Sex was primarily about penetration so you're absolutely right, there was no distinction or loss of a sense of masculinity for a man to have penetrative sex with another man.

As for women, bit of an odd one there. According to Ovid it didn't happen, but later in the Imperial days there seems to be some evidence of a bit of girl on girl. Fricatrix was the word.

As for the whole Lanista thing, trying to revisit my studies a bit here so please correct my if I'm wrong, if I remember rightly Lanista came from the Etruscan road for executioner. As they had complete control over their slaves, that makes sense.

As for them not being happy to kill off so many after the cost of training and feeding them, there was a limited number of gladiators a citizen could own. Something like 300 pairs, they wouldn't have cost a massive amount to buy and probably a few of them would have died during training. If they weren't tough enough to hack that then why bother? Considering though that the Lanista could be paid anywhere up to (the equivalent) of around $500,000 for the glory of providing gladiators it was a worthwhile venture.

For a minute I forgot who the Etruscans are, I am ashamed....

I might need to re-check this but a quick look seems to say you're right. Still, the deaths were much less frequent than usually shown in films and money spent in training the gladiators is still money and having that gladiator die was not something those who trained them wanted, hence the deaths not being that frequent.

I need to re-read this though, I read that some time ago and my memory is sketchy.

Writer 1: How can we economically combine our episode's quota of both sex and violence?

Writer 2: I know! A fight in a brothel!

Writer 1: Boom! *they high five.

It doesn't start until tonight does it mate?

I can't wait... I did notice a certain character is back that I wasn't expecting... very odd.

Not convinced on the new lead actor, but I'm going to give him time. Good strong opener, surprised Lucretia survived....

Watched Blood & Sand and Gods of the Arena in two days.

Best show still on TV (not watched Game of Thrones yet). Nothing more can be said, everything about it is perfect.

The relationship between Crixus and Naevia was so well done:

''The champion of Capua...''

Haven't watched this because I know what its all about, sex, violence, gore and testosterone to the max which is fine but not my cup of tea these days. I have glimpsed parts of it and can see the appeal however (always had a thing for Lucy Lawless going back to Xena!); I watched Rome when that was on a few years back and that was equally as naff :)

Not a patch on Game of Thrones for me but I am not dissing Spatacus in any way.

They must have used a fair chunk of their FX budget for that shot of the mines. However if it's a taste of things to come, especially with half the slaves heading to Vesuvius, this show is getting epic pretty quickly.

Nice to see they're laying the ground work for Gannicus' return, but I can't believe Onaemaeus would be so quick to believe Ashur. Also, it was good to see Ashur's skills as a fighter put back to the fore. You forget that he was a gladiator, albeit not the greatest, before he was a scheming weasel.

Nice cliffhanger and good to see secrets quickly flushed into the open to prevent it being dragged over several episodes.

The latest episode is awesome. Granted there are some dodgy FX when the arena is collapsing, but that doesn't detract from a great episode.

Plus Gannicus is back! My cock rages on for that man (in a completely heterosexual way of course).

Yeah it was fantastic, loved Sparty and co running into the area dressed as the Roman soldiers and fucking shit up, and Gannicus life seems to have gone a bit shit doesn't it? Liked the call backs to Gods of the Arena though.

Hopefully, now we'll get Glabar leading a whole cohort against the slaves. Time to regroup! To Mount Vesuvius!

Things went to shit sooner than expected, but that was an awesome episode once again. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel really sorry for Glaba?

I do more than "Glabrus" in the 1960 version. He was a smug git that deserved his downfall.

Casting is under away for the 3rd/4th seasons!

Starz and Spartacus producers have just cast actors to play famed leader Julius Caesar and wealthy general Marcus Crassus in the hit show. EW has learned exclusively that Australian TV actor Todd Lasance (Crownies) has been cast as a young Caesar, who will begin his ascent toward ruling the empire. He’ll use his intelligence and deadly skill with a sword to try and crush the slave rebellion.

British TV actor Simon Merrells (The Wolfman, Family Affair) will play Crassus, the richest man in Rome, who craves the power and respect that would come from defeating Spartacus.
