Quite a decent list in terms of the mix of games and time periods. Some new games are a bit high up ... but it's really hard to get the order right. Did people vote in for this? I missed it. A lot of great games in there and a lot of my favourite all time games.

No Crysis. Not surprising to be honest. It's undoubtadly one of the greatest games ever made, but because of it's obsurdly high specs and PC only format no-one ever played it! It won every award going for it in 2007!

What a crappy list....i mean i'm glad goldeneye and street fighter 2 were in the top 10.....but ocarina of time number 8?!!! nonsense.  Any list that has mario kart, twilight princess, shenmue, and resident evil outside of its top 10 is a list not worth looking at.

It was never going to please everyone, but I would not let COD anyway near the top 20.

Ocarina of Time for me is the greatest game as it has a load of awesome memories attached to it.
Can't argue with SMW as it truly is a spectacular game. However the original deserves a top 10 or at least top 20.

most of those games are on there for sheer nostalgia, not because they are the 'greatest' and MGS wasn't even in the top 10! and you put MGS2 in the list and left 3 out!! what's going on!

I agree with the flamers, reverence of some games has led to their high-placing when their sequels are so deserving of better recognition, GOW, MGS and Ocarina being the main examples. But, if it was voted for by the mindless, dew-eyed nostalgists, I can't complain. I can't help but feel lists were composed by select groups of people, well read (or gamed) and not afraid to avoid pandering we might get something unpredicatable and interesting.

Aaargh, sorry for sounding like a miserable jerk. I just expected this to be a little more... unique??

Still, its well written and all of that. Well done Empire. NOT well done us...

When Empire reviewed GoldenEye 007 back in the day, we only gave it four stars because it was unthinkable that James Bond could die.

Actually, you only gave it two stars. For shame.

What a terrible list, it reeks of PC gamers

I cant believe games like Lylat wars, mass effect, the origianl super mario bros and super mario bros 3 didnt even make the cut

Dam, empire should have constructed the list themselves

Wanna see a good top 100?

Lack of Grim Fandango in the top 50 makes Olaf cry. But other than that, pretty good list I thought - a few favourites (Super Mario Kart in the top 20 was a pleasant surprise) along with a few for me to check out (will have to hunt down Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem soon). Champ Man 2001 is the best one though, obv...

I tried to groan, Help! Help! But the tone that came out was that of polite conversation.

Good list although surprised some games didn't make the cut. Also shocked at some people's reaction towards your top 100, at the end of the day, WE, the readers, voted for it. Some people should really pipe it down and simply turn the page on their anger.

No Everquest, I am surprised. A better, more involved game than WoW ever is going to be which is basically a dumbed down version of EQ.

Wait a minute I just realised, where are all of the Pokemon games? There's not one on the list! Those games were the foundation of my childhood. When will the grown-ups learn that there was a reason they were so popular; they were fucking good!

See, this is why I hate lists.

Crash is 11% better than Mario and FF7 should be 3.5 places higher than Goldeneye.

Super Mario World?
Greatest game of all time?

There is something badly wrong with you people...

The Empire communities baffling tastes aside, this was a really cool list.
Reminded me of a lot of games I'd forgotten about.
Can still remember the first time I saw Another World - me and my mates were stunned by how good it looked, how realistically the characters moved and how smooth the animation was.
Hard to believe it was only 18 years ago when you look at how much things have advanced.
I wonder what the me of 18 years ago would think if someone had shown me something like Killzone 2 or Heavy Rain, or told me that one day there would be an entire virtual world where 12 million people around the planet could pretend to be elves (or big cow creatures) on this giant international network thing.
I do, however, know for a fact that if someone had told me that people would still love games about short, fat, Italian plumbers then I would have laughed scornfully, and gone, "No way. Now you're just taking the piss. People will have much more taste in the future."

Call of Duty 4 that high!! Fuck. Right. Off. For a start you shouldn't describe a single player as 'flawless' when it has constantly re-spawning enemies. One of the most overrated games ever made.

A good list if they're not in the order they're presented in.  I mean, Metroid Prime is one of the greatest experiences of my life and its 40 something in the list ffs.

Going to have to pull you up on the "urban myth" cow level on Diablo 2.  It's real and I've been there. If I remember it's Wirt's leg and a tome of town portal in the Horadric cube.  Those cows are belligerent and numerous.

Final Fantasy VII was on three discs, not four. And who the hell wrote the phrase "disappointment that was Mario Kart 64"? Someone who, presumably, has never played a Mario Kart game? Stood up until the Wii version that game! Still, a fairly good list apart from the above mentioned absenses from the early PSX titles and the shockingly low position of Sonic.

And yes, Super Mario World is the best game ever.

No Ass Creed? No Time Splitters? No Lego Star Wars? NO SAN ANDREAS?? That wasn't a list of the greatest games ever, that was a cheerful jaunt down memory lane- an awful lot of rose tinted nostalgia. I respect the classics, but loads of those games have since been remade and bettered, or the genre they were tackling has been handled more efficiently since. And how many fucking Mario games were on there? Mario's cool, but running about as a fat italian is only fun for so long I'm tempted to say...

I voted my 5 in, and for sure know gears of war, resident evil, cod4, and zelda (oot) were on there. Madden however was not, which in all respect is the best sports game out there, better then fifa and sensible soccer. Either way, changes need are to put halo2 in the spot of halo, and halo is the spot of halo 3 and knock halo3 off the list. Super mario kart 64 is definetly better then super mario kart and GTA IV is a horrible game which i spent 18 hours straight playing doing the same routine for every knew person you meet. Go kill someone, go drive someone somewhere, motorcycle chase, go steal something, off the guy you work for. dumb. San Andreas is the best GTA. Being resident evil is my favourite gaming franchise, I'm happy with the placement of 1, 2, and 4. Games Missing: Mortal Kombat, Madden, Gran Turismo, Rainbow 6, Warcraft 2!

This of course is all MY opinion, the list isnt wrong nor is no one elses opinion. Take it how you want it, and let me know if you beg to differ. Thanks Folks!

I came here ready to tell you off again Empire (even though it was out of your hands) for leaving out Mario Kart 64 and for Ocarina not being no. 1, but then I saw SMW was no. 1 and I was absolutely delighted! It was on my ballot, and I absolutely love that game! I have it on Game Boy Advance which has it's own shelf in the bathroom next to the toilet, so I literally play it 5 times a day. My goal is to complete it 100% without dying once! In fact, I'm off to play it now!

Super Mario World is apparently greater than Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros 3?

CoD4 is probably my favourite current gen game and one of my favourite FPS, but better than Goldeneye and Half Life 2? I'm not too sure. One thing is for sure is that Halo doesn't deserve to be higher than Half Life 2 and BioShock shouldn't even be in the list.
