Artificial hearts, ultraviolence, gun toting strippers, public sex, living severed heads, lots of boobies, Corey Haim's mullet...

What an utterly barking, insanely stupid, thoroughly entertaining film.

It's also constantly just ever so close to crossing the line into unbelievable racism and sexism, but somehow manages to stay the right side. It's just too willfully brainless to really offend. Statham is the powerhouse of the film, game for pretty much anything and whilst playing it straight is clearly aware of the silliness of it all. He's just having a whale of a time wreaking as much havoc as possible. Amy Smart is a very game girl, throwing herself into some thorughly ridiculous and potentially humililating circumstances with abandon..

It's not quite as much fun as the first one, mostly because the rush of that one has worn off somewhat, but it's still far more fun than it has any right to be.  A third one may well be pushing it, but there's lfe in this mad dog yet.

The one ting I love about waching action movie is to see how insane they can be. Just like the first one it did not dissapoint, nice little plot to this one with alot more insanity than the first film doubled.

not a film to be watched with the parents!!

This is a flick for the boys, everything they want is in it.  but in saying that, girls this is a great laugh.

I have not laughed so much and be sure to stay to the end of the credits!!  Lots of action, and lots of very unPC language to annoy the censors.  Riot of a film, making for an enjoyable night out

Loved it, but, not as good as the first.  The first film was nuts, but also had a logical progression from point to point and built to a climax.  This was just crazy after crazy with a lot of coincidence to tie it together.  The ending just seem to come because they had to end at some point and it didn't really work for me.
The talkshow cut-away I was not a fan of, as for me, it changed the character of Chev and the premise of the film.  That could just be me though.

If films are scored for pure enjoyment... 5/5

Haven't laughed so much at something so wrong for ages. Really hysterical stuff

I would have loved to see the producers face when he watched the final cut of this film. Good actors, whom i like, and a reasonable tale for a plot.
This ranks as one, maybe the, of the worst films i have ever watched. A true bag of shite, dangleberry's scratched from the arse of satan himself. A truely terrible film in every imaginable way. Avoid at all costs!!!!!!

Just to temper my earlier criticism of the film just a bit, I do think respect is due to The Stath for being willing to do absolutely anything required of him in his films. But I'm also one of the 4 or 5 people who really, really likes Revolver and consider it the Mullholland Drive of the gangster genre, with a pretty underrated screen presence thing emanating from the Jaseter. So what the hell do I know?

While undoubtedly all over the shop, you get the feeling that, like with the first film, that is kind of the point. Statham is always watchable, and really embraces the role with both hands once more - it's fair to say the man earns every penny of that pay cheque. Chev Chelios is a fun part, and he plays it with his usual flippant, quip-ridden style. A little more restraint from the directors and this could've been even more of a good time, but something tells me these guys wouldn't know subtlety if it beat them to within an inch of their life

Had me laughing and wincing in all the right places. Great fun and thank God it's the most un-pc film in ages. It was like a breath of fresh air. These Crank films are just insane. Geri Halliwell as his mum? Lol, WTF? Loved seeing Corey Haim on the big screen too. The closest flicks to live action GTA movies there is!!

Just watched it and wasn't very impressed. Kind of like a Takashi Miike film without the subtlety and humour.

Watching it was like watching a student film made by a bunch of arsehole fratboys to be honest.

Could've been better but still very entertaining. Ridiculously offensive and violent just like the last and the Stath still shines. Amy Smart is sooo hot but why is she in this film? Otherwise, Crank 3 should be interesting...

Ok - let's get this out of the way. This film is so bad it's actually good! If you've seen Crank then it's basically more of the same except even more outrageous! I found myself smiling and laughing through the whole thing even though it's basically just nonsense. But that's kind of the point isn't it? Dodgy accent aside I actually thought the flash back bit to Chev's childhood was brilliant - hilarious! But the Godzilla-like battle scene was just pointless and the reanimated head was a step too far (if that's possible with the Crank films). 2 people walked out of the cinema when I was there but what did they think they were going to see exactly!??

Its intense! Best film iv seen in ages. The editing and way it was shot is totally refreshing to see in the cinema!

Why was it left out of the latest EMPIRE issue? Think it deserves another star from the critc! Please Helen :-) Pretty Please and then put it in the next issue before it leaves the cinema for good!

If you like intense action mixed with skate video style filming, this is the film for you! Also stupidly funny!

