You need to update you list as

Robin B Hood is out on 25th May

Robo-Geisha on 7th June

and

Mulan on 21st June

ALSO IF YOU WANT TO CHECK WHEN NEW RELEASES ARE LISTED THEN USE HMV SITE AND TYPE CINEASIA in the search engine and it will give you a list of all releases.

Your help is appreciated, Morpeth, and by all means keep posting release updates, but you don't need to keep telling me to update the first post. I will get round to it eventually!

Think I'll wait until Cine Asia themselves confirm these last couple of releases, though. The release date on HMV (and other stores) may well be subject to change.
They have Rob(in) B Hood as the date 24th May, not the 25th, BTW (the 24th is a Monday - i.e. the normal day for new releases).

Fist of Legend was released on Monday, on DVD and BD.

If my mind isn't deceiving me, I think there was a TV advert for it, which seems odd for a 16 year old Hong Kong film...

Ok, update time...
Released since my last update:

Hard Revenge Milly / Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle (double feature)  - DVD
Raging Phoenix - DVD & BD
Tai-Chi Master - DVD

And forthcoming titles (as Morpeth noted):

29 - Robin-B-Hood (Rob B Hood) * - DVD & BD - 24th May 2010

30 - Robo-Geisha - DVD & BD - 7th June 2010

31 - Mulan - DVD & BD - 21st June 2010

Some further good news, as far as I'm concerned - Cine Asia have also confirmed they will release the Jackie Chan film Little Big Soldier in the UK, though there's no definite release date yet.

And a final bit of news - Bey Logan is now providing news updates for the Cine Asia site, and mentioned that he has recently recorded an audio commentary for the UK DVD of the Pang Brothers film Storm Warriors. This suggests, though doesn't 100% confirm, that Cine Asia will be the UK distributors of the film.

I was just scrolling down and about to comment on that. It is still JC though, so will pick it up sometime. Since you have probably seen it, is it any good?

Yeah, I've got the limited (extended) edition HK box with a pair of flip-flops and all sorts of other useless merchandise gubbins in it!

It's modern day Chan, so he's not at the height of his abilities, but you know what, it's alright. It's very lightweight and silly for the most part, but it's fairly good fun. And there's a cameo from Yuen Biao!

It should have kept it's original title Project BB, though (Project BaBy, you see!). Rob-B-Hood doesn't mean much, and the Americanised title Robin-B-Hood is giving a false impression that it's about a Robin Hood-type character.

Wow! That is worse than I imagined! Who ever thought that would be a good idea? I assume none of it has had any use

To me personally? No!
I can't remember exactly what's in the box (I'll check later), but the flip-flops (or in American "thongs" - Chan's character in the film is called Thongs) are either in some small kids size, or else are intended for our smaller-footed-on-average-I-suppose East Asian counterparts. Besides, who'd choose to wear them?
The Do Not Disturb sign is in Chinese text, so again, not a lot of use.

There was an even more limited version which also contained a "crystal pacifier" - a baby's dummy made of glass. Brilliant.

All in all, about as much use as the inflatable axe in the Kung Fu Hustle box, or the bottle opener / hammer ("not to be used as a hammer") in the Vengeance trilogy box....

At least those have some kind of cool novelty value though. A crystal pacifier and those flip flops are items which never should have been made.

I take it you realise i'm only saying this out of jealousy that I cant wear those glorious flip flops

Actually, I checked the box last night - the flip-flops are Euro size 43 (i.e. UK size 8 / 8.5) - bigger than I thought, but still too small for me!

The door sign does have some Eng text on it - it says "Rascal Inside". As a new father, I suppose I could get some use out of that, and the "Baby on board" cards for mine and the missus' cars... So not completely useless merch after all. (Not that I would!)

In the box, there's also a plastic wallety thing big enough to hold a credit card, with a picture of Louis Koo pulling a face on it (!), and a A4 sized film poster with a "birth certificate" on the reverse, which contains basic details about the DVD....

LOL -- you have the flip flops! That's just too funny! And you have some big feet, Gram, if Euro size 43 is too small for you.

I agree BTW -- it's a pretty good film. I'm trying to upgrade all my JC films to Blu as they come out (and as they come out in region B or all regions, as region A is, for the moment, useless to me) but I am more interested in upgrading his Chinese/HK films and the old ones rather than the new or his US films. I did recently upgrade "New Police Story" though, so I do make exceptions...

Gram -- or anybody else -- have you seen "Mulan"? Is that one to be recommended?

