My missus is from Yorkshire and I've been there three times, Sheffield, Rotherham and York and really liked all three... yes... even Rotherham.

Dear lord.
Surely not Rotherham!

That said I'm only annoyed with Rotherham as they got booted out of their stadium and I had to go watch Rotherham vs Darlington at the Don Valley Stadium which was frigging freezing!

I also know I'm in Leeds when I see the Co-operative funeral building from the train window.
Which basically says to me that Leeds is the place people go to die.

which one is that?

I always find that weird, people who spend time deciding on the place they want to die.

When I was at the cricket last month the girl behind me kept talking about how she wanted to die in India. Frankly I think it's morbid.

Sorry, bit off topic there.

Sheffield is my closest city but i'm actually from Derbyshire and proud of it.  The Yorkshire/Derbyshire divide is a great one and so I have a general dislike of Yorkshire folks attitude that their county is holier than thou, e.g. sadly, our local news is Look North and on more than one ocassion they have tried to convince viewers that Bakewell Show and Chatsworth House are both in Yorkshire! Nope, afraid not - they are both in Derbyshire!

It's that kind of 'we are wonderful and have all this great heritage' (even when it's clearly not in the county of Yorkshire!!) that really pisses us Derbyshire folk off!

Anyway, just wanted to add that little detail to the discussion.

I went to the open day a couple of days ago and it is a buzzing city and you're right some of the buildings are fantastic looking. Im a bit confused though, that my mum said theres a building in Leeds city centre thats given the ugliest builfing award near the station- I refuse to believe this when there is a new building in Sheffield City Centre that looks like a fucking cheese grater!! ... the rest of the city was really nice though- and it has trams!!!

That cheese grater cost a small fortune to design, houses a Q-Park car park which glows green at night, and manages to waste about two floors worth of parking spaces by making you drive up a spiralling entrance (it's like being on an Alton Towers ride but without the fun aspect!). It's one of a number of new car parks in Sheffield which have been a complete waste of money and will never be filled - just check out the 70's brown monstrosity opposite the new fire station. Sheffield is a city which is years behind other major UK cities such as Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester, etc... it's somehow managed to get left behind whilst all the other cities have become more cosmopolitan. Sad really!

I used to live in York, and now live in a satellite village to the south where it's all flat and there's nothing on the skyline except lots of great big cloud-making machines...

Yeah, I live in one!  They are a tad pricey, but that's because it's a nice place to live

I love being from Yorkshire! It really is God's chosen county  I love Sheffield, except for some very questionable architecture, such as the cheese grater and that building shaped like a kettle. They were ill-advised.

Gah. Three weeks back down south and I'm missing Yorkshire all ready. What the hell has the poxy north done to me?! One of my favourite cinemas is in Sheffield - the Showroom. They make a mean cocktail in there.

Is this the self-confessed "god's county"?

What are you doing in Seoul Mozza?

No, I don't like Bradford either, or Leeds for that matter. Both are very intimidating cities I find, and that has nothing to do with the multi-cultural aspect as some people have previously suggested to me, I live in south-east London, you don't get much more multi-cultural than around here I can assure you of that.

I teach English to small children. The easiest job I've ever had.

That said, as soon as I return, I'm going to go to Malham, walking up to Gordale Scar and then chilling at the top of Malham Cove.

Bliss.

Will be moving to Newport, looking forward to it, near to family, and also moving for creative purposes. Far more to offer than where I am now... however will miss the north east.
