But it's always rattled me nonetheless. A valid reaction or just wounded patriotism?

Well the Yanks did fuck up at the Kesserine Pass and only had Monty to thank for saving their's and the whole Tunisian campaign due to his quick thinking. But does that even get a cursory mention in Tunisian Victory? Does it bollocks.

A valid reaction DC.

Am I the only one who got these two mixed up the first time around?

 vs

The first guy is the soldier they capture and release and the second one is the soldier who kills Mellish with his knife. When I first saw the film I thought "Fuck, they shouldn't have let him go!". Only later it occured to me that they are two different gyus.

I saw SPR at the cinema about five times - Amazing! BLACK HAWK DOWN is probably in my own Top Five War Movies - Great Film.

I saw this while on holiday in Canada on the big screen, and that opening battle just blew me away, from that point on you knew you where in for a brilliant war movie.Top Ten for me are:
1/Apocalypse Now
2/Full Metal Jacket
3/The Thin Red Line
4/Platoon
5/Paths Of Glory
6/Daz Boat
7/Saving Private Ryan
8/Black Hawk Down
9/Born On The Forth Of July
10/Mash.

That is mental.  I used to think it was such a big part in the story and now it is just a small detail.

The guy they let go is the one who shoots Miller and then gets shot by Upham, i didnt realise people thought he was the guy who knifed Mellish, they dont look alike at all aside from the shaved head

If only we knew what Monty said to his tank crew before the battle?

Actually, I've always taken the reference to Monty in SPR as just that - Monty's fuck-up- rather than any slight on the other Allied forces.  And lets face it, while excelling in the North African/Italian campaigns, Monty didn't exactly come out of the NW European theatre smelling of roses - Market Garden was a disaster.

well, my blu-ray copy FINALLY arrived today (along mitt PAN'S LABYRINTH)! I've added it to an already huge stack of unopened blu-rays - gonna have to start watching 'em soon!

Don't care what anyone says - this is still the greatest war movie ever made. End of.

Itís a sight to behold on Blu Ray Snake, enjoy! A lot of people complained upon its release because it looks aged and grainy. Obviously not realising that BDís are supposed to represent directors intention as closely as possible and not make everything like a GC cut scene! Well wide of the mark, itís beautiful in HD. Film like, finely detailed and grittyÖ as it should be. And while Iíve not seen all of them, Iím with you in as much as saying itís certainly the best war film Iíve ever seen. Apocalypse Now and The Thin Red Line are snapping at its heels mindÖ but itís still my personal favourite.

Usually when it comes to anything world war 2, I start to get bored easily. This film however is amazing. Of course after watching the Omaha beach scene at the start it's impossible to stop watching.

And I totally agree with Snake-Eyes, Jackson the cold as ice sniper is one of my fave characters too. He racks up some serious kills by the end!

I just watched the blu-ray - it looks and sounds STUNNING. This was one of Steven Spielberg's last Masterpieces.

True as a director he has not made any thing up to the standards of this I will say that Band of Brothers is just as good but he produced that.

This film is (along with RAIDERS) my favourite Spielberg. I re-watched the trailer for TINTIN and in all seriousness.... WHAT THE F**K? I know Steven can be very versatile in his choice of projects but he truly has lost his way of late.

Agree the Tintin film does not look great but they did get the Dog looking great not a fan of that type of film making. Sadly Spielberg who is one of my Favourite directors has lost it Indy 4 was a huge disappointment as was the Pacific again he prouduced. Saving Private Ryan was his last great film.

The last 45 minutes of Saving Private Ryan was filmed about a mile and half away from where I live. Just sayin'...

It was. I remember a P-51 plane flying all around Hatfield all day. Kinda neat.

I believe Spielberg and Hanks went back there for Band of Brothers.

Quite right MonsterCat - one of my best mates did extra work on a couple of episodes and they were filmed in that area.

Sometimes I wonder if I've changed so much, my wife is even gonna recognize me whenever it is I get back to her, and how I'll ever be able to tell about days like today. Aw, Ryan. I don't know anything about Ryan, I don't care. The man means nothing to me; he's just a name. But if, you know, if going to Ramelle, and finding him so he can go home, if that earns me the right to get back to my wife, well then, then that's my mission.

Someone, somewhere else on these boards dared to compare a certain recent Tarantino-directed film to this Masterpiece - yeah right.

Inglorius Basterds is a different beast altogether to Saving Private Ryan. Tarantino's film is more cartoonish, with a revenge fantasy shootout of Hitler towards the end (very funny might i add!). SPR is more a serious film. So any comparison is futile!
