OFF TOPIC I know, but as I am too busy to write any reviews this week, even though I have watched about five horrors since Sunday and also have now seen the much talked about PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.....Let me tell you what sad little incident excited me today.

Here I was, this morning puting the Christmas Dec's up my shop with my lovely staff.....thinking normal things when walking past the window...here in raining welsh town of Merthyr....was blinking Mike Tyson....yes Iron Mike....what the???????

I thought I was seeing things until I saw his crowd of Bodyguards and the manic sound of the press, clicking their cameras away...

Thought I would share that pointless news with you...now to bore the guys on the werid thread

  SUMMER'S MOON

There is a scene in the last season of Friends where its in the episode called The One with Phoebe's wedding, now do not quote me on that, but as all they all start with "the one" and its the wedding, then I take a wild guess and say that was the title, in which Joey as been given the duty to give the hippie away, decides to take the father role too far.  He calls her husband to be Mike into his bedroom and starts giving him a huge long speech about being part of the Family.  Its a cringe worthy act that Mike can only reply be asking "is that from a really bad gangster movie?" in which Joey replies with his usual dim witted style "Yes!"...

Now I am not losing my marbles by mentioning that scene as after watching the first five minutes of this horror, it was a memory that shot straight into my mind.  Summer Moon starts with a deep voice over, blabbering on about family, its a word that gets mentioned what seems over hundred times in a five minute dialogue that is worse than anything Joey could muster.  Also it seems that the makers of this film were so desperate to get that message across, that the word is spoken through out the film.  If we did not realise it before, then its spoken of again, the only thing that was missing is that a caption did not appear on the screen stating F-A-M-I-L-Y for the more thickest section of the audience.

Over on the wonderful Weird and Strange Thread, a long standing member DJ actually managed to watch an horror before I could and he posted his always reliable review.  He stated that the film was a "waste of 90 minutes of his life!".  Well its safe to say after watching it now, I know the man lied.  For simply its a horror that seemed longer than the 90 minutes.  In fact I put this film on at 8pm and by the time it finished, not only had Christmas came and went, but my kids had grown up, had children themselves and the likes of Rawlinson and Dante had taken over the Empire Forum and made Elab and Pigeon Army their bitches....

Ok! that was a bit far-fetched, but shezzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!! this film just dragged on and on and on and on and on.......

I should actually mention the film, well as the cover states in bold: Starring Ashley Greene from Twilight....now I have to admit "who?".  Before I offend any Twilight fans, I did watch that Vamp film, but I switched off after the half an hour mark.  If I wanted to see a girl fall in love with a good Bloodsucker then I would just chuck on my Buffy collection, as in my opinion that theme as been done and will never be bettered thanks to the wonderful writing of Josh Wheldon.

Here Ashley Greene from Twilight plays Summer who after the death of her mother, goes to the small town of Massey to try and find her estranged father.  She meets local guy Tom (Peter Mooney) where after he helps her from a run in with the law, she thanks him by bonking his brains out.  The next morning she tries to leave the house, only for Tom to be something like a demented freak, who grows a garden in the basement and which girls are the flowers!.

Yes you read that right..............girls are the flowers!............

Realising that she is a prisoner, the hardened teenager starts playing the game and is soon accepted into the family until a shocking secret emerges that threatens to tear the family apart!  Shezzzzzzzzeeeeee!!!!!!! even I'm repeating the family phase now!  That's three times I have mentioned family in one paragraph.....ok now make that four!

Anyway if you want to see a film that is filled with stupid characters and dumb moments then this is the one.  There is one laughable scene and the worse for me in any film this year in which Summer is standing Outside where her kidnapper is nursing a bad leg.....and she stands there.  Just stands there.  I actually looked in disbelief and then screamed at my television "RUN YOU STUPID BITCH" but she didn't and I shook my head in frustration.

Its a long movie, with stupid sub plots where nothing happens.  Honestly! it stays at a same pace through out and never borders the line of terror or suspense which its hard to believe as it touches on themes of Incest and Family Values....

Its not critical praise by saying this is NOT as bad as Walled In, but its nearly there.  A terrible horror that fails in every department, and if I hear the word Family or even type the word Family again this week, then I will blow I'm telling you.....I will blow!!!!!!!

OVERALL: A Family movie of a Family of Freaks, who believe in Family Values and Like to keep it in the
Family, despite the Family, not being a nice Family, and a Family you wish they could be much
more like the Walton Family, now that was a nice Family, not like this Family, and not like this
film which is not a nice Family film..................1 out of 5

   DYING BREED

Here I was only saying last week in another Australian Horror Coffin Rock that how all the recent down under horror films are all linked to the most popular of recent years Wolf Creek, when all of a sudden, yet another one lands in my DVD collection.

This time its no Director, no executive producer, no writer, but a star.  Yes Nathan Phillip who I last saw getting tortured by the mad man in the bush, is back, and clearly as no sense as he decides to go hiking again with a gang of friends.

