I am a massive Tarzan fan, I have both Volumes of the Weissmuller films and the Lex Baker/RKO films too and a couple of the Gordon Scott films, not the best though I am very fond of Greatest Adventure but they are a hell of a lot of fun. I'd avoid Ape Man unless of course you are a Bo Derek fan...

Greystoke is not too awful and gave me nightmares as a kid, those Apes are vicious buggers.

I would love to see another adaptation but with a good, sensible script with a decent actor and director. I wouldn't mind a take off of Philip Jose Farmer's fake bio Tarzan Alive.

I'm rather fond of Tarzan too, and as a matter of fact only yesterday ordered two of the box sets of the early movies, films I remember loving as a kid.  Perhaps they will seem a bit crap now?  I think Greystoke and Disney's Tarzan are both fine movies, but I agree, the definative Tarzan has yet to be made.  As someone else said, one problem is it will be full of [probably unconvincing] CG animals - there is no way they would use real animals much now.

I fondly remember the RKO Tarzan movies when I was a kid, and thanks to this thread I now know I didn't make up in my own head that he battled a giant spider. They used show these on a Saturday afternoon along with the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies.

All Tarzan films could be instantly improved by inserting a chimps tea party scene.

Disney's Tarzan is only slightly better than Tarzan X.

Yup, that's Tarzan's Desert Mystery. Just between you and me and him and that guy over there, it's probably my favourite Tarzan movie.

If they did a new Tarzan movie I think I would prefer a fantasy one where giant spiders existed in the jungle, think the King Kong island vs Tarzan, but maybe that's more Conan territory.

What is the difference between Tarzan and The Jungle Book, other than the different central characters? The live action Jungle Book is a quality movie.

They should do a Conan movie where Conan fights Nazis.

I'm pretty sure that all movies with improbably large animals are amazing. Especially Spy Kids 2.

Apparently Summit Entertainment are making a new animated film. In 3D.

So the Tarzan article in the new issue has re-inspired me to get the Weissmuller collections.

Has anyone got them? Definitely going to get Volume 1, but how good/bad is volume 2?

The Disney version of Tarzan will always be tainted by Phil Collins, especially that he won the Oscar over Aimee Mann. Not on.

Yeah it was awful, although she does get her baps out.

And I love George of the Jungle, well at least my kids did. I say it was good in the fact it kept them quiet for 2 hours.

Wasn't Stephen Sommers doing one for a while, has that already been said?

You could try the Buster Crabbe starring Tarzan the Fearless which was an early rival to the MGM films. Disclaimer: The Tarzan yodel sounds very, very wrong.

I don't think you can go past the six Tarzan films made by MGM and starring Johnny Weismuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. I've had the boxed set for years. (Reminds me, I must get around to watching them again.)

Trailer for Tarzan 3D:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28LU4D8z7Xs

Strangely very reminiscent of a sequence from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with the passage of time being shown as the character climbs a tree!

well it's not a big budget movie, so that's probably why it made you think that.
