As I've mentioned before, a 'workprint' of THE PUNISHER exists and so I searched and found these deleted scenes -

Deleted Opening Scene Part One (with temp music from LETHAL WEAPON!)

Deleted Opening Scene Part Two - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LsgoNvBZbE

Great find Snake! Interesting to watch that lost footage. The film could have done with the deleted opening scenes as it explains how Castle came to be the Punisher.Maybe they thought it was too long and wanted to just cut straight to the action? Kinda unbelievable that Castle survived the car explosion though. He was standing right next to it before it blew sky high!

That's very true darth - another bit of trivia for you - did you know that Mel Gibson's brother Donal is in THE PUNISHER? He plays one of Gianni Franco's goons who gets wasted at the docks by the Yakuza whilst waiting for the French Drug Smugglers -

total awesomeness.

the thomas jane verion was ok to me. it could have been better. i tend to be a truist when it comes to marvel comics characters. even though they took parts of the story from an official comic storyline, i felt it was lacking.

but i really did like warzone. it was enjoyable. the violence in that one was great i thought.

Saw this for 4 quid, and been very tempted to get it. I found the Thomas Jane version left a bad taste in my mouth, what with his whole family being slaughtered and Travolta's hideous hair/acting combo, but I think this looked more interesting.

Is it different enough from the other version to justify giving it a try?

And does anyone remember the ps2/xbox/GC game from 2005? Ranks up there with Arkham Asylum as one of the most well-conceived and faithful comic book adaptations.

The Jane version was all over the place tonally, plus it felt like they were holding back on the violence to launch a franchise.

My thoughts exactly. I know that the '89 Lundgren version was far from a perfect (Punisher) film but at least it was a good violent actioner. I'm yet to see 'War Zone' - heard a lot of bad things about it ('Schumacher-style' neon-lighting...?)

Dude, you need to watch it. It's by no means a masterpiece, but is hell of a fun action movie, and gratuitously violent too!

Eh? Doesnt a guy getting rings torn off his lip count as violent? What about when Castle stuck a knife through a goons chin and through his mouth? Hardly PG material was it? It was one of the most violent mainstream movies of the decade!

War Zone is an excellent actioner. It has its own visual style, but the violence is great, Stevenson is a bad ass, and McNulty is having the time of his life.

So much fun.

Might give it a go.

As distatestful as I found the Castle-family slaughter in the Jane version, it was very cathartic seeing him bring it to the scum

Anyone else think this pic is incredibly badass? I love the mask.

What really ruined the Jane version of The Punisher was when he was making anonymous calls to tell the villain his wife was having an affair, this is The Punisher not Coronation Street!
The tone was all over the place, at least Warzone, as deeply flawed as it is, knows what it wants to be. As for the neon sets, yeah it does make Warzone seem extremely cheap but then it was low budget. Stevenson was a great Punisher though, I'm still hoping to see Michael Pare become Castle sometime.

I love neon sets think someone mentioned schumacher's use of neon in Batman Forever, but I reckon the fight between Dick Grayson and the neon/day-glow gang is one of the only parts that still holds up well.

Ordered this little beauty the other day. Had it first time around for my ps2 and absolutely loved it, and with my renewed interest in the character, I thought why not

Thoroughly recommend it.

I'm still unsure whether or not to order War Zone off Amazon. It looks gross, but Stevenson looks spot-on, and the costume's much better than Jane's.

Is it worth four quid?

HELL YES! I think it's better than the Tom Jane version.

Played the game last year, was OK, but soon tired of it.

The Tom Jane film wasn't too bad. He looked good alright:

Whoa, that surprises me, I remember playing it over and over, unlocking everything over a few months.

Still waiting for my xbox version to arrive, grrrrr

I actually quite liked them.  Thought the classical dance moments intercut with the Russian brawl was really cool.

"Frank, are you all right?"

"I'm fine."  [Points to dead Russian]  " He's not." [Frank collapses]

Am I remembering that right?  Always made me chuckle.

One of the most annoying things for me was the token godawful hard rock tune that played over the end credits

I think the Jane version was going for broad box office appeal, watering down the character to attract non-fans, the fight with Kevin Nash's sailor was cringe worthy

I have to respectfully disagree there, dude. The fight with the Russian was very well staged, very funny, and, I think, very true to the scene as it appeared in the comic book, though I think he scalds him with a hot pizza in the book, rather than a pan of water.

Yeah, I hated that comic incarnation though, much preferring Punisher Max.

Well I'm interested in reading some of ol' Frank's comics, only really read bits and pieces. Would you recommend starting with the MAX line?

Anyone seen Thomas Jane in Hung on Channel 4? It's a great show, refreshingly short for a US drama. Highly recommend it.

I find it strange when these cross-over references happen in comic-book films (not that there's probably been too many). I remember the 'Superman' line in the Spiderman film and thought it was just dumb. Couldn't they just refer to a hero from the same universe - how hard could it be?

Wasn't it a dig though? Saying that Superman was a fictional character in this universe.

Hmm, that gives me an idea ...

Who'd win in a fight: Superman or the Punisher? My money's on ol' Frank Castle.

Not really about any film version of THE PUNISHER but I snared this handsome little chap last month -

It woulda been cool to see an action figure based on the '89 Lundgren version.

I got that figure for 2.99 in the local Smyth's here in Newry, it has an old school charm.