This time in search of a long thought of extinct tiger that used to roam the Tasmanian wilderness.  Determined to find footage that the tiger is still alive, the gang of four head off where they run into a bunch of locals that do not seem quite right in the head.  Before you can yell "Wolf Creek! all over again" the gang are in trouble, where a long forgotten secret lives in the mountains, and a legacy that the locals do not want to ruin....

Oh I miss the days when we just had high school Virgins getting hacked to death by a beast in a mask.   At least those films were dumb and fun.  The hikers in peril as been done to death by now and you find yourself getting quite bored at what seems like an old theme that ripples through this film.

Like all recent Aussie Horrors, the film is lavished with beautiful images of the misty waters and landscapes, while the film carries on the tradition of slow build up, that tries so hard to create the tension of all good horror films.  Its just the stale script offers nothing new, and the feeling of dread does not come despite the attempts by the director.

The characters are also unlikeable, Phillips himself being the biggest idiot on show.  They do not quite scrape the barrel of doing stupid things as in most dumb horrors, but its hard to find any sympathy when they are so stupid for putting themselves in these positions.  Canny as well after the barn-storming performance by Irish Sam Parsonson in Coffin Rock we get another Irish in Aussie land with Mirrah Foulkes who does not quite match that level of performance.

Its a film that as come five years to late of a genre theme that is now going the way of J-Horror.  Fans are quite rightly fed up with the basic approach and Dying Breed fails to lighten the mood.  It plays serious at times then changes pace to a bit tongue and cheek, leaving the film with weak killings and a mixed tone, and hardcore horror fans left feeling frustrated...

OVERALL: Another Hikers in peril, when will they ever learn..............1.5 out of 5

Thanks Dante, really proud of that review and starring to enjoy writing them now, more than I should

Added some horrors to my collection....Vinyan and Reverb all be watched and reviewed soon!

Having a break tonight and currently on my telly is Public Enemies which I am not enjoying at all.  Quite bland and dull, and makes me wish I watched Heat instead!

 PARANORMAL ACTIVITY

                                                "Hold your breath....
                                                    make a wish......
                                                   count to three...
                                                   come with me
and You'll be......in a world of pure imagination.....
                                take a look.....and you see........into your imagination...

                                                  We'll begin.....with a spin....
travelling in the world of my creation....
what we see see will defy EXPLANATION..."

"PURE IMAGINATION" from The Film Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory

No I am not losing my marbles but if any song summed up what this horror has to offer, then I can not think of any other than the one sung by a certain Wonka.

As make no mistake about it, for a film that cries out for your Imagination to go into overdrive, then this is it.  A superb horror film that fully deserves all the plaudits it as been getting.

Just when you thought the camcorder horror theme had run its course, out comes this simple tale of boyfriend and girlfriend who upon hearing certain things that go bump in the night, set up a camera in their bedroom, to film what quite goes on, when their eyes are shut and into the world of sleep,  As each night passes, the noises become more severe, and soon the couples worst nightmares come true as they realise they in a position that they could never ever imagine........

I can not describe how after I have finished watching this film, that I totally adore it.  A wonderful simple premise that fills you with dread and stays long after the final credits roll.   Comparisons with the Blair Witch is of course fully justified.  In fact you can actually say that this is the sequel that the 1998 classic fully deserved.  But while  their overall themes are identical, I found Paranormal Activity outdoes the Witch for scares and settings.  Maybe its the constant theme of Hikers in peril, but while I love Blair and will always stick up for it and still say it deserves the 5 out of 5 I give it, watching it recently, I found myself having no sympathy for the three who ventured into the woods.  I mean they were just asking for it weren't they? They were warned enough before they left their car and lost their map.

Here its different.  We have a young couple, trapped in the confines of their home or in this case bedroom, with nowhere to go and no place to hide.  Those who snigger and say "Well they should just leave!" are clearly not paying enough attention to the script.  Even if they left, they will not get away, it gives a claustrophobic feel to the film that makes the viewer feel trapped like them.

Others will remark that nothing much happens!  But it does!  I never found myself bored once with the day scenes, as the entire premise had me hooked as I dreaded with them as night approaches.

Its them who criticise are those whose Imagination failed them.  As soon as the camera switched to night mode, my mind raced at what was to come.  Every shadow was transfixed into my mind, every creak hit my ear drums as the couple slept and I was their watching eye.  Each passing night becoming more freaky and scary.  If my tiny brain was thinking horrible things, it makes you realise why the mind that give us Jaws and E.T. was so scared of this film.

And what scares they are!  The -without spoiling- "Standing watching!" moment is my highlight of the year.  A scene so simple with design, that it left me uncomfortable, then of course the moment when the first big terror arrives and like her boyfriend, I was shocked and speechless......

Just to confuse everyone, the version I saw, was the original cut with the ending that as now been changed.  The ending here was abrupt and quite staggering, as all of the terror was off camera.  My first initial thought was "Is that it!", but then thoughts entered my mind and I realised it was perfect.  No explanation, just left with a feeling of "shit!" in a good way.  The new version as an ending which was thought of by the great man himself Steven Spielberg and its been described and I quote...."Weird, unsettling and very memorable!"....

