Watching EXTENDED CUT again right now, I've noticed such details that make for great film-making - editing, cinematography, lighting (the film looks flawless on blu-ray) and Brian Tyler's score is excellent. Obviously nobody can ever match the late, great Jerry Goldsmith but Tyler's work is exceptional.

That'd be cool! I'm not certain but I'll bet that these guys were the prototype 'Expendables'. I hope Sly mentions it in the upcoming commentary.

Rambo was the first Stallone film I saw at the Cinema and it didn't let me down. Love it. A proper old school action flick.

Yeah, it totally brings back everything to both Rambo and the viewer - gives you a reminder of who the man really is...

Much as I loved THE EXPENDABLES, this film was easily the best of Sly's three 'comeback' films - for Snake-Eyes anyway. ROCKY BALBOA was of course a great film too and I really liked the fact that both of his most famous characters' journeys came to an end. The thing about the fourth Rambo film I really dig is that it really is a raw, 80's -style adventure that also works as an effective modern-day actioner minus the yawn-worthy CG-reliant scenes or 'wink-to-the-audience' references.

completely agree

Rambo IV is the golden jewel in the 3 movies you mention

each film is brilliant, but there is something about Rambo IV that elevates it about the other two

however, I cannot wait to add The Expendables on HD Blu-Ray to my collection which already has Rambo IV and Rocky Balboa regularly viewed in HD goodness ;)

Can I just say I think Rambo IV is better than The Expendables. I just enjoyed it more, both as an action romp and a brutal war film. I dont get Empire's unrelenting hatred of it, I mean Stallone did his research into Burma and portrayed the brutalities of the junta as realistically as possible, not for entertainment but to show the world what war is really like and to give more gravity than the previous films.
And the critics said its unecessarily violent, I disagree and thats why its all the more satisfying when we reach the epic showdown.

An entire army vs Rambo with a mounted cannon! I know who my moneys on. Saving Private Ryan has nothing on this...

...pure bloody magic.

"Fuck the world"

Couldn't agree more.

And the original idea was to have Rambo HOLDING the .50cal machine-gun?! It was doable, but Stallone decided against it.

EMPIRE seem to have an unrelenting hatred for most of Stallone's films - just as they seem to worship anything / everything by the likes of Edgar Wright and his cronies.

But THE EXPENDABLES did completely annihilate that little Scott Pilchard film at the box-office so what do I care?

It's pretty funny.  For months on end Empire [who seems to have it's head constantly up Wright's arse] was full of articles telling people how awesome Scott Pilgrim was going to be and predictably gave it a five star review, but the general public [whom I don't always agree with]  weren't fooled, smelt a turd and stayed away..  I quite enjoyed Shaun and Hot Fuzz but Scott Pilgrim really was an ordeal to sit through.

Funnily enough, a good friend of mine was rying to recommend this film to me a few days ago but then thought better of it after recalling my love for Stallone Movies and the fact that I have no time for Mr. Wright.

Anyhoo - I think I'm due a re-viewing of RAMBO IV on blu-ray soon. It looks and sounds absolutely flawless. I still find it a bit funny that Graham "Lewis" McTavish is about to emabrk upon an adventure over at Middle Earth/New Zealand... "Come and 'ave a go at me you lady-ORC C**T!!"

I watched The Expendable on Blu-Ray last night, for the 2nd time, and I am growing to love it more with each viewing

its still not of the same quality as the 4th Rambo film, but some of the characters and scenes in The Expendables are very, very good

I am thinking of the scene with Sly and Stath in the flying boat gunning up the docks, Stath taking on the wife-beater and his friends on the basketball court, Dolph's attack on Sly and Jet in the cars and factory, and of course the entire end sequence where the Expendables go into action against the "bad guys" especially Terry Crews with his automatic shotgun!

I think the film as a whole, feels somewhat disjointed? but its huge fun, and worth rewatching

a really poignant moment is "Tool" talking about the killing in Bosnia and the loss of his soul
