I suppose I'll start: One of my best friends' favourite film is Derailed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derailed)
Any films she might like?

Well if she likes Derailed then she needs to start all over again

i don't really remember much about it - one of those films that is fine to watch but not memorable in any way. Can you tell us if she likes the film because of the actors or just because she likes the whole blackmail plot?

Well I think the arthouse movies are out, and independent film. I'd say blockbusters like Iron Man? Who knows if she does like Derailed maybe Sleeping With the Enemy, Erin Brockovich, The Thomas Crown Affair, Unfaithful, Duplicity...

Aren't 'great' and 'bad' and 'average' purely subjective terms though? You or I can't define what's a great film for someone else, surely?

If someone doesn't like movies, they probably don't watch too many movies, maybe they read more.
Should we recommend books instead of movies?

I get what the thread is trying to do.

If someone likes Face/Off, they should watch Hard Boiled.

If someone likes The Mummy, they should watch Raiders of the Lost Ark (duh).

If someone likes Disturbia, they should watch Rear Window.

If someone likes Epic Movie, they should be shot.

But what what I'm asking is, would you say if someone likes Raiders Of The Lost Ark they should watch The Mummy? Or if somebody likes Rear Window they should watch Disturbia?

This is not what the thread is about, anyway. What I am trying to do is give people I know recs which they might enjoy based on their current taste.

If you like X then you should watch X2 but avoid X3.

It works for:

X-Men
The Terminator
Star Wars
Robocop
Lethal Weapon
Mad Max
Austin Powers
Alien
Spider-Man
Batman
Beverly Hills Cop
Blade
The Godfather
Pirates of the Caribbean
Scream
The Matrix
Fellowship of the Ring

There are exceptions, like:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Back to the Future
A Fistful of Dollars
The Evil Dead

I haven't even watched the 2nd one although I liked the first.

And leave it without a closure?
Anyway, that's not the point of this thread. My point is recommending good films based upon people's taste in average films.

That's what I was trying to ask you at the start of this thread - how do you define a good movie as opposed to an average movie? Rotten Tomatoes? Imdb? It's purely subjective.

That said, any Micheal Bay fans should watch all of John Woo's HK output.

Obviously taste is subjective, but this thread asks how people can be introduced into serious film lover's world. Whatever is popular here is more likely (though not certain) to be good than an average film that came out last week. I am aware that sounds snobby, but there is a reason why some films are more liked and respected here (or in any other serious film lover's place).

I really don't think you can recommend Let The Right One In to someone who enjoyed Twilight, and vice versa. The only thing they have in common is vampires, which, in this case, does not mean you can compare the two films on anything other than their vampiric elements - which differ completely anyway!