If it is, then it can only enhance this film further.  The new Blair Witch? Heck! its safe to say that the bitch in the woods as a new contender for her throne.  Its that good.  A horror that surpasses all of 2009.  A genuine frightening camcorder horror flick that does everything you want and need in a horror.

OVERALL: Totally genuine scares and a frightening concept...a 2009 classic horror ......5 out of 5

And Like a good little horror fan, seen the new ending to Paranormal Activity and while its more in your face horror that will please horror fans of more brutal images, I love the simple basic ending of the original.

Still can not shake the film out of my system.  Outstanding is the word I can only describe!

Remember Dante when I said there are two films in year that miss my radar...The Insider is one of them

Thought Public Enemies was poor though, lacked any tension and thrills, just one long chase movie that is not nearly as good as The Untouchables never mind Heat.

Dante.....if you gonna watch Paranormal Activity, then please go in with an open mind.  Switch all your lights off, close the curtains, and prepare yourself so that you want to believe.  There are going to be many who as they did with the Blair Witch, will snigger and criticise, but every horror critic I have read are praising this film.  Its only as scary as you make it...and lucky for me, I got swept away.......still thinking "wow!" a couple of hours on!

             VINYAN                                                    Lost Souls

Still reeling from the wonderful Paranormal Activity, I hoped that this weird looking horror would keep up the thrill I had running through my veins.  Sadly, any hope I had vanished about half hour into a movie that is as lost as the parents involved.

Full of grieve from their death of their only son in the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, Mother Janet (Emmannuel Beart) believes she spots her dead son in a documentary about orphans living in the Burmese Jungle.  Despite not believing her claims, father Paul (Rufus Sewell) agrees to accompany her to the vast area in search of their lost one.  Its a trip that both will regret, as in the vast mysterious jungle awaits horror as death stalking every corner.....

First the positive.  The films premise is unsettling.  The film straight away is awash with dread and anger, it reminded me of "Don't Look Now!" in which we see a couple struggling with loss and clutching at straws, and that something bad is going to happen and we do not know what.  Its a great start, making us believe that this is going to be something special.

Even the surroundings gives the film some weight!  The actual area is more terrifying than any ghost or monster, as its an actual place, like time as stopped and no Rambo in sight to blow people up.  The quiet emptiness makes you realise that these two should not be where they are, but grieve and love is so strong, that no matter what, they want they son back no matter what the cost.

So we have the premise and setting, but sadly a mix that usually serves horror so well, fails to develop here.  The film quickly loses steam as the plot is so basic the reminder of the screen time is filled with surreal images that fail to entice or make a lot of sense.

It tries hard to be scary and weird. but missies the bite that makes horrors work.  Yes we as viewers are intrigued if what she spotted is her son, but if that is the only plot vice then how can the rest of the films running time fill out.

To say the film gets stretched is an under statement, as all we have is travel...surreal moment......travel.....surreal moment....by time we get to the eventual horror, its all over and you left with a "Is that it!"

Beart who I have not seen since Mission Impossible, gives her all, but her character and what she becomes is quite hard to swallow and so is the Husbands as the situation they find themselves in will draw sniggers than the gasps that was expected.

Its an horror that cries out of a waste.  A great idea, ruined by arty images and a strain of trying to be different and original but losing its way in the process.  Which is a shame as it as all the landmarks of being 2009's best horror.......

OVERALL: A basic concept, lost by a miss mash of images, a terrible waste of all involved.....1.5 out of 5

The movie Dying Breed may be about other things and not a very good one.

But is there a pie with a humongous eye in it in the movie?

Maybe they should have made a movie where the pie is the bad guy. A bad guy with one humongous eye (not LOTR Sauron) but an eye in a pie.

In regards to Paranormal Activity

IO9 had an interesting review also, that looked at he central pairing like an abusive relationship.

A murderering Pie!!!!!

They have done a Gingerdead Man, that was so popular it spawned a sequel.  Makes Jack Frost seem like a Hollywood Blockbuster.

Thanks for that link, that review put an interesting angle to the film. Still yet to shake it out of my system.  A really great horror that has in my view knocked the Blair Witch off its perch!  I have been raving about if for days, but sadly the friends who have seen it are saying its boring and crap.  Its like the summer of 1998 all over again with me defending a camacorder horror flick

Did anyone else notice the line, "A box of cornflakes is pretty fucking scary", in the word processor window behind the list?

I'm more intrigued by the next line " I should know, I've been up against a few in my time"

Forget Cold Prey and Dead Snow - breakfast cereals are on the march across the Nordic landscape!

That's the sort of writing you have to resort to when writing reviews of the Friday the 13th movies. I got tired of making jokes about teenagers getting throated.  I mean, Christ, how do you write reviews of 10 or so films all consisting of the same thing without repeating yourself?

I managed too

But then again I do not write reviews that are over 4 pages long