That's something I'd like to do, too, but I'm unlikely to do it any time soon. As they come out, I imagine there'll be the usual minefield to wander through of inferior versions, shorter international cuts etc.

Jackie Chan BDs available at present:

UK
The Forbidden Kingdom
The Myth
Rush Hour 3
The Shinjuku Incident

Little Big Soldier - DVD announced, BD likely, but no date yet
Robin-B-Hood - due out on Monday
Rush Hour trilogy / seperates of RH1 and RH2 - announced / no release date
The Spy Next Door - due out on 26th July

Germany
The Forbidden Kingdom - regular 1 disc version, and 2 disc CE
Der Mythos (The Myth)
New Police Story - has original English dub (not the Chan dub that was on the US DVD), but not English subs.
Shang-Hai Noon - doesn't appear to have any English subs
Shanghai Knights - doesn't appear to have any English subs
Rob-B-Hood - Das 30 Millionen Dollar Baby
Rush Hour 3
Stadt der Gewalt (Shinjuku Incident)
Spy Daddy (The Spy Next Door)

Little Big Soldier - due 15th November

USA
The Forbidden Kingdom - Region Free
The Legend of Drunken Master (Drunken Master 2) - Region Free, but it's the international cut, with dubbed-only audio, and the pic quality is apparently fairly poor.
New Police Story - Region Free
Rush Hour 3 - Region A
The Spy Next Door - Region A

Rush Hour trilogy / seperates of RH1 and RH2 - no release date
You can also expect US BD releases of Karate Kid and Little Big Soldier some time soon ish.

E. Asian
Accidental Spy - HK release is Region Free, has Canto audio and is presumably the longer cut.
Little Big Soldier - HK & Taiwanese versions are both Region A
The Myth - Taiwan release is Region Free
Police Story - HK version is Region A
Police Story II - HK version is Region A
Police Story III - HK version is Region A (all 3 PS films are apparently fairly poor transfers anyway...)
There is also a HK Police Story trilogy boxset, though all 3 PS films are apparently fairly poor transfers anyway...

Shinjuku Incident - Japan version is Region A

Going by that lot, the most appealing non-UK release is the HK of Accidental Spy. I wonder if they've fixed the dodgy a/r from the HK DVD that I have... (EDIT: some screenshots from the BD here)
Beyond that, the only one worth a look (IMO) would be New Police Story. The German version has no "Englisch Untertitels", so it would have to be the US release - I assume that's what you picked up, Pherly?

As for the UK releases
- I'll be picking up Shinjuku Incident on BD soon.
- I'm happy to wait for the UK BD of Little Big Soldier. I will be getting The Myth BD at some point (see elsewhere for my ranting on the necessity of double-dipping on this one).
- I'm not arsed about The Spy Next Door - I'd watch it, but I don't think I'll be buying it in any format.
- I'm loathe to double dip on Rob-B-Hood, when I have the aforementioned fancy box version, which is absolutely fine.
- I'm in no rush to upgrade Rush Hour 3. I guess I might eventually upgrade to the BD boxset, when the others in the franchise get their BD releases, but I'd get peanuts for the UK DVDs now, never mind in months and months time.
- Which leaves The Forbidden Kingdom. This is the one I'd be most likely to upgrade, and it apparently has a very good transfer. The US version is a 2-disc - anyone know if it's just the digital copy, or whether they get additional extras?

quote:

Gram -- or anybody else -- have you seen "Mulan"? Is that one to be recommended?

Haven't seen it. Timon pimped it for a while in this thread.

But in the end, the reviews were apparently some way short of overwhelming. From reviews I've read, it's pretty average. e.g. this one

Absolutely.
It's SPL (Sha Po Lang) by another name, in case you weren't aware. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478024/

Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, Sammo as a bad guy. If you like modern HK actioners, it's nigh on essential viewing.

That's right. I also have The Forbidden Kingdom (the UK version), The Shinjuku Incident and the HK release of Accidental Spy. I can't be bothered to upgrade the Rush Hour films either (or The Myth, Rob-B-Hood or any other relatively new film of his which I have on DVD in more than good enough quality anyway). And I have of course no interest in the US version of Drunken Master 2. Unfortunately, when, or if, that comes out in Asia it will most likely be locked to region A which the majority of BDs seem to be -- but in the meantime I might have gone multi region. I plan to, any day, I just have to send my BD player away. And in addition, the guarantee will be discontinued if I make it multi region. That's what's put me off doing it so far.

Rob-B-Hood (DVD & BD) was released last Monday.

After that, as mentioned above, there will be DVD & BD releases of Robo-Geisha (next Monday) and Mulan.

