I felt the movie was a cliche of itself.

I felt the movie was a cliche of itself.

SPOILERS for those who haven't seen this
I really enjoy this movie. I like the quotes too.
I can't be a grandmother, I'm too young to be a grandmother. I went to woodstock for chrissake, I peed in a field.
I just told him that's what little dudes do.
Why do the women in this house make all the men want to leave?
Just the characters are good. There's the dad Gil (Steve Martin) who would like his son to be less of a neurotic mess and more like a normal kid, in addition he has a 1 year-old who beats his head against things, and a young daughter whose tougher than his son. His new boss is younger than he is. The supportive wife (Mary Steenburgen). The perfectionist dad (Rick Moranis) whose teaching his 4 year old Japanese, and anything else academic. His wife (Harely Jane Kozak) the closet junk food addict, exercise freak, whose child acts like she's 40. The grandfather who is a bit hard on his son (Jason Robards) whose youngest son (Tom Hulce) is an immature, gambling addict screwup with an interracial young son named Cool. Then there's the sister of Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest, whose young son (Joaquin Phoenix) has a secret addiction to porn movies. A daughter whose pregnant at 17 (Martha Plimpton) by her goofy hubby Todd (Keanu Reeves). Then there's the great grandmother who plays nintendo and sits in the neighbor's car. It's a cast of fun characters, some heartfelt moments, it's not cliched at all. It's chaotic. There's lots of little touches in this film. Such as Gil dressing up as a cowboy for his sons birthday when the real Cowboy Dan couldn't make it, complete with riding a horse and making balloon animals. The play at the end, the smarty pants 4 year old knocking her dad out when he teaches her karate, the freakout at the restaurant, any scene the Keanu's in is always funny (he still acts like Ted here) the race. Anyway, an enjoyable movie, the characters make it good.
Every family has a nut in it and a perfectionist. 4/5
