some heading home to their families, some looking to get hurt
Some going down to Stovell wearing trouble on their shirts

I work for the county out on 95
All day I hold a red flag and watch the traffic pass me by
In my head I keep a picture of a pretty little miss
Someday Mister I'm gonna lead a better life than this

Working on the highway laying down the blacktop
Working on the highway all day long I don't stop
Working on the highway blasting through the bedrock
Working on the highway
Working on the highway

I met her at a dance down at the union hall
She was standing with her brothers, back up against the wall
Sometimes we'd go walking down the union tracks
One day I looked straight at her and she looked straight back

So I'm working on the highway laying down the blacktop
Working on the highway all day long I don't stop
Working on the highway blasting through the bedrock
Working on the highway
Working on the highway

I saved up my money and I put it all away
I went to see her daddy but we didn't have much to say
"Son, can't you see that she's just a little girl she don't know nothing about this cruel, cruel world"

We lit out down to Florida, we got along all right
One day her brothers came and got her and they took me in a black and white
The prosecutor kept the promise that he made on that day
And the judge got mad and he put me straight away
I wake up every morning to the work bell clang
Me and the warden go swinging on the Charlotte County road gang

I'm working on the highway laying down the blacktop
Working down the highway all day long I don't stop
Working on the highway blasting through the bedrock
Working on the highway
Working on the highway

Working on the highway laying down the blacktop
Working on the highway all day long I don't stop
Working on the highway blasting through the bedrock
Working on the highway
Working on the highway

see also - Happy Birthday Sweet 16 by Neil Sedaka

Tonight's the night I've waited for
Because you're not a baby anymore
You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

When you were only six I was your big brother
Then when you were ten We didn't like each other
When you were thirteen You were my funny valentine
But since you've grown up Your future is sewn up
From now on you're gonna be mine, so

If I should smile with sweet surprise
It's just that you've grown up before my very eyes
You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen
Happy birthday sweet sixteen

The guy in the song has been grooming this girl since she was 6 years old and now she is 16 so he's going to hit it.

bear in mind both Neil sedaka who wrote the music and the guy who wrote the words are both from New York who's age of consent is 17!!!!

my other submission would be "One Step Closer To Heaven" by S Club Juniors. A very catchy pop song that's actually about missing a dead loved one and looking forward to sying so as they can be re-united!!!

I've been waiting such a long time
Just tryin' to get through
And it's takin' all of my strength
To keep me here away from you

It doesn't matter just how long it takes
Nothing changes when we're apart
It's just a little bit longer,
We've come this far

Chorus:
One step closer to heaven baby
Means one step closer to you
They'll be no more living without you baby
I'm counting each minute
'Till I'm back to you
One step closer to heaven baby
Hold on, hold on
Hold on to my lovin'

I've been saving every little bit of my love for you
I've been dreaming just to get by
It so exciting, fantasing

It doesn't matter just how long it takes
Just to know we'll be back together
But this time it's forever

Chorus:
One step closer to heaven baby
Means one step closer to you
They'll be no more living without you baby
I'm counting each minute
'Till I'm back to you
One step closer to heaven baby
Hold on, hold on
Hold on to my lovin'

It doesn't matter just how long it takes

It's just a little bit longer,

Bruce!

I knew you'd comment Stef!

And yet the song still makes me want to dance and makes me happy!

Me too! I cant walk down the street to it without doing a little walk/dance step to it!

I disagree. It's its own genre rather than merely being a vague tag that popular songs would fit into. Otherwise, Bob Dylan and Miles Davis etc would be 'pop' due to their fame.

Always thought this line was strong for a 'pop lyric'. The Police - "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da"....

"And when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you"
