There will also be a 2-disc edition of Kamikaze Girls released on 8th Feb 2010.

I really liked Kamikaze Girls. I'm not sure why they feel the need for another release though - there are already a couple of extras on the single disc.

Update:

Oasis was released today.

No. 3 is supposed to be released today, but most online stores still say "pre-order", or "in stock soon". HMV is currently the only exception, saying it is in stock.

Instant Swamp may see a theatrical release in Jan 2010, with the DVD following around March.

For those aiming to pick up the Lee Chang Dong films from Third Window, you might have a long wait to complete the set. They're having difficulties obtaining a decent version of Peppermint Candy.

...it may be a while before the release, probably at least not until after march 2010.

Thats a real shame on the peppermint candy front. I wasn't able to purchase the Lee Chang Dong boxset when it was around, so I was looking to complete the set this way

What has everyone been doing about picking up his 4th film anyway? It doesnt seem to be on the schedule for Third window films.

Secret Sunshine? Looks like it'll have to be an import job.
It's OOS at K2, but the HK version is cheap in various places.
The 2-disc SK version is available in various places, but the cost is about twice that of the HK release.

On DVDAsian, the SK version says "Korean subtitles only". However, a view of the dvd's back cover shows it to have Korean and English subs...
HKFlix and Sensasian disagree, saying it does have English subs. Dunno whether this means the one DVDAsian are selling is a different release, or whether they're wrong.

I'm sure people on here have imported the Korean release, so it must have English subs.

If the front cover is the same as K2s then it does have Eng subs (it's my 2nd version as I had a rather annoying splitting DVD incident removing the disc from the first ).

Amazon US does seem to have copies of the film at the $15-$20 mark. But this has really screwed any future intention of submission to Hall of Fame for either of them.

its pretty expensive on ebay around the 12 mark though there is a much cheaper one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Secret-Sunshine-Korean-Movie-With-Eng-Sub_W0QQitemZ130323046352QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Movies_Movies_TV_Shows?hash=item1e57dbdfd0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_708wt_732

HKFlix to buy direct?

The Ebay postage from Australia isn't that much - about a fiver still making the total under a tenner.

Lala Pipo will have a anamorphic widescreen transfer, removable subs, 30 min Making Of, Interviews with the cast and crew, trailer and trailers of other Third Window releases.
Love Exposure will have anamorphic widescreen transfer, removable subs, 1 hour long Making Of, trailer and trailers of other Third Window releases. Not sure on 5.1 on either yet
Also... in addition to the aforementioned 2-discer of Kamikaze Girls, there will also be a BD release.

I loved Kamikaze Girls, so Lala Pipo is a cert. I've give Love Exposure a shot - there was a lot of good stuff in Suicide Club, as well as the poor.

Opening scene up until the kind of silly chucking the red stuff about really was very good.

I think a lot of the investigation side wasn't bad and his final arrival home pretty effective as well. It lost me pretty completely from the bowling alley, though.

Ooh, I'd forgotten that bit - Genesis, wasn't it?
It had a brilliant premise that was basically the same as the intro to Jane's Addiction's Ritual de lo Habitual album: "We have more influence over your children than you do"... and then does nothing with it.  Battle Royale handles this whole shift in the mentality of modern Japan's youth superbly, Suicide Club does that for a while and then has a bit of a 'will this do?' moment that buries the satire in drivel   That's probably why I feel a bit cheated with this film, as it could so easily have been a lot better.

'cheated' is a good word for it. And ditto on Battle Royale - I even remembered to mention that when I reviewed the film in the top 100 thread!

You need to add EUREKA to Dvd labels that are releasing world cinema, especially asian. Also Masters of cinema label is actually a Sub label of EUREKA.

Also add FABULOUS films to the list as they distribute world cinema including some asian films such as SEX and FURY

There is a thread in DVD discussion for Masters of Cinema titles (as well as talking about any EUREKA releases that interest you)

http://www.empireonline.com/forum/tm.asp?m=723740

As for films from Third window, Kamikaze girls is showing on Film4 this thursday at 11.15pm (repeat the following tuesday after midnight). Will definitely be recording that!

Edit: Also, Memories of Matsuko is on Film4 Monday 16th November at 11.15pm

At the lower end Death Note 1 and 2 will be on this week too - it's a New Asian season.

Kamikaze Girls is great - it would be interesting if they developed what they showed from Korea as well, though.

Yeah I know you are a fan of Kamikaze girls, which has got me a little worried as I havent had the greatest track record with films you like recently

I did notice the Death note films are on (and I will record the 2nd as I havent seen it) but I was really disappointed with the first. The idea is brilliant, but the production values and the story really let down what could have been a really interesting concept. Ah well, maybe the 2nd is better.

I think the only other 'new' film to film4 for this Asian season is Ashes of time redux which is showing twice I think. Yeah I definitely hope they show more Korean films (as far as im aware all they show is Park's films).

And so it continues - Cyborg is on again next week.

Kamikaze is a very idiosyncratic film - I was really surprised at how much I loved it as a description might have made me think twice about getting it!

BUT - great news for those who haven't picked it up yet, the biggest and best newbie to the series is on next week - Kurosawa's "Tokyo Sonata".

I'm glad you two were discussing this as I might have missed it. I used to check Film4 religiously, butthere hasn't been much on that's grabbed my attention for ages, so I haven't bothered.

I've set Ashes of Time, Death Note 1 & 2 and Kamikaze Girls to record. Is Memories of Matsuko any cop?

Plus I see they're showing House of Flying Daggers, I'm a Cyborg and Zatoichi (got 'em) and as you say, Tokyo Sonata (another I'll be recording).

Do those 9 films make up the season?

Looks like it.

I've got but haven't managed to watch Memories yet although it is really on my 'want to' list after Kamikaze.

I doubt it in general  - they'd have the same rights issues the Beeb has with iplayer.

An idiot has designed that new cover - the original fitted well with the film and the character. The new one has been done by someone who clearly hasn't seen the film - garish and neon. The opposite of the character.

It looks like Amazon (I havent checked elsewhere) has dropped the prices for a couple of these films. So now:
Teenage hooker became a killing machine 4.98
Oasis 5.78
No.3 5.48
Guns and talks 4.98
Dasepo naughty girls 5.68
Kick the moon 5.48
Funuke, show some love, you losers 5.48
Fine, totally fine 5.48
Turtles are surprisingly fast swimmers 5.48

So not a massive drop (only 1-2 generally) but there is a couple I wouldnt mind picking up. I hope they stay like that for a little while though as I spent quite a bit yesterday so dont really want to order more stuff already
