I recently watched Mean Streets for the first time and had high expectations, but was very disappointed. I still enjoyed it and gave it 4 but no way a 5 star film really. I think it's overrated. What do you think of it?

Maybe slightly overated but still a good film.  I liked De Niro & Keitel in this.  Some good scenes, a good script, and Scorses in his element.

It does drift off a bit in places but for the most part highly enjoayable.  Plus it's good to see these great's in thier younger years.

I didn't like it that much but it got Deniro noticed and where would we be without him?

Mean Streets is a great little film and probably superior to Goodfellas and Casino, both incredibly overrated Scorsese flicks.

You have no idea do you. I cant actually believe you think goodfellas or casino
are overated you must just be really thick or not have actually see them.
But Mean Streets was a good film you have got one thing right.

Wow, that's a great argument. I'm thick and that's why I don't agree with you. Hmm... And for someone who's writing is atrocious and deems a film like The Godfather to be overrated because Al Pacino doesn't look old enough to be the head of a Mafia family, I don't think you are the one to judge me as being thick. Now go back to IMDb, please.

The Godfather is overated because its very long and boring in some parts. Its like
Once apon a time in America in a way that it drags on and on, and is surposed to be realistic but
does a poor job of showing realism. When a 20year old boy takes over a mafia crime family
it just does not happen ever in the mafia. And anyone that thinks casino and goodfellas are
overated and are not as good as meanstreets is (in my opinion stupid). Thats why i think the
Godfather is over rated.
Now go back to lMDb and do some reserch Rookie
PS; My poor English is my problem.

Yawn. And Michael wasn't 20 when he became the Don, for Gods sake. Your point about The Godfather being unrealistic is particularly far-fetched. Oh, and my English is shit as well.

Anyway guys, back onto the topic, Mean Streets (4/5). Certainly one of Scorsese's better films, but for some reason i can't really find it in my heart to award it five stars!

I personally love Mean Streets and never get tired of watching it. It certainly is Scorsese in his element and in my opinion one of his best works. I can see how it could disappoint but personally my initial feeling was shock, like i'd been slapped round the face by a wet fish, i'm not entirely sure. The performances from all struck me as phenomenal, and i'm not just talking about Keitel and De Niro. I would almost go as far to say that it's underrated.

Mean Streets for me is a masterpiece and i absolutley loved every minuete of it, Scorsese's style and use of lighting is simply breath taking, whislt De Niro and Keitel are at their peaks, brilliant. However in response to some of these pages it isn't better than Goodfellas, Casino maybe but certianly not Goodfellas. Whislt the Godfather basher needs to watch the film again and learn to like it because its genius. Oh Mean Streets * * * * *

i did like meanstreets but it is not one i can watch again and enjoy. i can see why some would be disappointed, however worth a watch if you are a de niro and scorsese fan.
i agree it is not better than goodfellas or casino. however it is different.
godfather. sheer genius, brando is the best. michael is supposed to be mid 20,s 30. and how do you know so much about the age of the heads of crime families. anything is possible.

It feels more natural than a lot of Scorsese's later films. Definitely worth returning to.

There was no script mate, it was just some guys arguing about nothing for 2 hours and Robert De Niros character was annoying as hell and a prick to boot, maybe i missed something but why was some random guy shot dead in the toilets by some other random guy, what was that all about?

really hate this film and was a complete waste of time watching it, 2/5

It's a great film filled with the Scorsese trademarks. I loved the soundtrack, but also think it's overrated. Still a great film. Watch it a second time, you'll probably enjoy it more.

Found it uninteresting at first, but after the second half I understood why it is so celebrated. Great film.
