I've been getting into podcasts lately over the past few weeks and am looking to expand my collection. I've been through a few different podcasts but the ones I currently subscribe to is /Filmcast and The Guardian Football Show.

What podcasts do you listen to and which ones would you recommend to other people? Although I am into football, films and games etc I am open to try anything.

Without a shadow of a doubt, the greatest podcast is The Ricky Gervais Show. I can listen to them over and over again and still crack up laughing when I'm walking down the street. And there's such a wealth of catalogue to get too - especially if you get your hands on the XFM Radio Shows which are pretty much the same thing.

But in terms of a weekly type thing, the only thing that's really interested me is Jonathon Ross' which is a shortened version of his radio show on Saturdays.

I listen to /Film too, that's a pretty amiable one; just trying out Filmspotting, one of the presenter's voices wears on me a bit but overall the content is good; Creative Screenwriting has interesting stuff in it though the presenter's the weakest element; FX Guide is really excellent, I can't recommed that enough though it's monthly; and Mark Kermode's Five Live one.

I love podcasts.

I listen to lots of Leo Laporte's twit.tv podcasts like This Week In Tech, Security Now, MacBreak Weekly... (there are numerous others).
http://twit.tv/
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=146041210

The Force-cast is a very good Star Wars podcast, they do a weekly show and plenty of interviews and discussion podcasts too.
http://www.forcecast.net/
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=73330349

As a film fan, you might like to check out the podcasts from Creative Screen Writing Magazine. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=77837603

I'm also enjoying a couple of video podcasts right now; the Car Pool podcast with Robert Llewellyn (the dude who played Kryten from Red Dwarf) where he interviews various people whilst giving them a lift in his car.
http://www.llewtube.com/
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=302529378

Also David Mitchell's Soapbox from channelflip.com (who also do loads of other interesting stuff).
http://www.channelflip.com/
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=304386324

There's plenty of BBC ones too, but stuff them getting a proper mention when they can't be bothered to host them for more than a week

The three I listen to religiously are,

Smodcast - Kevin Smith's podcast in which he smokes quite a bit and talks about crap, but mostly film. Very funny when he's not talking about Ice Hockey.

Collings and Herrin podcast - Andrew Collins and Richard Herring's podcast. A great double act, very funny and inane.

Adam and Joe - They're on hiatus at the moment (back in a few weeks) but this is by the far the best podcast on the net in my humble opinion.

After i got a dab radio and started listening to 6music, i found out that Adam and Joe had a saturday morning show and immediately subsribed to the podcasts, hilarious. I even found the old xfm ones from a few years ago.

Jonathon Ross' podcast, David Mitchells and the chris moyles one also fill my ipod weekly. I use itunes and funnily enough, the most popular podcasts on there are generally the best!

I might look into that kevin smith one though.

I tried the Kevin Smith one today and it didn't really do it for me. The Mark Kermode one was pretty good, as was the Ricky Gervais podcasts.

I do like podcasts and radio shows, particularly comedy ones, and particularly when I'm driving, but it does mean I'm listening to far less music these days.

I posted a version of this elsewhere, so sorry if I'm boring anyone!

Current subsciptions:
- Adam & Joe 6 Music - Listened from the start, currently have about 25 unheard...
- Stephen Fry podcast - On-going. Heard 6 or 7, got the recent iTunes festival ones to go.
- Mark Kermode & Simon Mayo Film reviews on 5 Live - On-going. Have heard 20-25 so far and have the last 4 or 5 unheard.
- The Writers' Room (Jimmy Carr). On-going. Hard to tell if I missed any of the early ones, as they're just slices of evidently long writing sessions. Heard about 8, and have 3 unheard.
- David Mitchell's SoapBox (video) - Haven't started, though I think I have them all (about 20?).
- Ninja Tune podcast - Some music for a change! The first features a Mr. Scruff set! Unheard!
- Solid Steel podcast - have 5 or 6 episodes. So far, all unheard.
- The Ricky Gervais Guide To... S1 - 5 eps. Yet to start.

Other stuff on my ipod:
- Ricky Gervais XFM - Series 2 - Eps 24-74. I'm up to the final episode now!
- Ricky Gervais XFM - Series 3 - Eps 75-86. Yet to start.
- Ricky Gervais XFM - Series 4 - Eps 87-92. Yet to start.

Others podcasts / radio shows I've listened to:
- Ricky Gervais XFM - Series 1 - Eps 1-23
- Ricky Gervais Podcast S4 aka The Podfather
- Adam & Joe XFM series
- Timeghost (Armstrong & Miller) - Mark Thomas
- 15 Minutes of Misery (Sean Lock)
- 15 Storeys High - Series 1 & 2
- Flight of the Conchords
- On The Hour - Series 1, 2 & the specials
- The Sofa of Time (Nick Frost & Matt King)
- The Unbelievable Truth - Series 1 & 2
- Vic Reeves' House Arrest (might have missed one episode)
- Russell Brand's Radio 2 show - listened to tons of it, from Jan 2007 til he went off air in 2009

Apologies for this mini-hijack of your thread, James...
I'm a bit all over the place with the Gervais audio, having heard The Podfather stuff first, and then going back to the XFM radio series. There's quite a lot of the radio stuff available to download. The podcasts cost money, and presumably are still available through iTunes.
As a reminder to myself, and in case anyone else is interested, below is a note of the broadcast / release order, and d/l links.

I've just started getting in podcasts and was wondering if anyone can recommend any free history podcasts. Particularly anything to do with the Tudors, the Renaissance, the Middle Ages. Although i'd love anything really apart from the Romans and World War II because i've seen and read a lot about those lately.

Might not be too relevant to you, but Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcasts are good. He's not a history expert, just a fan, but it's his fan's enthusiasm that makes him so easy to listen too. His three-part Punic Nightmares 'cast is particularly enjoyable.

As much as I adore any of their other work (The Office being my favourite British show), the XFM radio shows are to me, their most hilarious work. It's scary to think how much I've re-listened to them over the past few years but they never get old. Would quite easily be my chosen Mastermind subject, should that day ever occur...

I actually downloaded a couple of his but i couldn't stand his delivery, plus there was a lack of any real information.

Does anyone know which Kevin Smith Smodcasts had him talking about why Zack and Miri bombed? I've heard they are pretty awesome but can't be bothered to go back through 90+ podcasts.

This isn't going to help at all but I know he was talking about it long before I started listening to the podcasts (probably around the 75 mark). He does talk about it quite alot though and is quite bitter about it as well as the reasons Rosario Dawson pulled out.

He's over in the UK at them moment and I'd love it if he did a podcast with one of his British friends.

Not a podcast per se but these guys have been talking about movies and putting it on the net for longer: http://www.renegadecommentaries.co.uk/.

Two excellent horror centric podcasts are Mondo Movie. http://www.mondomovie.com/ and Horroretc http://www.horroretc.com/.

Genrebusters was also fantastic but now defunct: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=36019

Allmovietalk was another excellent show that is now defunct: http://www.podcastalley.com/podcast_details.php?pod_id=40981

MMMCommentaries, commentaries and podcasts, focused mostly on scif-i: http://www.mmmcommentaries.com/

Filmjunk is pretty good if just for the guy who frequently threatens to punch people in the throat. http://www.filmjunk.com/

Avoid Filmspotting, it's snotty film student wank that will make you want blow your brains out.

I used to listen to Kermode but grew tired of the tangential wank and mostly pretentious e-mails from listeners that has began to take over the show.

For football you only need Off the Ball and Johnny Giles: http://newstalk.ie/newstalk/off-the-ball/podcasts.html
