Really loved this movie - never been a big fan of Trek movies in the past, having been dragged to see previous ones with both original crew and Next Gen crew, however, this movie was great, and I would highly recommend this, even if you are Trek-phobic. Enjoyable, great action and engaging characters - even though they have been around for decades, the cast are great, making the roles their own, whilst nodding to the past?!?!

Best film this year, worthy of 5 stars. Really entertaining and well paced from start to finish. Loads of action but with pleny of good dialogue too, unlike Terminator salvation which seems to be loads of great action but not much talking,

The only bit I found amusing was when Uhura came on strong to Spock: "oh Spock... your planet, family, and 6 billion people have just been blown up, can I fuck you to make you feel better?"

I just want to that this latest Star Trek movie is brilliant it really does capture everything about the original series so well. Chris Pine is brilliant as James T Kirk who I must say is brilliant so does Zachary Quinto as his first officer who battles with his emotions and the rest of the cast does a brilliant job as well. I loved the action sequences and the references to TOS it was funny when Scotty was in the water tubes. I just want to say that Star Trek is back and hats off to JJ Abrams and the cast and crew who made a brilliant movie for everyone to enjoy so live long and prosper

JJ Abrams is the man behind last years hit Cloverfield and perhaps one of the best shows on TV Lost. With this he has introduced the star trek franchise to a whole new generation of fans. I am not a trekkie in fact i have barely seen any trek all i know is what everyone knows. This film blew me away from the superb opening, great cast, fantastic direction for JJ and a real sense of fun, excitement and a franchise that in reinventing so to speak itself has set out a bright new future for itself. This is miles ahead of terminator, transformers, wolverine and angels and demons. This is how entertaining cinema is made.

Director J.J. Abrams (of “LOST” and “Cloverfield” fame), brings to life a series formerly enjoyed only by a cult following known as “Trekkies.” Abrams brings the corny TV show “Star Trek” to life not with one bang, but many.

Of the 11 films previous to the 2009 movie, none give an origin story for the two main characters: Captain James T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine, and pointy-eared, half-human, half-Vulcan Spock, played by Zachary Quinto.

Kirk is established as a daredevil, who dispises conforming to tradition and has a great disregard for logic. Whilst Kirk is an impulsive character, Spock runs on logic, with a stony expression and an eternal tone of polite interest. The movie gives the audience a chance to truly appreciate the characters, and what defines them as two of the most famous personalities of all time.

The opening sequence of the film really sets the stage for the look, feel, and tone of the movie: bright colors, fantastic special effects, big explosions, lots of lasers, and an energy that the series desperately needs.

The movie’s tattooed, pointy-eared villain, Nero, played with fantastic ferocity by Eric Bana, is out for revenge after his home planet of Romulus is destroyed, and will stop at nothing to destroy every member planet of the interplanetary organization called the Federation. Commanding a massive ship that looks like a giant hair comb from hell, he travels through space and time, destroying planets by making them implode.

Enter James Kirk, son of renowned captain George Kirk, who died fighting Nero, but in the process saved the lives of 800 people, including his son. James is a bit of a playboy. This is not to say that he is not compassionate. He is determined to prove himself, and ascend the ranks of Starfleet at warp speed.

From an early start, he makes as many enemies as he does friends, and among those enemies is Spock. Quickly they must put aside their differences

I loved it and Im anticipating the sequal. The Extra features are really fascinating, I especially admire that they used real locations and sets instead of entirely green screen CGI unlike the Star Wars prequals. Also look out for the reenvisioning of the Klingons that were cut from the film.

J.J Abrams, whilst starting a new and exciting Star Trek franchise for die-hard fans, has also created a film which everyone will love. Abrams has created a sci-fi epic, adorning glitzy and exciting spaceships with a fair dose of humour, his trademark time travel, bad-ass monsters and many subtle trekkie references. The casting and acting proved to be pristine, Zachary Quinto taking a break from being a murderous "hero" to portray the conflicted personality of Spock and doing it dam well.

Watched this on DVD over christmas. Loved it. Good Laughs, Fast action, Good actors and a very accessable film for everyone. My wife unlike myself didn't follow any of the TV shows but equally enjoyed it. Seeing as shes not a sci fi film fan in any shape manner or form i'd say JJ pulled off a major coup. can't wait for the sequel.

I've re-watched this 2 times on Blu-Ray at home (since seeing it in the cinema) and 1 time at work (digital copy on PC - a slow day in the shop!) and absolutely love it

I'd go so far to say my favourite film of 2009, and I'm not a trekkie by any means...

Furiously paced, exceedingly stylish and thoroughly entertaining. However, there is no need to think at all throughout the film and the humour doesn't always hit the mark. Aside from this, it is definitely worth a watch if your solely interested in being amused. Bana is brilliant as the villain.

I thought this was a brilliant re-boot. Right from the fantastic opening which managed instantly to capture the finest elements of the Star Trek movie franchise in a breathtaking first 10 minutes. The emergence of the gigantic ship, the visually stunning attack, the shocking sudden death of the Captain all the way to the truly moving final moments of Kirk Senior manually guiding the ship to a suicidal collision to save his family and crew. Plus the music as well which added to the emotion superbly.

As for the rest of the film, it looked amazing apart from some of the sets which did look a bit 20th century industrial and jarred slightly. But that's a minor quibble, it had loads of top class setpieces and the cast I thought were excellent with no one letting the side down - the standouts being Kirk, Spock, Nero, Bones and Uhuru who was (to be blunt) fucking gorgeous as well as displaying the strength and intelligence you'd expect from the character.

Great to see Captain Pike (another quality performance) around as well; I was expecting him to get horribly maimed from his appearance in the TV series although I forgot that the appearance of Nero had changed the future so that wouldn't be happening.