Cine Asia have announced their next batch of releases:

32 - Force of Five - DVD & BD - 5th July 2010

33 - The Storm Warriors - 19th July 2010 - Bey Logan has recorded a commentary track for this release!

34 - Invisible Target - DVD & BD - 2nd August 2010 - * This is a straight port of the Dragon Dynasty release.

Beyond these, Cine Asia have also secured the rights to release Drunken Master 1945 (more details to follow in the "Forthcoming Jackie Chan, Sammo, Yuen Biao films" thread!) and Chow Yun-Fat epic Confucious.

Since the last update, Robo-Geisha, Mulan and Force of Five have been released. Can't say I'm too thrilled about any of those, nor the forthcoming Storm Warriors...
The only one of the recent slew of Cine Asia releases on my radar at present is Invisible Target.

Cheers for these Morpeth. I'll update when Cine Asia officially announce them and provide artwork.

Connected doesn't sound too promising. The Legend (Fong Sai Yuk) is great, and hopefully it'll be a decent release, but I'll be sticking with my HK copy of t and its sequel, I think. Tsui Hark's Missing sounds awful.
So under normal circumstances The Sword with No Name (aka The Last Empress) would probably be the one I'd be most looking forward to, but having seen Shadowless Sword recently, I'm not sure how arsed I am about S. Korean swordplay films. Guess I'll wait and see on that one.

Why doesn't any of these look like any film you're intrested in? What about Mulan, it stars Jackie Chan's son.

I'd probably watch all of them, but don't think I'd pay good money for any of them, basically. I think in all cases, they're films that are trading on the success of genre forebears.

Robo-Geisha - Looks like another daft Machine Girl type gore-fest b-movie. Not really interested.

Mulan - got pretty much panned (see Timon's thread as he followed the film's progress). The presence of Jackie Chan's son means very little (same goes for films featuring Sammo's son, Timmy Hung), and even the admittedly cute Vicki Zhao can't make me fork out for this blind.

Force of Five - Got some rather dodgy reviews and described as a "kids film for adults". Plus I don't feel the need to pick up every sub-Ong Bak Thai film that comes out. And there seems to be plenty of 'em.

Storm Warriors - Got quite heavily panned, Twitch describing it as "two hours of monotonous, repetitive drivel"! And the Pang brothers aren't exactly a seal of quality. It's also supposed to be an inferior sequel to an already slightly dodgy original film that I haven't seen (The Storm Riders)...

A free copy came through the office of my uni mag office a few months ago, so I popped it on. Turfed it off to another staff member pretty quick - it's pretty bad. My review -

Fung wan II (Storm Warriors) (2009, Pang Chun & Pang, HKG) - 2/5
Perhaps one needs to be familiar with the original Fung wan film to get this (though this isn't a direct sequel, and IMDB tells me no characters bar Cloud and Wind return); in which case, it may be worth a revisit once I familiarise myself with the original. However, Storm Warriors is a film that starts off relatively promising and then descends into a tedious circle-jerk of Snyder-esque green-screen action and half-baked character relationships. When they want to be, the Pang brothers are exceptionally good visual directors - Re-Cycle is more than testament to that - and they do do a lot of good work here. The backdrops are often exquisite (the temple Cloud trains at with Nameless is breathtaking), the 300-style slow-fast-slow-fast action sequences actually work a number of times due to the way they're approached, a lot of the action is quite impressive (any battle with Lord Godless is astoundingly visceral and unbelievably entertaining), and Simon Yam and Nicholas Tse are hamtastic as the villains of the piece, the aforementioned Lord Godless and his slimy son Heart respectively. However, a bad translation only serves to exacerbate what is already a clunky script (exposition is repeated over and over and over again in case you missed it the first 500 times), and the relationships between the characters are barely fleshed-out (certainly, the connection between Cloud and Wind is lacklustre most times, and don't even get me started on the informed relationships between Cloud and Chu Chu or Wind and Second Dream or Lord Wicked and Lord Godless). Then there's the way the MacGuffin - the Dragon Bone, which apparently grants the Chinese royalty their power or something - is treated as some kind of convenient artifact to pull out when the narrative requires teh dramaz, the way Heart just randomly disappears halfway through the film, the eye-rollingly dull final forty minutes, and the bland acting on display from the majority of the leads. I would watch the first hour again for the action scenes, but after that, no more. No more.

Sounds a charm, PA! It's firmly in the "don't bother" slot of my branium now.

Since last update, said Storm Warriors film has been released.
