I live near Leeds/Bradford airport so pretty near the country side. Love it. Though the odd smell of horse shit does still catch me out in summer

Me and the missus are having a stand at the "famous" car boot there in a fortnight. I've heard that its a pretty bizarre place, and the only location in the whole of Leeds where its acceptable to eat a burger at five o clock on a Sunday-morn.

oo do you mean right next to the airport? I went to one near Otely Chevin last year and picked up 2 Thriller LPs . Might go again considering some of the gems you can pick up- doubt there will be any MJ stuff, but im more searching for some Power Ranger stuff- seriously.

Here's a Yorkshire (or Hull at least) related question.

Has anyone here tried "Chip Spice"? It's a Hull thing.
In fact I've only ever found it in Hull.
Anyone from outside Hull has absolutely no idea what it is!

I used to love chip spice.

Haven't had it in years, then had some spicy chips one weekend I went back. Fucking awful! But that may just have been the takeaway I got them from.

Spicy chips with cheese is much better!

Yes! My girlfriends family is from Barton upon Humber, which is the other side of the river to Hull, and they have it in local takeaways! Its horrible stuff, and I have never seen it anywhere else. Christ knows what it is, but the locals adore it.

I think it was "American Chip Spice".

I doubt they even have it in America!
Odd stuff to say the least!

You were issued the stuff if you lived in Barton.

Glad I got out of that shit hole!

Yorkshire is for winners..... FACT!

This thread needs more McKee!

http://www.petemckee.com/acatalog/galleries.htm

Awesome artist who seems to have somehow bottled Yorkshire in some form, before smearing it all over some bloody canvas.

And yea, I've had chip spice.  It's nice, but just not right.  If I want my chips butchered by Yorkshire, I'll drown em in Hendersons.

I never realised it was a regional thing. Probably because since moving away, I've never had the desire to have it again!

People from Barnsley/Doncaster/South Yorkshire in general. Its like the dog of choice for a person from there, sorta in the same way that everyone wears flat caps, drinks bitter and smokes a pipe.

To add to the Hull thing, best chippy fish Ive ever had. Although the town stinks I really liked it there. Although from a Lancashire town I like most places Ive visited in Yorkshire and felt right at home in Hull. Definate North/South divide as opposed to a Pennine one.

You can't beat the Magpie Cafe in Whitby for Fish and Chips, I swear they're the best in the world. The Mrs wont eat them though because the fish has skin on, she doesn't know what she's missing! Mmmmmm...

Pacific Catch on Cottingham Road is EPIC.

However, being from the north east I have to back up "Your Funny Uncle" with his Magpie Cafe praise.
I've never been myself as its always rammed but I know it to be very good.

I you want amazing restraunt/pub Fish and Chips, The Burtree Inn near Darlington do a sensational F+C.

I can't believe I missed the chip spice discussion! I had it just last night on some potato wedges with my dinner (thats right - I have some at home). You actually have to ask for it not to be put on your chips in takeaways in Hull! And BQ - Pacific Catch does the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, anywhere. Fact.

I miss Chalplins in Hull (Mexican restaurant). Apparently its gone now but when I lived there I loved it. Tostado Gigante...1 deep fried tortilla filled with PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING THEY SERVED ON THE MENU

Oh and I miss 24 hour Jacksons for a flapjack to help me finish essays at 3 in the morning.

The 24 hour Jacko's at the end of my road is a blessing and a curse. It's great that I can pick food or cigs or whatever up at midnight on my way home from work, but when you're staggering home from a club at 3am and drunkenly decide that you need more booze it can be the final kick to the bollocks. It has turned mildly bad heads into full-on raging wine flu on many an occasion.

The martians are actually in Wigan

THE MARTIANS HAVE LANDED IN WIGAN
by
Bernard Wrigley

There are strange goings on in a quaint Northern town
Which the folk there are trying to keep quiet
It'd cause a sensation but they're playing it down
For they're frightened of starting a riot
'Cause they've pit men with arms that are thirty feet long
And their heads are as smooth as boiled eggs
The man who sells pies has got three great hig eyes
And the rugby league hooker is green with six legs

For the Martians have landed in Wigan
And they're wearing flat caps on their domes
And they've paid all their subs to the working men's clubs
'Cause Wigan reminds them of home

Now the Martians had lost all their bearings one night
'Cause the compass had gone up the spout
As they landed on t'slag heap the captain said, "Right
We're home lads, so lets' all pile out"
Well they soon realised that they'd made a mistake
So some digs for the night they all hooked
Where they'd trotters and hotpot and fresh Eccles cake
And when they tasted black puddings, those Martians were hook

For the Martians have landed in Wigan
And they're wearing flat caps on their domes
And they've paid all their subs to the working men's clubs
'Cause Wigan reminds them of home

Now the Martians play bingo and speak local lingo
Like, "Sithee, "and "Ey up owd flower"
From the pier every day you can go to Milky Way
Or a UFO trip round Blackpool Tower
So next time you're passing through Wigan, look out
And remember the things I have said
Beware of the ones who have clogs on their feet
And aerials stuck out the tops of their heads

For the Martians have landed in Wigan
And they're wearing flat caps on their domes
And they've paid all their subs to the working men's clubs
'Cause Wigan reminds them of home.

Your Funny Auntie is from Huddersfield, all her family still live there in Slaithwaite. So Yes, it's just you and the aliens

Hudderfield town centre is a shithole, apart from the numerous Merrie Englands, I wish York had one, the beef and onion sandwich is gorgeous  The countryside around Huddersfield is stunning though.

I love the ride over on the train from Manchester to Hull. The scenery is great but once you've done it a fair few times you end up reading your book.
But I have learned to spot the Galpharm stadium from several miles away so I know where I am.

I also know I'm in Leeds when I see the Co-operative funeral building from the train window.
Which basically says to me that Leeds is the place people go to die.
