Watched it for the first time today: Oliver Stone`s 3,5 hour epic on the biggest scandal ever in American politics: Watergate. Stone expects his audience to have a certain knowledge of what happened and that you know post-war American history. In the beginning it`s told briefly, the rest of the film is told by flashbacks and flashforwards. This way we get to see what made Richard Nixon into the person he became through his strict religious upbringing, his early political carreer and how he hit rock bottom after the election defeat to JFK in 1960. Slowly but surely (Stone takes with 3,5 hours takes his time) Stone works towards the climax: the impeachment of Nixon`s precidency. The 3,5 hours that the film is long might`ve or could`ve been a bit shorter, some scenes could`ve been cut a bit. But nowhere this gets dragging or boring. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant as Nixon and the cast of the supporting roles is great as well, with an excellent performance by James Woods and a small one by Ed Harris. The mixing of real archival footage with film images and the use of the real speeches as Nixon made them, spoken by Hopkins and the use of actual locations gives you a great feel of realism. The result might not be as great as Stone`s ultimate masterpiece JFK, but it is really good nonetheless. 8,5/10
