FlashForward UK Speed - 4/9/2009 4:04:47 PM

Just seen an advert for a new series on Channel 5. From ABC FlashForward tells of an event where the entire poulation of America black out for a couple of minutes and during that time experience a vision of the future.

The series seems to deal with how people use or deal with this information. Had a squizz on IMDB and it's only shown a few episodes in the US so Five are on the ball airing this in Autumn.

Anybody heard anything good bad or indifferent about this one?

Oh and it's got Joseph Fiennes in it.

I imagine we'll have to wait a few months as it doesn't start till Spe 25th in the US, I think it's supposed to be one of the better new shows though mainly because it has a really cool concept.

Yeah my mistake. IMDB is showing plot synopsis for two episodes so I thought it had been aired. Looks like Five have snapped it up based on the pilot alone, a bold move. It's got Dom Monaghan and Jack Davenport in it too so a healthy British presence. Quite excited for this one now.

This just in from Digital Spy "Good news: Five is to air new drama FlashForward within days of US transmission.

The show, which is being tipped as the next Lost, debuts Thursday, September 24 on ABC. The UK premiere will follow the next week on Five.

The quick turnaround of FlashForward was ordered by Five's new controller Richard Woolfe, who popularised the whole fasttracking thing at Sky1 with shows such as Lost and 24."

Other channels should air days after the US that way the you're not watching a Christmas episode in the middle of July.
Saw the advert on FIVE and the yeah the show looks promising, it says it's written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Dark Knight) so that'll make things more interesting.

It's not just all of America, it's the whole world that black out for 2 mins and 17 secs.

I'm looking forward to this, I really am. I remember it being spoken about months ago but I can't for the life of me remember where.

Hopefully this can be as good as Abrams previous works. I want the excitement and desperation for another episode like I get with Lost. One can hope.

I wasnt aware that JJ Abrahms was involved in this show.

Ive seen the trailer on five and I have to say, it looks impressive.  Whats also impressive is that five are able premiere it so close to the US premiere, makes it all the more exciting.  Ive missed the week by week excitement if a TV show.

He's not, David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga created the show.

I don't know if there is anything wrong with them, but I can't get their signal in my area except for bank holiday in May provided the weather is clear.

I'm gonna give this a go but if I like it I know it'll eat me up. I've still yet to watch The Mentalist, Dexter, Surface, Jericho....

Damn the US and their brilliant shows.

When's this on then? Seems a bit Lost-y to me. Got Mad Men and Carnivale to watch on DVD too....

Their habit of having an advert break five minutes before the programme ends!

I've seen the pilot, and it's silly, but entertaining stuff. The acting was a bit iffy, and the writing wasn't the best, but it was fast paced and fun. It kind of reminded me of a Dan Brown novel, but in a good way. If they manage to keep the pace from the pilot up, it could be one hell of a ride, but I don't see how they'll manage to keep the premise up past the first season. I just hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as Prison Break did after the first excellent season.

I thought season 2 of Prison Break was really good, considering they, you know, escaped from the prison in season 1. Season 3 was where it jumped off over from the shark.

I normally don't have interest in one hour dramas, but I'll give this a chance, if it goes formulaic I will hunt the creators down and slap them, could be some fun for a Monday night.

Not a bad start. The opening half an hour was very impressive with some pretty cinematic set pieces and shots. It dulled a little in the middle but when you began to learn what people had seen it picked up again. The premise is interesting and if they focus on the other characters in the later episodes it might turn out to be something pretty cool. I'm not convinced with Fiennes as the lead and feel someone like Kevin Bacon or of similar caliber would have been better suited but I will give him the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

My only worry is that if the show is a success then they will have a new Flashforward every series which would lessen the impact of each incident.

Oh dear. Parts of that were really quite embarrassingly bad. All that set up and then they just didn't have a clue how to 'reveal' the premise - so Fiennes gets to say some of the worst dialogue he has had in his career (and with his career that's saying something) to sell the flash forward out of nowhere. And then try and sell that LA suddenly is in charge (just because Jack Bauer was based there hardly makes it the hub of anything but filmmaking - I rather think the grown-ups on the east coast might take an interest). And then - ta da! They try to sell someone moving. On one camera. Because someone was scrolling through all cameras and 'caught it'.

Threshold created their premise much better than this. They'll have the drama and the flashforwards but they just didn't get over the hurdle of selling their basic plot and they knew it. Back of a fag packet whip it past the viewer and hope they don't notice how ridiculous the realisation thing was.

And now it looks as if we have a season of some dreary love triangle. Yeh!

I really really enjoyed it, it flagged abit in the middle as James said but I thought it was great and will be watching next week.

And I forgot the dumb slo mo running to BIG emotive music - and then the wandering through water when he could see the pylon. And looters suddenly turning up out of nowhere cause, like, that's what would totally happen when society broke down.

Didn't they learn how stupid and poncy the animal wandering across was from Collateral?

I think I'm quite annoyed, really, at how bluntly cobbled together it was to try and get the tone of successful series rather than a coherent imaginative creation from someone who wanted to tell a story and take you along with it.

It was enjoyable, but the characters are pretty dull & it will probably go the way of Lost. . .

I really liked it. I agree that the big reveal was a bit crap but I loved the cliffhanger. I also like how it's bending my brain a bit. It's only called Mosaic because Fiennes saw that it was called Mosaic in his Flash. Three ways to handle this as far as I can see.
  • Chase your vision and end up making it happen.
  • Try to ignore it carry on as normal.
  • Actively try to make it not happen. eg If you were in Spain in your vision just don't go to Spain.
One thing that I'm confused about though. The kid in the hospital knew who Penny sorry Olivia was but it's safe to assume that he wasn't there when she was about to get it on with his Dad.

Anyway some slightly dodgy American accents aside I thought it was a cracking start to what I hope will be keeping me warm until the majesty of Lost returns.
