Soul Power
Preceding The Rumble in The Jungle, the boxing matcht between Ali and Foreman, there`s gonna be a 3 day-music festival in Kinshasa, Zaire where the best African-American artists of soul music go back home (as they themselves call it) to performe together with famous African artists. Back to the roots. The clash between cultures and arfts, beautifully shot and edited.

We see how the organistation of the festival suffers from logistic problems but have to see to it that it goes through as planned, no matter what. Completely edited with footage from 1974, we see how the local African population enjoys the music and culutre, we see how (especially) Muhammed Ali thinks about Africa and America and see the greats of the world in sould music do their bit to make this unique festival into a succes.
Because of the constant presence of music, right from the first second, it`s really hard to keep still in your seat. The music is excellent and makes sure that appears a big smile on your face, even if you`re the world`s biggest sour face.
The only minor downside to is that we maybe not get to see much of the performances of the likes of B.B. King and James Brown. From the former just one song, even though we see him going through his set list prior to his performance, and from the latter just 3 songs.

The Masters of Cinema blu-ray release is nothing short of excellent. The picture quality is strong, with quite some grain in it (but not so much that is starts irritating) that makes sure that the transfer looks realistic. During the performances of B.B.King and James Brown the picture is so sharp that you almost feel the evening`s heat and the sweat from the artists almost pour our of your tv screen. One of the best blu-ray transfers I`ve seen this year.
This edition is a must for everybody, film and music lovers alike.

“SOUL POWER”
Director Jeffrey Levy Hinte 2009

September 1974, in Kinhasa, Zaire one of the most important events in African / American musical history took place. A three day festival featuring the cream of the USA’s soul, funk and latin music scene, alongside some of Africa’s finest artists. It was timed to coincide with the epic boxing match between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman. The fight was the main focus of the award winning documentary “When We Were Kings”, but now “Soul Power” puts together the “outtakes” of the concert which have been locked in the vaults for 34 years.

James Brown at the absolute peak of his career, South African singer Miriam Makeba, The Fania Allstars featuring Celia Cruz, Bill Withers, The Crusaders and BB.King, plus the people of Kinhasa themselves make this a festival movie to rate alongside ‘Wattstax’ and ‘Woodstock’.