Anyways gutted I didn't see it on the big screen - 5 stars from me

Also Leonard Nimoy = legend

Looks like I'm in the minority here then! The film was entertaining, yes. Action-packed, yes. Re-vitalising for the franchise, yes.

It was also horribly contrived, bringing the usual suspect characters together in ever more improbable circumstances. You have to be a Deterministic to get this film on any meaninful level. The whole time-travel thing didn't work for me, this film wasn't clever enough to pull it off, and there were just too many points where the suspension of disbelief was broken.

I wish people would stop calling fantasy films "Sci-Fi" because it has space ships and lasers in it.

If you're young and have low expectations, this will hit the spot. If you're after any kind of real science fiction, look elsewhere. The original series might have had laughable special effects etc. but at least it did from time to time deal with some interesting concepts.

Oh and the whole Spock thing was rubbish and obvious. Young Spock wrestles with his half-human emotional side, YAWN. It's already been done for grown-up Spock (and then Data) about a gazillion times and with more subtlety than here. Again if you're too young to have seen the same story vomited up more times than you can remember, you might get something out of it.

Three stars for at least having some life and zing to it.

What's youth got to do with it - this movie has been consistently praised by the press and not all of them are straight out of nappies as far as I know.

I've watched a lot of sci-fi and seen a lot of star trek over the years; if you think this is a five star incarnation on either score and you haven't got inexperience on your side, I'm not sure how I could explain it politely

I did say it was OK in my humble, but just cannot understand some of the gushes for this film.

The fact that lots of reviewers thought it was brill means nothing to me. Empire tends to review any big "boys own" films favourably, I still haven't got over their benign view of the crap Superman Returns. There are few movie reviewers whose opinion I respect, which possibly means I'm in a minority!

I'd give it five stars for the overall impact - I do agree it has it's contrivances but frankly so does many a film and it's not just Empire that has highly rated it. (Totally agree about the Superman Returns review by the way, although that got a lot less across the board support than Star Trek has).

By the way just because you've watched a lot of sci-fi over the years it doesn't mean you're opinions matter more than any others! There's a bucketload of sci-fi fans that love this movie.

And which movie reviewers do you respect - if you respect very few that says a lot more about the way you view film. Possibly you're too old and nitpicky to enjoy movies like these

Flukey that would depend on how you describe sci-fi, and for me this is more lowest common denominator fare. For me there were several parts where I just laughed at the implausibility of it all. You don't have to be high-brow to be consistent and believable do you?

I never said my opinion mattered more, the whole point of film is the interpretation and what it means to you. Neither does my opinion matter less because I'm on the minority on this thread. Is this film really "sci-fi"? About as much as Lost was I would say. My personal view, marginal as it might be, is that you need at least a little bit of science as well as the fiction. Teleporting genius Scottish engineers into pipes of cooling fluid isn't science mate.

I'm interested in how you think I view film because I don't respect many reviewers?? Too old? I'm 34. Might be. Too nitpicky? Well, yes if that means I expect a film to be good and to do more than trot out pretty tired old plotlines with a bit of polish on top.

I can enjoy fantasy films like "Lord of the Rings" on their own merits, it doesn't pretend to deal with time travel and the intergalactic expansion of the human race in the space age. So I think this Star Trek deserves some criticism. And it's just not original; none of the ideas in it are new, even for Star Trek never mind Sci-Fi as a whole, and it's s pretty clear commercial construct to breathe new life into the whole franchise and make more money, re-hashing themes and characters that some people maybe won't have seen before; and other people who have should know better.

Not an awful film, it's quite well executed and entertaining enough, but there you have it.

I think it's better than all of the Next Generation film efforts personally which were pretty dry and it felt closer to the better original crew efforts to me. I can see where you're coming from in terms of focusing on every flaw, but I cut down on doing that years ago because I found if I over analysed things I could find fault with any movie no matter how good. Now I just let things go and try to absorb films as a whole without analysing things too deeply. It makes watching films more enjoyable for me - I also completely avoid reviews until after watching movies as well.

I agree it's better/as good as TNG films. It's probably as good as most others in the franchise, but there have been some Star Trek stinkers over the years. I think I only like Wrath of Khan so much due to nostalgia, and the older ones had a certain charm to them.

You CAN find fault with any movie, even "five-star" movies, but personally if something in a film breaks my suspension of disbelief I can't gloss it. I think, personally, Avatar is a five star film because despite its significant faults it still manages to really draw you into the world and care about the characters, a bit.

Different boats need different floats, As for reviews - I'll check Empire as a screening - so I won't tend to watch films rated less than 3 stars as they're very likely hopeless. I did usually agree with Jonathan Ross but he's offski. I don't disagree with everyone

The new Star Trek is a blazing return to the space opera we all loved until The Phantom Menace came along. Everything you would expect from the genre is right here, thanks largly to the capable cast and director JJ Abrams. The writing does have its flaws, but you'll be having so much fun that you won't even notice. Still, Kurtzman and Orci manage to keep the feel of the series while adding their own traits which blend beautifully with the material. Abrams pretty much does the same thing, and the result is an immensely enjoyable space opera with enough substance to make it very respectable.
The ensemble cast is simply impeccable, Everyone - and I mean EVERYONE - turns in a pitch perfect performance.

This film is one of the best sci fi films Ive ever seen, I am a bit of a fan of trek, not a trekkie but loved the next generation and some of the films, wrath of khan, first contact, this film is excellent in every department, the casting for every character is spot on, Dr McCoy is genius, as is Spock, I even enjoyed Scotty, brilliant re-boot to the Star Trek series. Also the effects are superb, bring on trek 2