A film of two halves... - 23/4/2009 9:35:38 PM

Slight spoilers.....

Loved the first film and saw this one a couple of days ago.

What surprises me by the reviews so far is that the huge divide in quality between the 1st half of the film and the 2nd half isn't really mentioned.

The 1st half is fantastic fun. The emphasis is completely on "The Stath" doing his thing. It's brilliant, full of adrenaline, and has several laugh-out-loud moments.

Once the hilarious sex-scene is out of the way, proceedings take a huge downturn.

Boring support characters get more of a look-in (bad move), a flash-back to Chev's childhood just doesn't work, and the (stop-motion ?) animated fight sequence was crap and silly.
There are other problems with the 2nd-half. In general it just went way OTT in a fashion that was un-focused & not very entertaining or funny.

3 stars is about right overall (if the whole film was like the 2nd-half though I would have given it 1.5 stars).

I'm well aware that this series is all about being over the top and silly, and the first film did that very well whilst managing to stay entertaining all the way through (ran out of steam a bit towards the end, but nothing too drastic).

The sequel for me though, has 2 very distinct halves :
The first extremely entertaining half, and the 2nd dull "what were they thinking ?" half....

Out of interest, is there anyone who preferred the 2nd-half of the film to the 1st-half ?

Must admit I could have done without Geri Halliwell and that Godzilla bit, and I'm not sure the world needs a third Crank film, but overall I really enjoyed this. Statham throws himself into the film with gusto in the kind of role I can't imagine any other star even considering playing (I can't think theres many films where the lead character sticks a shotgun up a fat guys arse ), and overall its so silly it manages to get through to the end without outliving its welcome.

I was left breathless. Crank is back 'n' fully loaded. High Voltage is even better than the original. I really enjoyed it. The film is perfect: funny, violent, sexy and thrilling. Definitely not for the faint of heart. And, it has that Pulp Fiction-ish air, y'know, extreme violence + sex + drugs + comedy = great movie. Chev Chelios, the anti-hero we needed, is the new John Rambo. Verdict: One of the most entertaining, freak out, spectacle in years. This couldn't like me more. Highly recommendable. A Great Movie.

This is a very unimpressive and wholly unnecessary sequel. Let's face it, the original only really had one thing going for it and that was its breathless pace, spurred on by Chelios' constant need to seek adrenaline. Since Chelios' ongoing aim is now to 'recharge' his artificial heart, the reason for keeping the pace up is dull and contrived. Once you've seen someone give themself an electric shock by car battery/pylon/taser once, you've seen it a million times. Even the makers got bored of finding ways for him to 'recharge', settling on a new battery for his heart halfway through the film. The only inventive 'recharge' they could come up with was the static electricity at the races skit though that ultimately ends up being little more than an excuse to remake the infamous public sex scene of the original.

With the underlying urgency of the narrative seemingly gone, all we're left with is an endless parade of gunfights, cliched racism, bullet-holed silicon implants and no real sense of tension whatsoever. Even the film's surreal elements - clearly added in an attempt to look cool - fall flat when it becomes apparent they are utterly meaningless (just what was the point of the Godzilla homage?). Really, the only things this film has in its favour is its Tony Scott-on-steroids editing and the charisma of Jason Statham.

I left with the impression that the directors simply sat in a room with a group of Nuts-reading 15-year olds and asked them what they'd like to see in a no-holds-barred action film. The original wasn't perfect by any means but at least it was relatively consistent and focused. This is neither.

I'm all for a bit of mindless entertainment but this was pure shite. I was totally bored after about 10 minutes.  You may ask..........why did you go and see it? Well, I'll tell ya..........I like a good action movie, but then I was raised on Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and the like.  Crap like this is just what modern gimp directors deem to be stylish and imaginative.  In reality it's nothing more than computer game influenced shite.  Absolute crap in the extreme.

Yes it was mindless, yes it was offensive, yes it was crazily stupid.... but man did I enjoy it! Very very very funny in parts (dog collar, godzilla) whilst just as crazy as it needs to be the rest of the time, Statham is great and even though Crank 3 may be pushing it, I'm intrigued as to do what they will do next....

As my gran used to say "It may be shite but it's entertaining shite". And much like the first film this is totally ridiculous but it's so much fun. Heres hoping for Crank 3.

One of the best films of the year.

I suspect the Nuts and Zoo crowd would have more fun watching Fast and Furious. Crank 2 may have been too "unrealisitc" for them.
