Starz is firming up the cast and story line for its "Spartacus" prequel series, whose subtitle will be the epic-sounding "Gods of the Arena."

Three Australian actors have joined the cast, including Dustin Clare in the lead role.

Clare ("Underbelly," "Satisfaction") will play Gannicus, the champion gladiator in the House of Batiatus before Spartacus came along.

"Spartacus" star Andy Whitfield, who was sidelined for several months after being diagnosed with cancer, will make a brief appearance in the prequel. He has been cleared by doctors to return to work.

"Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" will begin production on six episodes next month and will hit the air in January. Season 2 of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," starring Whitfield, will begin production immediately after "Arena" wraps and air later in 2011 for an undetermined number of episodes.

Starz also has cast Jaime Murray ("Dexter) as a Capua social climber and Marisa Ramirez ("General Hospital") as a slave girl.

In the prequel, Batiatus (John Hannah) is not yet the head of his family or of the gladiator training school. Gannicus is the lead gladiator in the Ludus, but the House of Batiatus hasn't earned social respect or the right for its gladiators to fight in championship bouts. Gannicus struggles to turn around the House's luck.

Spartacus: Blood And Sand stars Lucy Lawless and John Hannah have revealed details of the upcoming prequel miniseries Gods of the Arena.

Lawless told fans at this year's Comic-Con that the new six-parter will explore gladiator arena the Ludus in its early days.

"The Ludus is not at the top of its game. It's all second-rate," she said. "I don't think anybody's killed anybody yet so they've got that going for them. They're pretty normal Roman folks at the start and you just see them being corrupted by their circumstances."

Her co-star Hannah confirmed: "The prequel will be about the rise of the gladiator arena as a spectacle in the city. At this point the arena itself is a much smaller affair."

The pair also explained that the miniseries will match the original show's tense atmosphere and bloody violence.

"It's jam-packed with manoeuvring," said Lawless. "It doesn't ease into the series."

"I believe there's prosthetics for violence that happens in the first episode," added Hannah.

By Jupiter's cock! More violence!

Titbits on the prequel series and season 2.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand creator Steven S. DeKnight has revealed that the fate of the characters featured in prequel series Gods of the Arena is not as clear-cut as fans might think.

Speaking to Blastr, he denied that gladiator Gannicus (Dustin Clare) was likely to die since he did not appear in the original show.

"Yes, there are characters, obviously, that you know survive into season one, and there are new characters who aren't in season one who you may [suspect] don't survive," he admitted. "[But] we do have a way to mix that up so you're never quite 100% sure."

DeKnight confirmed that the prequel would not only fill in the backstory of Blood and Sand, but also set up the forthcoming second season.

"There are things that happen in the prequel that come back around in season two," he said. "So in that way it all ties together. If the prequel were purely telling stories and filling in information that we learned in season one, I would have had some doubt."

Series star Lucy Lawless also recently promised that the six-part miniseries would "surprise" viewers.

Also a pretty epic trailer of the DVD set - http://www.beyondhollywood.com/spartacus-blood-and-sand-dvdblu-ray-cover-art-and-specs/

They will need to come in at some point - the show has to move to Rome. Can't wait to see all the political backstabbing there!

Am I right in thinking the R2 Blu-Ray set isn't out until the end of May??! I was hoping it would come out a little sooner than that, why's the wait so long? I never managed to catch this on the TV but have heard good things.

I made my mate watch the pilot on Saturday. He was hooked and by last night finished the entire series. His verdict? Best. Series. EVER. He loves his tits and violence, bless him.

Remember that bit from In The Loop DVD Deleated scenes

"All you would ever need was a movie called There Will be Blood and Their Will Be Tits!"

That is pretty much Spartacus.

Awful news.

I don't think recasting can work. More likely they will do the prequel and just leave it as it is.

That's awful news. I really hope he makes a full recovery. I hope Starz put season 2 on hold until 2012 and don't recast.

They won't want to leave it, it's a very profitable series for Starz and immensely popular.

I'd say wait for Whitfield to recover but that could be years and you don't want to lose traction and momentum. Still, it could mean it becomes one of the most anticipated second series ever!

Recasting may be an option.... but it's too early to speculate just yet.

I hope he recovers soon. Watched him on a youtube video where he's filmed this action short spoof of Time Crisis and in the making of after he just comes across as a really genuinely nice guy. Speedy recovery, Andy.

I'd guess that they'll recast - it's Starz's big show and while recasting's a rare occurrence these days, because fans are aware of the reasons and it has Whitfield's blessing, the new actor will have everyone's support in going forward.

Fingers crossed for Whitfield, regardless.

I just wrote an article for Den of Geek and I theorise and for the interim (while Whitfield gets treatment) they do a one-off other series on another historical character. Like Hannibal of Carthage.

I think it's a case of the makers have to think about the crew and other cast and their availability. I mean it's really sad but Whitfield said himself he's all for recasting or finding another lead. These people may not be able to be at a moments notice to jump back into second season. Ideally I'd rather they just leave it. Go with a whole new character and cast etc. End of the day it's just a tv show! His health is the main thing.
