With Mann's latest film causing quite a sensation, I felt compelled to revisit his 2004 effort Collateral.

For me it's one of my favourite films with one or two of my favourite scenes from the history of cinema - most notably the scene in which Max must convince Vincent's employers that he's legitimately lost the 'list'. Foxx’s transformation from being a bumbling rabbit in the headlights to stone cold ‘don’t fuck with me hitman’ is brilliantly played out.

I absolutely love the soundtrack (Rollin' Crumblin by Tom Rothrock is a right humdinger of a song, however, I could easily dismiss the Chris Cornell track), the performances are superb (Cruise and Foxx have never been better) and the hyper realistic look of the film is absolutely incredible.

I know many will say Heat is Mann's finest hour, but Collateral is hard to beat. I will never tire of this badboy!

I watched it on Film4 the other night and I really liked it. Awesome film, and I really liked seeing Cruise as a villian.

I love how brilliant Cruise is a cold blooded killer yet retaining that charm. He brings it to a darker place so well.

Mann's best film, far better than the greatly-overrated Heat. Jamie Foxx's best performance of his career, and as mentioned above, Cruise does a great job of subverting his usual persona. Brilliantly paced too, doesn't feel slow at all.

Totally agree. Not a minute is wasted, even when the film detours into other areas, like when they visit Foxx's mother in hospital, it still feels fast and tense. Brilliant movie, think I'll stick the DVD on some night, haven't watched it in ages.

That's one of my favourite scenes actually. It manages to feel really tense and unnerving while fleshing out Vincent's character slightly (but not too much). Brilliant stuff.

I can't believe I forgot to mention the digital cinematography, it's stunning. All those shots of late night LA are just beautiful.

I know what you mean. I love the way Vincent really turns on the charm when speaking to her, or the way he insists that Foxx brings flowers when visiting her. I gotta say, Cruise is superb in the movie, definitely one of his best performances, possibly the best. There are so many layers to Vincent yet we never really find out anything about him, except for his philosophies in life. It's wonderfully done.

Snake-Eye's two favourite tracks on the soundtrack - 'Island Limos' by James Newton Howard; a short but very calming and serene piece and 'Ready, Steady Go!' by Oakenfold.

Really enjoy the scene with Jada Pinkett Smith and Foxx where he bets her he can find a faster route to her office. The scene works really well thanks to its fantastic dialogue, performances and the stellar ‘Hands of Time’ track by Groove Armada.

Loved watching this film the second time around. It's the serenity of the scene which really helps set up the shitstorm Foxx's Max is about to face.

Also the scene where Vincent caps the two thieves who rob the briefcase from a kidnapped Max’s taxi. Slick as.

Brilliant movie! I watched it last night for the twentieth time or so, I own the soundtrack too.

the cinematography is superb. What I love about it most though is it's just a SIMPLE idea, brilliantly executed.

I really enjoyed this movie, and I thought Tom Cruise in particular did a great job as the jazz loving villian. Jamie Foxx is playing an against type here and he does great too. The use of lights, tones, and primary contrast give this movie a cool look. The ending is powerful too.

One of my favourite Mann films. The scenes between Foxx and Cruise in the cab are bliss and the action sequences are beautifully choreographed for such chaotic set peices.

Here's a movie pitch for you, The Transporter 4 directed by Michael Mann.

The cinematography is to die for, especially the cityscape by night, but as good as it is, it isn't a patch on The Last Of The Mohicans.

Mm.  I sometimes doubt if the comparisons are apt.  Yeah, two guys on opposite sides of society colliding, bonding, and one ultimately coming out on top - but not without being affected by the other.  That's a shared theme with both films.

But apart from that, I think they are two very different beasts.  Heat feels like an epic.  Indeed, I believe it's referred to as such.  A 'crime epic'.  By stark contrast, Collateral feels very intimate, almost 'indie' in its style.

I love both films.  Couldn't really choose.

Watching this now. The digital photography is gorgeous to look at, makes LA look amazing. Seriously awesome film. I love the shot of Cruise running full pelt towards the camera across the bridge after Max has stolen his briefcase, it's only a brief glimpse but it makes Vincent look a wolf chasing down his prey. I don't think anyone involved with Collateral has done anything better...
