This has excited me like a bout of herpes. Scott is a hack who hasn't made a great movie since Black Rain and this a dead as Dodo franchise that should be left alone (just like Batman, Terminator et al).

*spit take* "Hack?" McQueen? One thing Scott isn't is a "Hack"

"I have to disagree with your policework there..." Owen, Building a film around the species that were the size of the Space Jockey (compared to humans) would be tough to get people to engage with 'Alien vs Space Jockies' would make a cool spin-off though, especilly if it was against real Jockies :p
I'm thinking it will be a new team of humans, stumbling blindly into the Aliens in the same way as in the first film, the filmmakers may see this as going back to the routes of the Franchise...Critics and Bloggers may call it a retread.

Mcqueen does have a point though. Name one great movie of his made after 1991s thelma& louise? And I don't consider gladiator to be a masterpiece...

Ridley follows on from Paul Anderson and The Strauss Brothers. Not good.

Do sci-fi but something new please.

Yea American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Body of Lies were really poor films. He also made this little indie flic called Gladiator which no one went to see. What a hack!

Personally I am so excited by this I did a little geek sex wee...

Kingdom of Heaven. Case closed.

If you want another one - Matchstick Men.

Most of his movies have something going for them, even the ones that aren't masterpieces.

As to this story, I'll believe it when I am sat in the cinema and a trailer comes on.

Thats why I am uncertain as to how you can have a prequel with the Space Jockey. That ship has been there for a LONG time before Ripley and Co. land.

I suspect if they do explore the Space Jockey it will be a different one from another ship.

It just boggles my mind trying to figure out how they would do a prequel of all things. Just have a movie set in that universe - you don't need to call it anything.

Oh and fingers crossed that we don't see Ripley again.

I liked Alien 4 and would be far more interested in seeing a continuation of the story with them landing on Earth than a prequel. Really can't understand all the hatred aimed at part 4, it looked amazing and I thought the Ripley arc was fascinating.

Agree; really enjoyed 4 (have no love for the CGI Aliens and I think their is a bit too much reliance on gore but that aside!). I want to see a return to form for the Alien series so I can get the bloody horrific memories of the AVP films out of my head and to be honest if anyone can do it the Geordy can.

I just hope its made genuinely scary like the first three films were...

Alien: Resurrection looked great but that was it, wasn't scary, Ripley wasn't Ripley, the Queen was wasted, the aliens were like Raptors in Jurassic Park, and setting in 200 years into the future and removing the Company made it feel out of place with the other films.

Be sensible. A lot of the people posting here seem to love this franchise. This is the best possible outcome for the production of the next film.

There will inevitably be another alien movie at some point. The best possible turn of events is that Ridley Scott takes the project under his wing, as the man who created such a compelling world in the first place, and helps to restore the franchise someway towards respectability.

Ryuheu: Gladiator is a great film, regardless of what you think. Also, any man whose body of work includes the original Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise and Gladiator can not be considered a hack director.

By a reboot I'm thinking more the company discovering the xenomorphs and the Space jockey if involved at all would be a side point.

I dont see it working any other way but my interest is piqued.

Scott has always been reluctant to do sequels (he said this when Hannibal was released), seems strange he wants to do a fourth (or sixth) sequel/prequel in a franchise.

the first two films are classics, proper sci-fi horrors. The 3rd was boring and the 4th was trying to hard to be a blockbuster which killed off the horror element. The last two outings for Aliens at the box office (AVP 1&2) have been utter cow dung!
Unless Scott goes back to using puppets, tiny sets, no lights and a low budget I cant help but be afraid that any attempt to go back into this mythology will result in a 12A,family friendly, CGI bore-fest that will aim to pull in cash rather than please the fans. Its just the way hollywood seems to be at the moment.
And to anyone slagging Gladiator, what the hell is wrong with you people? Classic movie, masterpiece of modern cinema and one of Scott's best.

The fact that the Space Jockey scene is there unexplained is it's strongest point, it leaves your imagination to fill the gap. Showing us the preceeding story would take something away from Alien and our first journey onto LV-426. It's like in Bladerunner during Roy's speach at the end. It's so emotive and filled with so much imagery that to see it on screen would just not do it justice.
Seeing the aliens wipe out earth human life on would be crazy to see though.

Hopefully he'll drop that fucking monopoly movie now. I was sick of hearing him try to rationalize involvement in that bullshit project.

I couldn't agree more, I'm a big Alien(s) fan (and even quite like Alien³), so after being so disappointed with all of the other movies, the best news anyone could have hoped for is for the franchise to return to the people who made it a classic in the first place.

For better or worse, the Alien franchise producers have always prided themselves on getting fresh and dynamic up and coming directors on board. I think Rinsch would have done a wonderful job on the evidence of his commercials. Scott really hasn’t made a decent film since Gladiator so I just can’t get overly exited by this news. It actually saddens me that the genius’ at Fox were too scared to take a risk on an exiting new talent.

I don't want to see the Space Jockey alive, but I wouldn't mind seeing the type of creature that came from it - if we accpet the idea that the Alien takes on its hosts characterisitcs...might give Scott an excuse to develop a new design.

Personally as long as the movie dosen't come out and say "This is a prequel, remake, reboot" I will just treat it as another film in the established universe.

I do remember Scott also talking about a Planet of the Alien type idea. He and Cameron did apparently cook something up years ago - whether there was a genuine document or it was discussed over dinner I dunno.

this is easily the best news i've had in a bad news week. Alien 3 was utter bullcrap, and Resurrection wasn't great, but i enjoyed the dark humour Joss Whedon gave the script. After the crummy, piss-taking AVP films, this is definitely a huge step in the right direction
