 A truly amazing film, but I cannot understand why so many quality scenes were left out. I recently watched the Special Edition and it pissed all over the first version.

It did indeed, but sitting in the cinema for four hours? No thanks.

Truly awesome movie though. Possibly my favourite.

 I prefer Fellowship of the Ring, mainly because of the abrupt end to the Pelennor Fields battle and some occasionally irritating lines in ROTK. However, Return of the King is better than The Two Towers and I never understood the whole "the endings go on too long" criticism, as everything is pretty much rushed through as quickly as possible towards the end, yet it's still a powerful ending.

 I think people who dislike the ending probably dislike the films anyway: the trilogy starts with a prologue because we're new to this world, but ends with a normal ending as it would cop out to our emotional engagement.

The only one of the trilogy not improved by its extended edition, which turned out to be a horrible mess for the most part. Which is a shame, 'cause I used to adore this film.

Spectacular, immense, awe-inspiring. A fitting conclusion to an incredbile trilogy. Quite simply this defines epic film-making, an achievement that few films or film series can match.

It may not be the 'best ever', but it's my favourite film of all time and can certainly lay claim to be among the very best (if no the best) blockbuster of all time. :)

I have to disagree. Saruman's death is excellent, as is WiKi's hour and the Mouth Of Sauron. I love all the added Frodo and Sam scenes which create a better sense of a journey, and Denethor is more sympathetic. Added scenes with Eowyn and Faramir create a better ending as we know what happens to these minor characters who we spend so much time with earlier before dissapearing.

I think he just over-indulged himself a little with the EE.

With FOTR about 30 minutes was added which was the ideal amount. It enhanced the story in all the right places and none of it was really 'filler'.

TTT had about 40 extra minutes which again enhanced the film and made it more complete, but there were definitely a few redundant scenes and cut have been trimmed by 10 minutes.

ROTK is by far the most complex of the 3 films and 50 minutes re-inserted. Many of the scenes were important and worked very well. Other scenes were either completely redundant and didn't help the film along, or were important scenes (from the book) but not pulled off as well as many other parts of the film.

The VOS, MOS and Gandalf vs Wiki were all significant scenes missing from the TC that I really looked forward to seeing but only the VOS really worked well in the EE. The whole extended POTD sequence/Corsairs scenes were completely unecessary and badly don IMO, and the extended Post-Pelennor scenes remained too abrupt.

I still prefer the EE for those added scenes that were done well, but try ignore the 15 or so minutes of not-so-good filler.

 Yeah some of the extra scenes did work for me I have to admit, the mouth of Sauron for instance I still think is very cool.  Its all the added stuff with Frodo and Sam that I think personally makes the extended edition drag. I wish you could pick which scenes you want to keep when watching it that would be a great feature for extended edition.

The original near-brilliant, but is too long and too drawn out. The EE is more so than this and has a real problem with pace.

As the EE's are aimed more at devoted fans, thirsty for more footage, to many 'regular' viewers I can see people thinking ROTK EE as a little drawn out. Certainly as a fan myself I think as mentioned earlier it can drag a little at some points, but then are are other additions that really help to devlop the story and expand upon events which I think are important. The TC's are generally pretty tightly cut IMO and the EE's allow much needed space to breathe. Any area that drag I can forgive in light of the areas that the EE improve upon the TC's.

With regards Frodo and Sam in Mordor, tha was strand of the story that was slightly undershown in the TC really. Especially considering how much book time is devoted here. After all, the ultimate point of the final book/film is for F&S to throw the Ring into Mount Doom. That said, I imagine it somewhat difficult to fill a movie with so much action on 1 side with 2 Hobbits trudging across desolate landscape for days.

 Very emotional and great. I thimk the best scene was the speach at the black gates given by aragorn. I loved the film and saw it at the cinema three times and then bought on the first day it came out and watched. I dunno if anyone noticed they made great christmas presents the moduls and the DVD's from the movies to lil kids and stuff. I can't believe how much money they made and the amazing thing is they went to every movie company like columbia tristar, touchstone etc... and they turned them down but new line cim=nema took it and look how much money they made. God bless new line cinema.

 Return of the King is magnificent and well deserved its 11 Oscars for 2003. Peter Jackson has demonstrated pure heart and devotion to a colossal project that many did not think could be done. Book devotee's should be thankful and praise these films as they will inspire many people to read Tolkien's works for years more to come. Critics of the film should just keep quiet and appreciate the hard work that went into these films and relish at the charge of 6000 Rohirrim attacking the army of Mordor at Minas Tirith. The battle scenes will become legend and they should be and the characters themselves will be missed in all their glory. I dont believe anyone who says they did not have a great big lump in their throat when the people of Minas Tirith bowed to the Hobbits either. Pure magic. Cinematic perfection!

 Gotta love these films, have finally watched all EE versions back to back which really enhances more trueness to the books. Only problem is how they killed off Saruman in completely the wrong place-he's supposed to be at the Shire at the end!!!!

It is a great film and one of my favourites of all time. It fully deserves its five star review by Empire and yet it is by far the worst conversion of book to film of the three.

Much of the material added by Peter Jackson was very poor indeed, such as the farce of the lighting of the beacon and the cavalry charge on Osgilith. Denethor was potrayed very poorly. The powerful character in the book, a proud man twisted by grief and despair, is gone, replaced by some cartoon villain who eats tomatoes while his men die on a fools mission.

Yes it is a great film, but it could have been so much better.
